Gripping Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 10 / 11

I enjoyed this game on so many levels: graphics, originality, plot, ease of interface, puzzle challenges.

The scary atmosphere set by the creator is top-notch. Playing the game at home alone in the dark increased the thrill factor. The various time shifts and layers of puzzles kept my attention throughout. The level of detail & backstory is astounding & really contributed to the gaming experience. I wanted to solve the game, not just for myself, but for all the characters who had become almost real by the end.

There were a few huh? spots where I had to check hints & walk-throughs, but not too many. One or two spots that required frantic pixel hunting, but not too bad.

I got so involved in the game and taking notes & making diagrams, that I stayed up till all hours on more than one occasion. Also, my main worry became "what if I get hit by a bus & someone has to get into my apt and finds my Dark Fall notes about ghosts and demons & strange runes and thinks I'm completely cracked?" :-)

I 'm a big fan of the series. Dark Fall: Lights Out is wonderful as well!

Alone with a Ghost Train, Creepy Shadows & a Deadly Secret

The Fantasy:
An unnerving phone message left by your brother sends you off to an abandoned train station and hotel to find him. You are greeted by a mysterious little boy who leads you in the direction to get started, then vanishes. You are on your own now, totally alone....except for a few shadows darting about here and there, some ghostly beings who range from the cranky to the kind, disembodied voices, doors shutting on their own, the echo of footsteps, and a train that rattles your bones every time it passes through even though the track has been closed for ages.

Oh, did I mention that besides your brother, the hotel staff, several guests, and a couple of paranormal researchers all disappeared without a trace, leaving all their belongings behind?

Well, now it is up to you to figure out just what happened. You get to explore plenty of rooms in the dilapidated train station and spooky old hotel, dig through closets and drawers, fiddle with gadgets, and discover oodles of clues to piece together in order to reveal the dreadful details of exactly what became of the missing and what could happen to you.

The Reality:
*Dark Fall* is a fun, easy to play game with gorgeous graphics, lots of menacing details, an eerie soundtrack, and a dark ominous atmosphere. I could almost feel the damp mist clinging to my skin. Also, you get numerous rooms to snoop through and a nice little bounty of objects to pick-up and examine. If you are like me and enjoy leisurely searching every nook and cranny, then you'll like this.

Some of the hotspots can be tricky so keep that pointer moving and a sharp eye out. The navigation is smooth and, although it's been a few months since I played, I don't recall any problem areas.

Have fun and watch your back!

I bought this game just to try something different. It installed easily and has (knock wood) never locked up or crashed. There are lots of locations to explore and the haunted atmosphere is great fun. This is a great one to try with a candle burning and all the lights off. It's easy to get started, but the puzzles are still challenging. A great buy for anyone who enjoys a mystery. It's like stepping into an old fashioned thriller. No blood & gore just lots of thrills & chills.

Try a little harder...

Having a limited amount of time for computer games and the like, I try to pick adventure games that will intrigue me and be visually stimulating. Dark Fall: The Journal was neither. There is minimal character interaction, clumsy navigation, and sub-par writing. The design is far from intuitive and the hot-spots are easy to miss. There are so many random objects and writings everywhere that you wonder what is relevant and what is not. Overall, I found this game to be a waste of time and would rather play one of Syberia games.

best darndest thriller i've ever played!!!!!!

GREAT ANIMATIONS, GREAT CHARACTERS, GREAT STORY, GREAT EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! I love to get scared out of my witts and if yiu like to do that too, BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!! I've played all of the nancy drews and sherlock holmes games but this one is truly scary! I was playing it by myself in the daytime in a room with 6 windows and was still petrified. You get a message from your brother that is researching ghosts at and abandoned train motel that was abandoned and claimed to be haunted ever since 7 guests mysteriously vanished. It has an extremely large setting with 4 floors, a kitchen, a bar, a dining room, and the train tracks, and the whole outdoors too. Plus, there is a train station. You can go in about 96% of the rooms and on one floor, the lights start going out one by one, on another, you hear a violin playing, and in one of the 7 guests' rooms, a ghostly voice starts talking to you!!!! SCARY!!! When you get there, you hear the voice of a young boy, but you can't see him!!! And, you can't find your brother. One of the ghostly voices talks about and evil that has taken over the dark and deadly train station. This is a must-have. BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!

Read a book instead

GAME THEME: Super complex web of a dozen characters that you never meet, but learn about via reading numerous newspaper articles, journals, computer files, writings on the wall, etc. These characters are all dead, we simply read about their past (what they ate, their relationship with others, their careers, their emotions). You will spend your entire game wandering around an old hotel and the surrounding grounds. Lots of supernatural stuff, like ghosts, spirits and demons.

PUZZLES: Puzzles are very systematic and can only be solved with the help of a walk-through guide, so don't even begin this game without one. Examples of puzzles include:
- repeating a pattern of symbols as seen in various other screens, put together is a "meaningful" order

NAVIGATION: Super easy point and click. Graphic are very dark and almost colorless. Well done, but nothing really moves and nothing is particulary inspiring to look at.

MISC: You will spend most of your time reading dozens of items, and writing them down in hopes that they may be useful. There are dozens of objects that can be read or looked at closely that have no function in the game.

The reading is sooo extensive, with soooo many details of each character that I would reccommend reading a drama book instead of playing this game.

A Spooky Little Game

I really enjoyed this game. It's not overly hard so even beginner gamers can get through it. And sometimes one doesn't want to play something that you have to think about too much. What I especially liked about this game was that it really WAS spooky. I just happened to start playing the game around 3 in the morning, had the lights off and actually had to keep looking behind me. I just wish the game had been a little longer.

Kept me very busy for a couple of nights. Lots of good puzzles that are, on the whole, very logical and therefore solvable. Good atmosphere and voice acting, beautiful graphics.

I Can't Wait to Play the Sequel!

"Dark Fall: The Journal" is one of the spookiest games I've ever played! The creators of this product used just the right sights & sounds to really freak you out at times - especially if you're playing late at night like I tend to do...

"Dark Fall" is set in an old train station & hotel that had been shut down in the 1940's due to the disappearances of several people - a mystery that had never been solved. Because of these disappearances, and talk of quite a few disappearances from long ago, this site is considered by many to be extremely haunted...

At the present time, a young architect has gone there to create plans for turning this into a modern-day nightclub and he's joined by a couple of college students who plan to do a very technical ghosthunting mission as part of their studies.

After receiving a very disturbing & urgent message from your architect brother, asking you to come right away, you appear on the scene - and find yourself completely alone - your brother & the college kids have vanished, just like all the others. It will be your "job" to find the clues & put everything together to find out what happened to them, as well as to all the others who have also disappeared from this "evil" place.

There is a great variety of rooms/scenes to check out while playing this game and, although you don't need to find lots of items for your inventory, you will need to take notes about what you do find along the way (be sure to have a notebook handy).

Overall, I found "Dark Fall: The Journal" to be an excellent mystery game with a great surprise ending! As such, I would highly recommend it to those who enjoy this genre of computer games - and at this price, it's truly a bargain!

I adore mystery/puzzle games and Dark Fall was right up my alley. With a go-at-your own pace, spooky ambience and puzzles with integrated solutions, this game kept me on the edge of my seat--I have to admit, when I reached the closing puzzles, I was tempted to save the game because I was too creeped out to continue! Highly recommended.
