Great Game

Battlefield 1942 is a fun game... The physics of the vehicles aren't terribly detailed and you need a pretty high-end computer to run it smoothly, and broadband internet to play multiplayer but even single-player you can have a lot of fun. Many aspects of the game are somewhat like an arcade style shooter/simulation... There are a lot of controls, but once you get used to them it's pretty simple. I have read that people thought that there weren't enough maps with the original game without any expansions, but I do not have any of the expansions and don't really plan on buying any of them but I am perfectly happy with what I have now. If you look around on the internet (www.planetbattlefield.com is a great site with a lot of mods) you can find mods which add vehicles, weapons, and lots of other stuff. You can download new maps if you are really bored with the ones provided. My personal favorite mod (and the only one I have) is called Desert Combat. It takes place in modern days and adds new weapons for the Americans (or Coallition) like the M16, M249, M203 grenade launcher, and many more. New vehicles include helicopters (Blackhawk and Apache for the Allies/Coalition), Harrier, A-10, M1 Abrahms, and more. The maps are the same (but there are some extra like on El Alamein there is a day 2, 3, and maybe more than that... I forget.)
If you are still there you are my friend and are really cool and should win lots of money...

...Anyway... Overall, I think Battlefield is a great game, tremendously fun, and (although a little bit pricey for a game that came out so long ago), a great value. You can spend many hours just playing single player... Don't even get me started about playing at internet cafe... Place... Things...

...Go! Wash your ankles!

I have had BF: 1942 for 3 months now. Many games out there now are great but they get old and boring after the newness wears off. I can only say, that isn't the case here. Now that map editors are out, there is limitless variety to how the game can look and feel. I play online for a while and when I finally get frustrated from being on the losing team way too many times, I switch to single player on easy and make myself feel competent. I am using different mods as well and this is where is value is. You can completely change the game to modern war (Desert Combat Mod) or Jungle Combat (Day of Destruction). Best part is: the mods are free! All in all, its a hoot and a good value for your gaming dolar.
Pros: Lots of vehicles
Multiplayer Teamwork
Available mods
Different ways to win (infantry, tanks, artillery- your strategy)
Cons: Multiplayer interface could use some streamlining
Waiting for a long time to spawn

Please understand what you are buying!

Battlefield 1942 is an excellent online game, however there are faults:
-Horrible Single Player
-You need DSL or cable to play online
-You need a fast computer to play fluidly
-Need a large monitor to use the sniping mode perfectly
-This game will literally take away 4-6 hours of your day.
-If you have a wife, she will be mad for the lack of attention

The main point: If you have the time, money, and power you will be addicted to this game. I am 19, my brother is 28, and we both fight to play this game. Anyone who plays the game will be blown away. I am not a crazy kid who is blindly in love with BF 1942; get the demo, and you will see why this game is the #1 online game out in the market. IF you HAVE THE RESOURCES, then buy this game.

Oh My Goodness

Plus you get to do it all under complete freedom just about! And the maps are HUGE! This game is just like a real war. Pure awesome! This is the best online game Ive ever played. Just be sure you have a good rig that will hold up this monster game :)

This game is worth it!

Steven D Reilly, you've got a screw loose! This game provides all the action you could ever want in a war game. Not only does it work almost flawlessly on its own, the connections for multiplayer work just fine as well. There's no more than two minutes of load time, and that's only when I'm playing a large map with secret weapons and multiple players hooked up through a network! I play this game almost every day, and I've never had a problem! From high-flying action to crawling prone against the face of a hill, trying to sneak up on the enemy, this game is the ultimate in first-person war games! A MUST BUY for all you gamers out there!!!!!

Battlefield 1842 is a WW2 Arcade game in which players can battle in a very basic singleplayer campain or players can battle on the net in various game types such as Capture The Flag, Coop, Conquest, and Team Deathmatch with upto 64 players.

general: The graphics are pretty nice but the ground is lacking. no tall grass famr fields or anything like that...its simply just green or borwn ground with a few bushes and trees. the sound isnt outstanding but it gets the job done. The game is not historically correct for instance the americans use a bolt action rifle instead of the garand.. theres no m1 carbine, etc.

If you are looking for a single player expierence turn away now. Battlefield 1942's single player is not the games strong point at all - No story/plot line, no characters, no cut scenes, no scripted events, etc. The AI in singleplayer are simply bots - even though you have this nice command list in singleplayer where you shout out commands and such, the AI do not listen or even react(the command list is ment for multiplayer). The AI simply runs to a destination - they dont talk, do cool moves, etc... they dont even throw hand grenades even though they have them. The AI do enter vehicle though..wow. i know.

Lets talk multiplayer. Ive heard its the games strongpoint.. but.. to tell you the truth... ive played it once for the 5 or 6 months ive had the game.. why? ive been playing modifications for the game (modifications are a conversion of the original game which can totaly change it - new vehicles, guns, or new setting and time) such as Desert Combat(http://www.desertcombat.com/) and Forghotten Hope(sitedown).
Modifications are defently a plus though for this game since they are pretty much free new games.

