Heroic Fun!

COH is alot of fun. I have 2 lvl50 toons. A Fire Controller and a Enegry Defender. Of the 2 I like the Fire Contoller to best, the controller can hold villians with "Choke" or debuff them with "Smoke". The Controller can then use "imps" to attack the held villians. In team setting the controller can give each team member "ClearMind" which reduces enemy ability to hold team members, can also give endurance and health recovery to all teammates, and 1 teammate can have a fortitude (ench def&attack powers of reciever). You can build a secret base and outfit the base with many rooms and gadets. With Issue7 coming soon and expanded upgrade is coming to make the game more challenging. Getting City Of Villians is almost a must when playing COH to get the most out of this game.

Well, looked this game up here so I could send a friend a link so they could read the reviews. reading the reviews I find that I just cannot agree with many of the recent ones.

I beta tested on this game, and played it for a while. When most of my friends went to WoW to play I went to, and let my account go inactive. I came back about a month ago and reactivated my account.

yes, there were some changes while I was gone. but you know, I just don't see it as that big a deal. my old character plays exactly the same 2 years later as he did in the beginning. he deals out a major butt whooping to anything put inhis path, despite the "nurf" that everyone seems so upset over. in fact, I haven't really noticed that big a change and I hadnothing but damage enhancements in all his attacks. now with 3 damage enhancements and endurance reductions, not only does he hit pretty much as hard, he can do it ALOT longer.

don't be fooled by a bunch of people who are mad because things are exactly the way they want them. things are anywhere near as bad as they make them seem. I've played for a long time and truthfully, it's not a bad game at all. I wish they would use some of the Quality of Life ideas that world of warcraft has, such as mailboxes and such, but, I can live without those things too. for shear fun, this game is hard to beat. nothing like being able to take aim and watch your enemy not only fall with one shot, but fly 10's of feet through the air.

my name is Boom-stick, I'm an AR/DEV blaster and this is my game.

one of the best out there

I love the game. I can't wait until City of Villains comes out. There are Very cool powers and characteristics you can get. It is very cool how you can team up and do missions with other people online. All I'm saying is that I love this game. One of the best games of 2004. If you love RPG's like Ever Quest. This is definitely a game for you.

Could have been better

I had been waiting for this game for a long time. This was an awesome game, for the first week. After that it starts to get really repetitive and pretty boring. Right now I am stuck with a 6 month subscription because they don't give refunds and's what's worse is I can't go trade this game in because once the CD Key is used it can't be used again. So I make a new super hero, have fun with them for about an hour, then the boredom sets in again. I would not buy this game unless you are super hardcore comic fan. Even then it might be iffy!

A Great Game for the not so hardcore crowd.

Don't enter this game thinking that it is Everquest with superheroes, it's not. This game appeals much more to me rather than those typical games in the genre due to the fact that I can play it before going out to do something else, while those other games tend to take a couple of hours to accomplish something of any meaning.

This game is not based on power leveling or grabbing the most powerful stuff you can. It is more about enjoying the novelty of being able to fly like Superman, or jump across towns in a single bound like the Hulk.

All and all I would only recommend it to people who don't want to play a number problem disguised as a game by graphics, but rather enjoy themselves for a few moments on their lunch break.

Beware: There's a MONTHLY FEE

I bought this game with high hopes that it would be fun and worth my time. Now, I can't belive how incredibly wrong I was. Be very carful when considering buying this game. If you don't read *everything* on the box, you'll miss the EXTREMELY SMALL print that says "additional online fees required." That is a big rip off, and all these people trying to argue against that FACT must have millions of dollars in their bank accounts to afford what they all call a "small" monthly fee.

Who markets software that, once you pay for it, you have to KEEP paying for it over and over again, every month, for as long as you decide you want to play it. Note to the maker of this game: People have jobs, most of them. They don't have time to sit at home all day and play games on their computers. Most of them don't have money to put aside every month for a freaking computer game. This is crap. This game was NOT made with the average working woman or man in mind.

