Time to give up

I saw this game over the weekend and had to get it. I had heard of it, but that is about it. I couldn't wait to play. I installed the game Monday evening, created a character, and was off and running. Well...kinda.

It took a while to get used to the controls. They are backwards from just about every other game I've played. Moving around just isn't easy. Anyway, I figured, "It's a new game. Give it some time and you'll get used to it." Even as I played more I kept getting 'Target out of range' messages. I would be standing right beside the guy!!! (...).

I get home from work Tuesday and jump right to playing. I'm running around Paragon offing bad guys and it wasn't so bad. I got a little perturbed by the monotony of it. How about a little npc flavor? It's the same guys over and over and over. Still, I knew the game had more to offer, so I was hanging in there.

Wednesday I got home from work and got to playing. This is when it started to come apart for me. The villians were ALL the same except for their level. Hell, even the layouts inside the buildings were EXACTLY the same. I kept asking myself, "Haven't I finished this mission already?" Still, I hung in there because I hadn't played a team game. Surely a team game would be much more rewarding.

Well, I joined a team and we went off into the sewers (finally some new villians!!). BORING - find a group of bad guys, run up, off them, and find next group of bad guys. Why are they always in groups?? Team fights are so bunched up you can hardly tell who is who. We were in the sewers for about 20 minutes and I get a message telling me I've lost my connection to the map server. That was it - kicked from the server.

I'm so frustrated with this game because it has SOOOO much potential. This could be the best game in years...could be, but it's not. The character creation is AWESOME and so is the concept. It's the gameplay that sux. Find group, kill group, find next group, kill next...you get the picture.

When City of Villians comes out I WILL be back, but until then I won't be playing this at all.

Survey says? BZZZZT. Wrong.

Uh, you have 3 types of things to kill:

Helicopter-ee badguys
Human Purse Snatcher badguys
Undead badguys

How many billions of times can you see the same _exact_ 3 badguys, or 6 badguys (2 identical sets of 3, one boss and 2 lackeys) in a tug-of-war over some lady's purse, or hurling insults at a cowering Cop, or pedestrian?

You have exactly 3 types of mobs to kill ad-nauseum.

Also, you are a superhero but guess what? You're illumination challenged, and you have no flashlight. I mean, I can leap tall buildings in a single bound, hurl lightning at badguys, but I can't buy a flashlight to see my way around? Wtf?

How many times can you see some teenybopper running around with a name like Phussy Liquor with a fro and a costume that looks like he got dressed in the dark? While intoxicated?

The power sets are a lot more limited than you may have been led to believe. You get *alot* of folks with the same powersets, in fact one group I was in of 9 people, 6 had the EXACT same powers of MachineGun / Devices (oh, but they looked different).

...and I had a discussion in game with a fellow gamer of what we counted to be 25 glaring oil slicks on this games' road to glory riding the "finally a superhero MMORPG" road to riches...

Anyway, there has been a ton of positive media presented on behalf of this game. Yes it looks great, yes the controls are smooth etc. It might make a great storyline driven single person RPG, but at this admittedly early stage of development, it is more "Tick" than "Hulk".

Outstanding

This is a pretty fun mmorpg...i did not get very far into it due to the fact i played it on my friends computer but the fighting, gameplay, sound/music were all great. If you are looking for an mmo that isn't completly about collecting items and armour this is the one for you.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME......

Unless you are prepared to spend $150 for only one year of play on this ONLINE ONLY game do not purchase it. Also the installation time is balls long and to get the updates for the game (which is required for play) takes over four hours to download and continued to stall on me so I can not even use my one free month. So thanks for the info, Amazon, now I am out of thirty dollars and I feel like my time is completely wasted. Unless you are ready for a world of trouble DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!

Great Game!!!

My friends and I recently purchased this game. Prior to CoH, we were all alpha and beta testers for World of Warcraft. Not wanting to get burned out on WoW before release, we decided to take a break and give this game a try and we haven't returned to WoW since.

This game is alot of fun. Its very simple. There is no loot system, eliminating trade chat and kill stealing issues. However, there are enhancements, which are used to increase your heroes abilities. Character creation is fun and allows people to custom create unique characters. As far as looks go, I have not yet seen two heroes that look alike.

Overall, I am very impressed. If your looking for a good online PvE game while waiting for WoW of EQ2 or any of the other upcoming MMORPG's, you might want to check this out. While the game is not yet perfect, its definately off to a good start.

Please read this very carefully..

I have been one of those CoH players who've followed the game fromt he very beginning. I played from CoH beta and played until October of 2005, a full 17 months, and achieved end game at least 3 times - meaning I made 3 lv 50 Heroes, as well as multiple lower level heroes. As you can infer from the scale of effort and time I invested, I love this game. I love the concept, I love the look, and I love its spandex-cape-superheroic feel.

So why the 1 star? I have little problem with the game's concept, and as it stands in October of 2005, its still very enjoyable. However, the devs are about to implement a new system that up-ends the entire powerset syetm that had been in place for the past 17 months. As to whether this was asked, or if it is an idea the players agree with, just check out the furor on [...]. In short, the game is great. Many reviews posted on amazon prior to this date probably all agree on this opinion. The devs, however, have slowly but steadily been making the game less enjoyable and our characters less and less powerful from the beginning of this year. Again, I urge you to check out the coh forum and glimpse on what the players think of the game as it stands.

I don't think you should buy CoH/ CoV. The game started out great, but now it is going down hill. It's still a good game, with a good community... but a community of jaded, angry players with many empaty SuperGroups. Any mmorpg is an investment of time and money - research carefully.

BUYER BEWARE!!!