Pros:
-upto 64 players multiplayer in fast qqb ww2 action
-Lots of vehicles to choose from
-Nice looking graphics
-Well designed maps

Cons:
-MOST Server technology cant quite yet support a full 64 player server without lag

-Singleplayer is horrible and boring - no plot-bot ai - etc
-Not historically correct
-WWII first person shooter and Arcade do not go together to well

Features:
-Play multiplayer with upto 64 players
-Play as America, Germany, Russia, Britain, Japan.
-Choose between Scout, assualt, medic, anti-tank, or engineer.
-Choose from 19 authentic WWII handheld weapons, including two stationary machine guns, to take into battle.
-16 maps to play on -
-WWII theaters of war: North Africa, South Asia Pacific, Western Europe and Eastern Europe.
-Community made moddifications supported

----------------------------------------

Ea has released Numerous patches and maps for this game adding more features!

Battlefield 1942: Makes you say, "Quake what?"

When rating this game, I didn't want to give it a Perfect 5, but then it is better than a mere 4, so I would like to customize the rating process and give it a solid 4.5. Here is my justification of such a complimentary score:

I have played this game on a somewhat limited basis and all I can say is that I have been highly impressed!
I "grew up" playing games like Doom, Quake, and most recently, Unreal. These are very entertaining games; however, they lack one very important trait: realism. Though it is entertaining to force-feed your enemy a healthy serving of shrapnel from a flak cannon on some alien world with orange skies, it isn't realistic.

This is where BF 1942 distinguishes itself from every other FPS I've ever played: realism. From dying after being hit by one bullet (or two max), to being able to carry only a handful of equipment, the realism of this game stands out. I believe the realism adds to, rather than detracts from, this game.

Another distinguishing characteristic of BF 1942 is the goal of conquering territory (similar to the "Axis and Allies" board game). I like the idea of having to do more than kill the most people in a given time period (a la "Quake").

The third impressive thing, which most everyone alludes to when writing a review of BF 1942, is the use of vehicles. This is something that Quake (et al) can't even touch. The fact that you can jump in a tank, plane, gun turret and blast away adds an extra degree of entertainment. The game's realism also plays into this: you can roll/damage your vehicle (invulnerability gets old after a few minutes). I also like the fact that you can have multiple players in the same vehicle (i.e. a driver and a gunner).

And finally, for those multiplayer fans, the online version is rather challenging and impressive.

So, in closing I would encourage any FPS enthusiasts to go out and get this game right away! If it made me go out and get a faster computer, it's gotta be good!

Cheers.

One of the Greats in Mulitplayer Gaming

Caveat Emptor, I am biased--I am a huge Battlefield fan. I own both expansion packs and the spinoff "Battlefield: Vietnam." Rather than trust my opinion on how awesome this game is, let me give some pointers on who should and who should not get this game.

If you do not have a broadband connection, the multiplayer will more than likely not be enjoyable. Because the mulitplayer is the only reason to buy this game, those without a solid internet connection should not buy this game. The single player, in my opinion, is crap.

For those who have a broadband connection and enjoy multiplayer gaming look no further! You don't even need to be great at FPS's to love this game. There are planes. There are tanks. There are jeeps (you get to run people over)! There are scouts (snipers with binoculars who scout for artillery). Pretty much any gamer can find something they like to do in Battlefield 1942!

If you enjoy flight sims, then get this game and test your skills against foe in the air AND vermin on the ground! If you love FPS's, then get this game and wreak havoc with your BAR or STG assault rifle! If you don't like FPS's or flying, then STILL consider getting this game, so long as you enjoy multiplayer action.

To those purchasing the game, I would recommend at least 512 RAM. This does two things--improves in-game performance and GREATLY reduces load times. This game plays aweswome on two different video cards that I have. On one system I have a Geforce 4 MX440. It plays perfect! On my main box I have a Radeon 9800. So, one can be confident that it plays well on a range of video cards.

Overall: Highly recommended for those with broadband internet and a hankering for some multiplayer carnage.

Battlefield is the best online FPS since Counter-Strike. No doubt about that in my mind. The fact that you can controll any vehicle, man any weapon, and do whatever the hell you want is awesom. The maps are varried and each are fun to play. The weapons ok. Yes only ok. In the retail version, the Russians have the same weapons as the Americans. Since when did the Russians have a BAR? Another thing, there is no MI Garand in the retail version! What the hell is up with that??? The MI was the most used gun in United States Military History! (Later Patches give the M1 on the Pacific maps) These are all minor gripes, so here are the big ones...

Now while it is in fact a steller game it has its problems. For one, the system specs are WAY to high for how the game looks. It looks ok, but with games like UT2003 that came out at the same time, it looks old. There are some minor balancing issues with the weapons(which are changed in lator patches) But other then that, its awesom.

Concept- Make an epic online fragathon that is fun and easy to play.

Presintation- 9.0- The Menus are a bit odd and hard to navagate, but other then that, good.

Graphics- 8.4- The game looks believeable, but the system specs are way too high for how it looks.

Sound- 9.2- The sound is great. Could have used more abient sounds though

Playability- 9.7- All the vehicles are easy to use, except the airplanes. (You have to practice with those) Its not realistic, verry arcade like, but EXTREAMLY fun.

Entertainment- 9.4- Extreamly fun and impossible to put down. The best online multiplayer game right now.

Replay Value- 10- The single player is week, but that doesnt matter. Its all about multiplayer baby. Whith this good of multiplayer, who needs single player???