[...]

I can't believe so many people brag about this like it's the coolest thing in computer gaming. I'm sure it would be cool if you're very rich, without a job, and have no other life whatsoever outside of City of Heroes.

THIS IS TRUE ONLINE GAMING

First of all those who complain that they can't play this is cause it needs an online connection it says on the box "REQUIRES an INTERNET CONNECTION" and to those who say the game disconnects its simple upgrade the computer and also to those who say it is mad expensive in the long run well maybe it is but nothing in this world comes cheap eh ,am i right? Well anyways this game is no doubt the best game i bought in my 17 yrs of living. From the character creation screen to the many zones in the game this the game is always got u something to do... and yea if ur the kind of person who expects a silver platter of differnt gameplay after u get to lvl 40 get another game cause this game is basically PROTECT PARAGON CITY thats all u do just kill mobs and such but u have thousands of others to play with cause its an MMORPG but having this game for bout 5 weeks i never grow tired and the people on the game are so nice also the support is amazing with them responding to ur problems in only a few hours..... but bottom line is this game rocks and i yet to see a game that revolutionizes gameplay like COH does and the games is coming out with updates with more mobs ,zones, and expans the lvl capacity to 50

Good overall.

I have enjoyed playing this game. I only give it three stars due to the constant changing of the superhero's powers. As your superhero increases in level, you will choose powers and enhance those powers to your liking. As soon as you design your superhero the way you like, you log on one day and the game has a new version with changes to some of your powers. I think it's also safe to say that the changes that I have seen so far have weakened most powers. This may not seem like an issue to some of you but it is very frustrating to spend 4-5 hours a week for a few months playing this game just to have your favorite powers drastically changed. I actually cancelled my account over the last version. My two superheroes powers were so drastically changed that it was not fun to play them anymore. Beware!! If you like stability, do not buy this game!!!

I was one of the many people who waited for this game to be released since hearing of it 3 years ago. I posted in the COH forums before beta and even beta tested the game from the beginning till its release in stores. I continue to be a subscriber of this MMORPG. Here is the lowdown for COH: This game is probably by far one of the best MMORPG's out to date. Character creation is absolutely amazing - a gamer has so many choices to choose from and even if one was to sketch out their character design on paper first and to mimic that character design in the COH character creator screen that person will not be disappointed as it copies it to a "T." The hero one makes starts out with 2 powers at level 1 and he or she picks another power at level 2. It is quite easy to level your character to level 10 and above... things slow down however as the character hits the early level 20's as the xp needed to level is greatly increased. There currently is no xp decay but instead when a hero falls in battle a debt system is carried over where the hero gets half the xp he or she normally would gain from defeating thugs. Missions ingame are another thing that could either be seen as enjoyable or a complete nightmare. As of now missions are divided up into 2 categories: you have the search and arrest X amount of thugs on streets and you have the so common indoor missions (which vary from caves, warehouses, tech labs, etc). The game claims that the most important thing that distinguishes this MMORPG from another is the story arc that evolves around your hero. Here is a warning tho to all gamers that are planning on purchasing this game: The story arcs that normally would give you soveniors (which is the trophy one gains after completing a story arc that consists of a dozen or so missions intertwined together), may be bugged so u can never finish the story arc, the story arc may become outleveled or the contact that should give you a story arc becomes outleveled which normally means that a hero that is higher level then the story arc would not net that story arc to completion. An example is if a hero that is level 20 would not be able to do the level 14 Bonefire Skulls/Hellions story arc adventure because he or she has surpassed the lower level that the mission should have been given. I found this outleveling of story arcs out when I played the first month of COH. This is one of the most complained about issues on the forums by many players. Conclusion is that the developers dont plan to lift the outleveling of story arc content anytime soon.. so one must decide on two things:
1) You can play the game socially and group with people gaining experience points at a fast rate only to outlevel the main story arcs and never be allowed to do them in the future. Of course if you were to get 2 bugged story arcs you will never get to do future story arcs even ones of your level.
2) You can play the game anti-socially and never group with people thus just doing mission after mission assigned by your contacts until you finish all the story arcs in the game with your character. Simply if you care for the game content story arcs then play the game as if it was a single player game and not a MMORPG.

