If you like the Tom Clancy game franchise...

...then this is probably not for you. I was expecting something that was a reasonable simultation of a combat environment a la "Ghost Recon", "Spliter Cell, "Rainbox Six", or even "Swat 4". This game is not that.

To me it feels more like "Quake 3 Arena" based on models of real weapons and superb graphics than anything else. This "simulation" is nothing more than a series of assault missions where the goal is to capture and hold certain points against opponents that are respawning seconds after you manage a kill. Strangely, even vehicles (hummers, tanks, choppers, etc.) respawn. Since everything respawns, nothing nudges players toward cooperative action or smart tactical decisions. Just grab a rifle and charge that machine gun...

Another peeve is that there isn't a solo campaign. Call me old fashioned, but I expect the cost of the software to reflect some effort at developing an AI and creating a compelling reason to play. Instead, solo play is the same as online play with computer players filling up the teams. After a dozen hours of play (both online and solo), I was *very* bored.

This is by far the worst match recommended by Amazon.

Better, EA Games has hit the ball!

Even since 2002 Battlefield had it's start with Battlefield 1942. It had great online play as well as a historical background (They added grey clouds on the Ohama Beach map). After this release 2003 had more suprises. The expansion packs Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WWII were a big hit in gaming! And Secret Weapons introduced new real life weapons, not alieninated weapons. A year later Battlefield Vietnam came and had excellent gaming! As well as 70's music to play during combat. And that wasn't in any of the games at all (same with BF2). Finally after A year and a half, this game was released! Battlefield 2 has a 21st century combat style with new weapons and new foes. I think part of the battles is about the War in Iraq. There has been many games about the War in Iraq, but it isn't as historical. It's fiction rather than facts. But this game stands tall while games like Halo, Doom 3, etc, crouch down.

The gameplay and the online play is excellent! You can choose the following classes: Scout, Assault, Medic, Special Forces, and engeener. And you can choose different weapons! But this game also has vehicles, step into a tank, helicopter, jet, etc. And use sidearms such as anti-tank, snipers, machine guns, and shotguns. And each side gets grenades, pistol, and a knife. By the way, the AI in this game is better, this game is very much like a cross between RTS, Republic Commando, and Battlefield! Squad leaders are neat! They can give commands and give some tatical actions to victory!

Now since my computer is a very powerful one, I didn't have to change the graphic card (Hehehehe) [...]

I'll make this short...

Run around a so called 'battlefield' shooting at whatever moves, doing whatever you want, jumping like Bugs Bunny when you are being fired at.

Sit down with a sniper rifle and snipe down just respwaned player, as the 'respawn' point is one per team (Never seen soldiers 'respawn' in modern warfare).

Get in a vehicle and run over people. Wow.

And people dare to put the expressions 'Strategy' and 'Best piece of software ever created' in their list of BF2'positive things.

And I forgot to mention the wait of inserting the CD, have the program verify if it's original, watch the 10 min un-cancellable EA intro video, create an account, register it, have EA verify it, access the menu (Takes long enough to allow you a visit to the bathroom), access Gamespy (You can't access the sever list on your own apparently) suffer trough it's ads of 'register, pay money for some useless crap' access the server list (Which has no filters of ANY kind...), find a suitable game (Only about 4% or 6% have more than 8 players and less than 1700 ping, and there are more than three thousand servers), wait for the map to load, and finally wait for your character to respawn. 45 minutes, I checked it.

Nice try, EA, nice try. I say to you, better luck next time, as I do with every 'game' you release...

I previously criticized this game, but now that I had a chance to play Battlefield 2 for quite sometime, I agree that this is a fantastic game with enduring qualities. I still say their multiplayer interface is mediocre at best, but once you're hooked, it's a small price to pay. The best part of this game is that you can track your progress online to see how you match up against the world. There's great goals to obtain, including unlocking new weapons, receiving medals, and getting promoted. I earlier criticized the large map, but they have improve it since BF1942 in that you can re-spawn where your squad leader is so as long as he's not waiting to be spawned himself. This keeps you where the action is. The initial complexity of the game actually give great depth in ensuring not just hours of playing time, but months on end. Highly recommended!

Battlefield 2 is quite possibly the best PC shooter of all time. I'm an avid gamer and own about every game in existence, and this is probably the best shooter I have EVER played. Singleplayer is good for practice, and Multiplayer is more fun than you can imagine. I HIGHLY recommend this for any serious gamer.

