A great concept, but lacks depth

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 3

Most people enjoy City of Heroes and City of Villians. At least for a while. I own both games, and both games play pretty much the same. The classes are virtually identicle, except that instead of the "Defender" you have the "Mastermind". The game has added features since release, from bases and lairs to unlockable classes and the ability to store several costumes. But overall, this great concept falls short of expectations.
The game is basically an action RPG. You do various randomly generated missions, get experience and influence (which is money) then get more abilities. Do this a few hundred times or so and you've built your character as powerful as it will ever be.
Honestly, this game will show you everything there is to see within the first few days. Though it may sound harsh, there are plenty of single player games out there with more replayability. Even with the newest additions that help the game, there isn't enough depth for an MMO you pay $15/month for.
However, the people that do play this game create an amazing community. Getting into a good supergroup (or villian group) may keep you playing for months. If you like to roleplay, this game may appeal to you, even if the sometimes mind-numing repetitive action doesn't. Good role-playing may even be enough to keep the game interesting.
City of Heroes or City of Villians is a great concept. It IS fun for a little while, but if you are expecting to be entertained for months...you may want to look elsewhere. City of Heroes is one of those games that may collect dust for months after you get bored, then you decide to active your account for a month or two, play a little, then get bored again. That goes to show how powerful the concept itself is, but its too bad there isn't more to keep you engaged.

Character creation is worth it alone, devoted developers are a bonus.

Consider my rating 4 1/2 stars.

The character creation is still the best of any MMO despite being 3+ years old and gives COH unlimited replay value on the character creation alone. But the best part of COH are the devoted developers. I have never played another MMO that had as devoted developers as City of Heroes does! They constantly come out with free expansions and are always doing things that improve the game. Honestly, COH was only a 4 star game when it came out but because of the devoted developers it has gone up to 4 1/2. The reality in the new MMO world is people play many different MMOs now and very few exclusively but which ones do they keep going back to? There are only a few games that people keep going back to and City of Heroes is one of them, especially when you get an inspiration for a new character.

Connectivity Issues Abound

The graphics are beautiful and the gameplay is a blast...when you can maintain a connection.

Unfortunately, disconnects are so frequent (I've had eight or more in a ten minute span multiple times) that all of the wonderful features of the game are rendered nothing but a tease.

The game simply does not work because the user's connection is reliably unreliable, and this issue afflicts most machines that greatly exceed the so-called "system requirements" advertised by NCSoft.

As I said, I have had multiple disconnects in just a few minutes' of gameplay time again and again, and I run a 3 GHz P4 with 512 Mb RAM and a 128 Mb graphics card via a cable modem connection.

And what's NCsoft's answer to this obviously serious flaw?

Well...ignore it and blame users' machines for the problem. And don't forget to delete posts at the company boards that mention the "disconnect" thing too much.

If you like a lot of cool features that you will rarely be able to use for more than a few minutes at a time, this is the game for you.

Character Creation and You.

Hi all, I just wanted to say that this game is awesome. A little easy, but I just came from FFXI Online and LET ME TELL YOU: This is far better.

For those of you who complain about having to pay monthly: DON'T GET AN MMORPG IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DO THAT! They need the money to keep the servers up, and EVERY OTHER MMOG DOES THE SAME! This cost is less than FFXI and it gives you UNLIMITED characters, so don't start.

The best part was not having to "farm" or argue over NM spawns and loot. It lets you focus on meeting people, and generally having a good time with the game.

sweet game sucks they keep changing it :(

this game is a really really fun game while some might like it for a month i have enjoyed it for a long time the only problem is they keep changing the game i've learned to just go with the flow and just addapt to the changes, other then the changes and the fact that the game at day 1 was better then the game right now this game is still really cool and fun and if your a new player you'll enjoy the game and if your old then just addapt to the changes like i have and still have a great time and a good toon that was as good as he was on day 1

Total DISAPPOINTMENT

This game is a total disappointment!!! for two reasons;

1) It is not a stand-alone game <--gonna cost you $$$
2) Won't play on all recent pc's <--gonna cost you more $$$$$

I bought this game because I like the genre and RPG games. I'm no game nerd so i had absolutely no idea that this game can only be played over the internet for a FEE. In my opinion that is such a waste. Considering that there are sooo many more RPG games that you can play online for free and, more importantly to me, they are STAND ALONE.