As for updates and patches... patches so far go through live period on the servers once every month. If one were to expect changes, dont expect it anytime soon. The devs do take some of our ideas into consideration but most of it is only cosmetic ideas such as "wanting capes" or "4 different costumes for one hero in the game." When it comes down to fixing bugs, potential things that may gimp your character, or story arc/game content fixes, the gamer will be out of luck because such matters are of no concern to the Cryptic studios creative team. Every MMORPG game has its pros and cons... it is up to the gamer to decide if any of these are worth his or her time.

Very fun, but incredibly glitchy

I got this game around November/December last year, and although I enjoyed the game, I wished someone had warned me about a few things before I bought it, so I decided to write a review to do just that. Note that this is just MY experience, yours might be entirely different.

Let's start with the good. The character creation is simply wonderful. It's one of the (in my opinion) most fun aspects of gameplay. I love creating a character, shaping their origin and powers, etc. Oodles and oodles of fun, a veritable barrel full of snazzy monkeys. The game itself is a lot of fun as well, letting you live out childhood fantasies of flying about and being adored by the defenseless populace as you take down hordes of nefarious villians. The evil you face is varied and creative, and the missions are usually pretty interesting (although I get the urge to throttle someone the second I hear the words "bank mission"). The graphics are fantastic as well - I once thought about playing in "safe mode" with reduced graphics, but couldn't bear it before even seeing beyond what my character'd look like.

Now the bad.

After getting over the surprise that you pay for the game upfront and THEN pay regular payments afterwards (#&%@^*!!!), I noticed off the bat that after waiting for it to install, you have to wait for all the patches to install. Being an impatient person who was excited about getting to play the game, that was a kick in the head. After finally getting through that, I realize just how slowly EVERYTHING in the game loads. Normally I'd consider my computer on the fast side (not to mention new and with dsl), but you could grow gray hairs waiting for it to finish loading - if it doesn't disconnect halfway through.

Which is my main concern with City of Heroes. Losing connection to mapserver. I mentioned above that I am an impatient sort. I am also a violent person. So you can imagine how the words "Lost connection to mapserver" have me narrowly restraining myself from clawing through my monitor. Especially if I'm in the middle of a fight. Just recently it froze just as I had three Circle of Thorn members advancing upon me, and by the time I had gotten out of the game with a Ctrl/alt/del that completely screwed up my graphics and slowed down the computer, rebooted, clicked through everything that pops up when I log in, opened up City of Heroes, and waited for it to load, I came back to see my character crumpled on the grass and it telling me to go to the hospital (where I could earn some lovely experience debt). Oh joy. In fact, the last time I tried to get back on after that happening, it was frozen from the very beginning. This very problem is one reason why I almost always turn down requests to join a team, because it was really annoying and made me feel really guilty slowing the team down as they waited for me to be reconnected and find them again, even though they were all very considerate about it. (Although a note that the other reason I turn them down is I'm not a particularly social person and if an invite pops up while I'm being swarmed by gun-wielding gang members or if I'm asked repeatedly, again and again, it makes me increasingly anti-social. So a note: politeness is the best policy, my friends.)

But my final word is that if it isn't still frozen the next time I try to access the program, I'm sure I'll be playing it for quite a while. Because despite my many grievances towards it, it really is a great game that I really enjoy. So if you're willing to sacrifice a lot of time loading and rebooting and have patience with your games freezing all the time, but like a great game with awesome features and fun gameplay, City of Heroes is right up your alley.