Do not even begin to think about wasting your time or money. If you want to really know what the game is like, why don't you check out the forum at www.cityofheroes.com ? Specifically the technical forum. Inside you will find hundreds of dissatisfied gamers who have been ripped off.

Sure, the game looks like it'll be a lot of fun. Even when you start it up, everything is fine. Create your character, which is great, lots of options available, now okay are you ready to play? Well too bad. Because the majority of gamers who have spent their hard earned money on this game can't even play it, because of the constant disconnections to the mapserver. At best, you'll get past the tutorial and never step foot in the actual 'game', if there is one.

What you need to keep in mind when you read the other reviews on this site and others, is that companies have their own people who browse the web and 'write reviews' for their products at different sites. Hence the 5/5 star ratings.

Now, you might wonder what Cryptic, the company behind the game, is doing about all of these problems? NOTHING. Send them a message asking to be helped out, and they'll reply 'Check your DXDiag' which is a test of your DirectX program. When the tests come out fine, they will respond 'Update your video card driver', not knowing that us poor saps already paid hundreds of dollars to ensure that we had the very best sytsems running so the game would play well. And when you go to reply to that email, you'll get a message saying 'You haven't responded in over 72 hours, so your problem has been labeled as solved'. Unfortunately for you, it has only been 24 hours, so not only are they lying to get out of it, but your problem is NOT solved.

So you'll speak to all the other gamers on the forum about the problems you're all having, and when the dev team finally does respond on the forum, what do they do? They reply 'Thanks for your input', and then they CLOSE THE THREAD, not allowing you to speak about the subject anymore.

Oh and by the way, you think you'll just return the game and get a refund? Too bad. Each game disc has a special code that you activate to play. Once the code is activated, that disc cannot be exchanged. You're stuck with it. We're all suckers for these creeps.

What this is, people, is a RIP-OFF. This company is knowingly taking everyone's money and giving you nothing in return. That is illegal.

It has nothing to do with your system being too low, because even those of us with high end systems have the same problem.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON THIS 'GAME'. I hesitate to use the term 'game', because there's no such thing to really speak of. If you want a super-hero online game, wait for Marvel Comics' version, coming in a year or two. Belive me, it will be better to wait than waste your money on this fraud.

It's an okay game.. If you're 8.

I found my self doing repitive tasks over and over, Once you hit level 14, all you do is bank-grind (Get a group, find a bank quest, kill all mobs in it, then exit, team leader will reset the quest and rinse & repeat)

Not very fun at all, unless you don't know what fun is, it's not worth 15/mo.

High Hopes

I wanted to Love this Game...
and parts of it are very well done...
Hero Creation... Graphics... Effects...
warning... you can't start out with a cape...
you Can't fly until Level 14... Cape at Level 20
you can't carry a Pistole and a sword...
there's this thing called experience debt...
after level 10... if you die...
it reduces th amount of experience you've accumulated...
you have to Fight to get back to where you where before you can continue to Level up...
the whole concept is very UnHeroic, (maybe in a Wall St. simulator)
the explanation I got was it was to force players to be more strategic...
and less Hap-hazard, which is fine...
unless your Hero is More Wolverine in nature...
then being "Forced" to play strategically becomes less fun and more force...
one more thing if you're the kind of player who likes to explore,
there is exploring to be done...
but you can't go into every building...
I'm sure there' a good explanation for that,
(Like it would make the game Huge with long load and download times)
I found it disappointing...
but to me the biggest disappointment...
movement and Battle...
probably if you play allot of first person shooters...
it might come naturally to you...
(select your target...
push 1 2 3 4 wait for powers to recharge...
push 1 2 3 4 wait for powers to recharge...
push 1 2 3 4 wait for powers to recharge...
push 1 2 3 4 wait for powers to recharge...
push 1 2 3 4 wait for powers to recharge...)
I'm a Diablo/DungeonSiege fan... so everything was just Frustrating!!!
did I mention that Movement and battle where Frustrating?
and if your trying to spin left... and face an attacker...
use the left arrow... oops your finger hit the "Ins" key...
you are now looking straight up at your own Buttox...
which one of these keys restores me to default View?
never mind... I'm dead
here's the good news.. almost all the keys are remapable...
I ended up remaping allot of them to my GamePad...
but you still have to use the mouse and keyboard...
because eventually...
you have to click on a door to open it etc...
and there's no way to remape the left mouse click to a GamePad Button...
(unless you Download a little FreeWare Program called "Joy to Key")
(JoytoKey lets you map "any" Key or Mouse button to a GamePad)
now most PC gamer Purest will frown on you using a gamepad...
and to that I say "Bight Me"!
I used a Rock to type out this review...

all that being said...
I did enjoy enough of this game to make it worth the $20 I spent on it...
(that includes 30 free days... which os more than enough)
I liked the hero creation... and I thought it made a good Graphical Chat Room...
but I'm not Paying $15 a month to chat...

more notes:
once your hero gets to a high enough level...
just run past that little old lady getting Mugged...
you'll get no experience points for saving her retched little life...

in some arias there are so many Villains...
you really are forced to join a team...
or die...
is your Ideal SuperHero more of a lone Crusader?
Tough...

oh I almost forgot...
the first thing you have to do before you play City of Heroes...
wait for the game to download this HUGE update
issue No.7 it's over Two Gigabytes...
I have a Cable connection... it took me around 3 hours...
if you have a 56k modem... Fa Gid a Boud it...

oh... and if your teenager or younger...
you Need a Credit card... or Debit Card...
even to play the free 30 day trial...

did I mention that Movement and battle where Frustrating?

My review of this game is not intended to reflect poorly on the good job
Amazon or GameStop did in the purchasing Process which was seamless and timely