This game is great

I have read a lot of the reviews on here and cannot believe what I am reading. You do not have to have gamespy and 90% of the people that buy this game do not have problems with it. I will admit you do need a good computer with a good graphics card to play. I play on my laptop and I have a ATI radeon, which is not the best card you can get, and I have have a blast playing. Certain sites that I try to play on lag but that is going to happen with just about any system. There are patches that have to be downloaded but this is a small price to pay for having a blast. If you have dial up I would not even attempt to play this on the internet. I do not usually write reviews but the stuff I was reading was really irritating me, if you have an old computer then do not buy the game. One last thing is that all of you stats are tracked online, you will recieve ribbons and different ranks. The stat tracker feature is what seals the deal for me it is great being able to see how accurate you are, and to be able to see many other stats. Overall this is a great game.

Fun when it works, but very buggy.

I waited to buy this game until recently. Now that I have bought it I wish I would not have. Even after the latest patches this game is still not stable. It shouldn't have been released in this condition.
Battlefield 2 has all the ingredients for a great FPS. It is a lot of fun to play when it works. Teamwork, different roles as a player, and the ranking system are all great ideas. Unfortunately they are thrown together in an unstable package.
Maybe EA will finally get things straightened out in the upcoming 1.3 patch. It will only be the 7th patch released for this game. Who could expect it to work yet?
I would suggest buying something else. Why pay the price for what is essentially a Beta game?

A change of pace.

After the fast-paced intensity of Call of Duty 2, this game took a little getting used to. he key thng is that this game is geared toward multiplayer mode, and there is no campaign. And because it allows the operation of any vehicle on a map, this means that the maps are generally quite large, and thus getting around on foot can take quite a long time without help. Still, despite the loose feeling and the lack of CoD-like intensity, this game is very fun, I love it. I recommend it for any lover of FPS games.
One note, it has VERY high system reqs. Make sure you have a very good computer for playing this on.

Makes counterstrike and most other online fps games seem pointless and boring

There is so much fun to be had in this game. Not to mention all the different strategies you can use. You can use vehicles, many different types of weapons as different soldier classes. Land mines, grenades, guided missles, sniper rifles, claymores, artillery, etc.. it just has no end. All of the game is balanced pretty well and once you get the hang of it, you will figure out the ups and downs of each type and vehicle. It is fun to play for hours and the maps are HUGE. When you get 64 people on a large map, playing as squads and accomplishing goals, it doesnt get any better. You can have in game communications with your battlefield commander who can give you reinforcements, supplies, artillery, enemy movements and also give you overhead map views of the battlefield to get your game plan down.

this game is fantastic, if you like strategy or FPS, this is a must have...

make sure your computer is running a lot of memory tho, it is a system hog.

My core 2 duo at 2.0ghz and 4 gigs of 667 ram and a 8800 gts 512mb nvidia card will allow almost full details with a great framerate, but if you have any less then a gig of ram, just forget it.

make sure your computer fits the recommended requirements and start battle!

Once it gets going it,s fun...

This game is proof that Electronic Arts can MAKE a good game, but it's also proof that they can't make it run. I have both BF2 and the expansion, and with both I've had nothing but trouble trying to log in and play the game. Esspecially if I try to use it with GameSpy. It will actually try to open the game through GameSpy AND try to just open the game normally. It gets very annoying and sucks the memory right out of my computer. Though, maybe that experience is different with different RAM. I have 1Gb of high-performance DDR400 and a GeForce 6800 (the fastest AGP8x model they make).

Now then, that said, this game is terrific once you can get connected to a local server (if you live in the U.S. you connect to a U.S. server instead of a European server). The graphics are spectacular, much better than I expected. I did expect a boost in graphics with the expansion, but I won't complian about it because they're still great.

The game also throws in a few spins on multi-player shooting. The most noticable of these is the commander mode. You can control your troops AND launch an artillery shell/mortar attack on an outpost being over-run. You also get teams. You know, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie... They also give you a ranking system that works sort of like an XP grind in MMOs. The more you play and the better you do, the higher your rank goes... and it stays there. You also get awards, which is nothing new, but this time you get to keep them.

The only two downsides of this game are the way you can't use GameSpy to connect, which I like to do. It allows me to find servers in America only. Two, the game was produced by Electronic Arts which is the prostitute of the game developement world. EA's customer service is worthless, not too mention their ruthless wh*ring of advertisements in games, but anywho...

I'll recommend this game for those of you looking for a more realistic type shooting game. It's a bit slower than Counter-Strike, but it requires more teamwork and has more objectives thrown in... not to mention you can have servers with 60 some-odd people on it. The larger maps and massive amount of people make up for the slower pace! The jets and vehicles do as well. You'll enjoy this game. I'm not too sure if I'll recommend the expansion to you just yet, but I do recommend Battlefield 2.
