listen, to be honest this game wasn't put together with a lot of care. I don't care if it's a cult classic now-a-days, when I got it brand new for my birthday way back when it ruined my whole day! in any one of the seven quests you can get lost in the first hour. it'll start out giving you some basic direction then abandon you like a child in the mall. determined not to waste a birthday present I purchased the strategy guide over a year later. for some reason I found myself pouring 20hours into the first quest... and at least that much in each of the six more. the charm from this game comes not from the muddy graphics, lame music, or sometimes bare bones plot, but from the thrill of improving your characters. magic quests can be lengthy but well worth it and sometimes necessary, and even in typical battles there is always that small chance an enemy will drop a very rare and powerful item. traveling all over the world to gain a measly several thousand credits... there's something so engrossing about all of if. there are a TON of weapons and armor to find in this game and a good amount of depth to the battle system. if it is possible for any of you I recommend you borrow the game or rent it first. and no matter what, your going to need a strategy guide so cruise ebay.

Too long, and too boring equals a bad game.

One of the worst Square works I've seen yet. It was a good idea to have hundreds of scenarios and things to do in a game but once you add all of the characters and what they have to do it's too boring to take the time and effort in finishing the game. Their story lines were underdeveloped and never maintained a focus point throughout the game. The battle system could have used a little more work and the physical attacks verses magic were not balanced well.

Kick [butt] game!!!

Hate it or Love it

This seems to be one of those games that people either hate or love, and personally I'm on the "love" team.
It definitely has its downfalls; the dialogue is shoddy, and some of the plots are very lacking, but I really love the concept. Seven different storylines to choose from, seven different characters to play as, and any of their storylines can cross over at any point. I also enjoyed all the different worlds you can travel to, and monsters you can battle.

The different character types were also very cool.
You had your garden-variety humans; mechs or robots; mystics, which have the ability to learn special magics; monsters, which can absorb enemy abilities and forms; and there were a few cross-breeds and special characters as well.

There were certain places and quests that were specific to a storyline, but there were also quests that you could choose to partake in with almost every character. The rewards were gaining certain magical abilities, or special weapons, etc. to help you in the game.
There was also an interesting battle system that allows you to create combos of certain abilities, which do a greater amount of damage and can lead to certain super abilities; they're hard to predict and perfect, but so far I've found they're only essential to one storyline, which is that of the monster Riki.

To sum up, SaGa Frontier may be far from the best game ever created, but it is unique and has provided me with hours and hours of enjoyable gameplay.

Where's the Plot?

This game has no sense of linearity to it at all... You spend most of the game trying to figure out where to go next, and mostly being wrong. I can't even really say this game was remotely fun to play. In fact, the only reason I kept playing was because I was hoping to find some kind of story hidden in this madness... but I didn't.

The game boasts seven different main characters, all with their own backgrounds and skills. You can play the game as any one of them, while meeting the rest along the way. The problem is that all the intertwining story-lines get so crosswired that after a while you don't remember who's character you are really playing, and what your original goal was.

In the same respect, the game is huge. Once you get past a certain stage, the entire world is left before you, and you can go where you want, and do what you want, without having to stay within the confines of your particular storyline. Some people may like this freedom, but I found it annoying! I love the idea of being able to explore the world on my own, but I never had a sense of purpose throughout the game. I never really knew where to go next, and every time I went to a new city I just felt like I was going around in circles and not making any progress.

Needless to say, I haven't completed this game, and I don't plan on it anytime soon. This game is just bad! If you want to wander aimlessly around a series of cartoony cities, each with hidden dungeons and shops and no sense of purpose whatsoever, then by all means get this game. I for one would rather spend my money on a nice root canal, or perhaps a spinal tap.

Stay Away

This was the most boring game I've ever bought. Don't let the description of multiple games with multiple characters fool you. It's one game that you go through with various times with different characters. The valiant effort of a very non-linear storyline was marred by the fact that it was so non-linear that the stories were often left being incoherent. It's tedious going through the same mini-quests over and over. Most of the characters could have been a good choice to have their own full game.

This was a good idea, playing through multiple games where you meet up with past characters that you played, but the games needs a huge overhaul in order to give it more variety.

If you have a LOT of time to kill and are very easily amused and find this game for very cheap, give it a whirl. Otherwise, find a decent game or play Final Fantasy VII for the 10th time. It will be much more interesting.

A good idea....but that's it.

Saga Frontier was a good idea for a non-linear RPG, but that is about it. The game seemed to be lost in it self. Trying to be so many different things at once, but failing to be good at any of them. All, of the storys are pretty boring. The battle system is nothing you haven't seen before. All in all not a very good game.

This game bites!

For starters, I only gave is a star because there was no option to give it 0. I have never been so dissapionted in a game. Not only was the gameplay bad, but the quests were the most random, illogical, and boring pains that I sold the game to babbages for less than half the price I paid and was thankful they gave me as much as they did. If you like good RPG's, DO NOT get this game. I'm only trying to save you from losing faith in Square (who usually produces the best games I've ever seen).

Skip this one and get SaGa Frontier 2 instead

I heard about his game and it's non linear story, and I thought it may be something like Chrono Trigger. Who the heck was I kidding? Non-linear story? More like no story. The dialogue is choppy, and reminds me of some sort of cross between Godzilla and the Power Rangers. You don't get involved in the gameplay and it's more tedious than fun. If you want to try a "non-linear" game, get SaGa Frontier 2. In that one, you choose scenarios on a map, and in doing so you can create a unique history. This also prevents the nightmare of figuring out what the heck you do next that you find in SaGa Frontier. So, in conclusion, this is one of the first times i'll advise you to skip the first, and go on to the sequel.

If you want a *good* RPG, skip this one.

Saga Frontier is one of the worst efforts by Squaresoft. It boasts over 100 hours of play, but 90% of that time is spent wandering around the world thinking "What the heck am I supposed to do next! "