I run an ATI radeon 9000 which falls in between the min and recommended hardware listed on the box. After several hours of hunting the net for the latest drivers and downloads it still won't run. Of course at the website they tell you that you should probally have one of their affiliate's computers. $$$$$$

This game is such a total disappointment. If you have no life and all you do is stay at home and play computer games and spend all your money chasing the latest upgrades than this is surely the game for you. Hopefully someone will pull their head out of there back pocket and create a game similar to this that comes with cities/levels/boards/worlds, or whatever so you could just play on your own at your own pace.

Too bad it really looks like alot of fun.

Great character generation but that is about all...

Boy what a dissappointing game. The city is boring and the missions are redundant. And they certainly could have done better to make the scenery a little less drab. I have seen better graphics in Grand Theft Auto. The character generation is fabulous and the costumes and customization is really nice. But after that, it sort of goes down hill. There is so little content. The only thing they really managed to do right was make the 'dungeons' lockable to a single character or group. What a waste. If you just have to play an MMORPG, there are much better ones out there. Providing you actually have standards and aren't just obsessed with wearing a cape and spandex. If that is your only concern, then by all means...

Caution - you must pay monthly subscription

I played this game at a friend's house for several hours and was only moderatley entertained. I guess I just have a beef with paying $50.00 for a software license and then having to pay another $30.00 to log onto a server and use that license. Same with any of these online, role-playing games. I'd probably be singing a different tune if the game just blew me away, but it didn't even come close. But then, I tried and hated EverQuest too, so maybe these role-playing games just aren't for me. I prefer real life. :-)

To the precious reviewer: The fact that it requires a subscription should be in a very conspicuous location at the point of sale, but I looked and didn't see it. I already knew about it because my friend told me, but I think your comment about "remedial reading" is unjustified. It's like selling someone a computer and then telling them later that it requires a power supply. Hello!! Someone who's not computer litereate doesn't know that. And in this case someone who - up until this point - has only played traditional non-online games might not know that it requires a monthly fee. Remember: Some of us have lives beyond games.

This Game Would Be Great Except For The Developers

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 8

I got this game when it first came out, and it was tremendously fun (if repetitive). . .until the developers started tweaking their game. Apparently, the original game was not the one the developers--including lead developer "Statesman"--wanted to release. Thus began a long series of "rebalancing" patches that completely changed the way the game had to be played. I stuck with the game for a couple of issues, quit, returned a year later, stuck through another two issues, then quit for a final time.

The main reason I quit both times was because the abilities that I earned through playing the game were severely de-powered with different patches. When the players complained about this situation on the forums, the developers responded by saying we were getting more value out of the game by having to learn to play it all over again.

I was severely disappointed in the lack of professionalism displayed by the development team on their game forums. I ultimately quit and shattered my game disks so that I would never again have the temptation of playing--fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, fool me a third time? Not going to happen.

I thought that all MMORPGs were like that, and resolved never to play another one--but I recently picked up World of Warcraft and have been enjoying it tremendously. I would suggest WoW over CoH any day of the week.

A Game Into Oblivion

Played this game for well over a year. The developers kept constantly hacking up the game with issues each one progressively worse. The last one was too much. Played Diablo II for 5 years this one did not make it to 2 years. Research your purchase on this one. There are many games out there that demand a commitment of time with little reward in the end. I did enjoy the game but I am leaving while I am still having fun. The next issue will kill that I know.
