Lots of fun

This game made me think through every move carefully, weighing the possible consequences. Imagine chess played with soldiers in a post-Apocalytic urban wasteland. Lots of blood and salty language. Note that my version would not load on Windows ME! Perhaps there has been a patch by now, but be sure to check.

Watch out for the drugs. They really enhance your performance, but my character became addicted after one use.

I did not play the game all the way through. By the time I got to the first mission with a vehicle, it had become too repetitive. But I normally don't play games to the end, anyway. I don't have enough time, and there are so many good ones waiting.

Let me start off by saying that I would have given this game 4 1/2 stars, but that wasn't an option. Now I guess I'm supposed to write a review for this game, huh? So, should I start with the fact that it's the only game that I would even think of playing through more than once? I play all the games like Diablo 1&2 and Baldur's Gate 1&2 that you are supposed to play through more than once (more than twice even), and I just find that boring. Then this awesome game called Fallout Tactics comes along and ruins my whole philosophy of playing games once and forgeting about them. Unfortunately for the makers of this game, it didn't really appeal to the Fallout 1&2 fans because it was a tactical combat game, and it didn't apppeal to other people because of the "Fallout" name. It got great reviews by everyone who played it, but not that many people gave it that chance. What is really cool about this game is that it is like an RPG without all the talk and desicion making. Other than that, every thing from character creation to the fighting to the options of items to buy and sell is all based on RPGs. I think that makes this game a lot of fun to play. In another review it was mentioned that it might not be good for people who haven't play RPGs before. Well, I never played any RPGs before I bought it (I started buying games from that genre after I played this game) , and I'm willing to say that this has got to be the best game that I've ever played. The only problem that I've ever had with this game is that the huge maps sometimes create some lag when trying to move the screen. But them again, I'm using an outdated 32MB graphics card on my computer. Also, there is one bug that continuously has interrupted the game, causing me to have to return to the last place I saved (I'm not one of those people that "saves often"). So, to sum up this review, buy this game, have fun, and save often. Later, man.

Mixed emotions on freedom

I like Fallout and the freedom it normally has. I also like the new squad tactics concept that Fallout Tactics brings in. My only real dislike to Tactics is the lack of freedom to do anything. Nothing exists until the game needs it for the plot. There are no freelance missions like Fallout has been known for.
Other than that I think it is a great game. There are excellent options (for individual units) and the plot is good and long.

Near perfect

I have played the other two Fallout games more than once. I didn't enjoy Fallout 2 as much as Fallout, but it was still enjoyable. BOS is a nice departure in the sense that you actually control and develope six characters that, more or less, do what you tell them most of the time.

I enjoy the spontaneous nature of the game and the idea of tactical play with a squad. I think this is as close to X-Com:UFO as I have been able to get. I feel that X-Com is the greatest game I have played prior to the Fallout series. The Fallout world is beautifully done, in a dark kind of way. The strange music and the stark scenery help to transform your experience into a great role playing experience without having to deal with magic and people casting spells on your characters.

The strangeness generally comes as a result of exposure to radiation or something real and not some fantasy world with elves and dragons. Which gives the experience a realistic sort of feel. It doesn't feel like you are on you way to Mordor with Frodo but walking down the streets of Cleveland after something awful has happened.

The control of the characters is excellent. The missions are mostly about the combat with some other elements tossed in for adventure and fun. And you know, it works. Just the right blend of combat and quest. Fallout 2 was a little tedious for me.

I think anyone that enjoys RPG's or adventure/strategy gaming will like the Fallout series and BOS in particular.

Not half bad

I was a bit dubious about the value of a Fallout game that is completely based on tactical engagement. After all, the real strength of both Fallout 1 and 2 was in the story and setting rather than the combat. Fallout Tactics struck me as a fun addition to the series, but definitely not the Fallout game that a newcomer should start with. The reason I say this is that the combat grind of the game can get wearisome, and it will be pretty severe on the difficulty side for someone who has no idea how to play.

Aside from the fact that it's hard to outdo a classic, FOT makes no pretense of having an in-depth story or serious interaction with non-player characters. In other words, it's definitely not an RPG. You are given very specific guidelines for each mission, and you carry out your orders, no questions asked. To help you on your way, you can recruit various Brotherhood soldiers and fully control them. By fully control, I mean they're basically identical to a player character- the only difference is they don't have traits. Don't you wish you could have done that with your loyal followers in the RPGs?

As for game improvements, the engine has been improved a great deal. You can now crouch to reduce your target profile, get a better view from high up, and engage enemies that aren't stupid. You can also drive vehicles and use them in combat. The graphics are all completely new, which makes it fun to see just for the sake of seeing it. There are a host of new weapons, including many guns that probably should have been in the old Fallouts (where did all the MP-5s, Colts, and Berettas go?). There's also a ton of new items of various worth- the usual worthless but funny items and some that you might actually use, such as meds and of course the steroids.

Additionally, there is a new 'continuous turn based' mode- a fancy way of saying 'real time.' It's something you will probably never use, unless you hopelessly outgun your enemies, or you're looking for a quick trip to the morgue. The action looks pretty neat in real-time, but the difficulty of the missions makes it impractical. If you want, you can give orders to your characters so they act more or less autonomously, making real-time feasible, but what's the fun with that?

The bottom line is, if you've played and enjoyed Fallout, and the unique combat system in particular, you'll also enjoy this. If you're looking for an RPG or a continuation of the previous plot line, this isn't it. Also, if you're looking for a completely unique turn-based trategy game, you should check this one out.

Fallout Does It Again

Fallout and Fallout 2 are some of the absolute best RPGs ever made. The reason I think so is the fact that they're set in a world that we've all thought about one time or another; a world that has been almost wiped clean of human life by some kind of disaster, and how mankind has to struggle to stay alive. Not only was the setting nice, but the game itself had an element of almost complete freedom; you could say what you wanted to, and go wherever you wanted. You didn't have to complete quests in a certain order, and some you didn't even have to bother with altogether. You could be the bad guy instead of the good guy.

So when Fallout Tactics: BOS came out, I jumped at the chance to get my hands on it. I wasn't let down. All the excitement of the first two titles, featuring improved graphics, animation effects, and a new assortment of weapons. The freedom element isn't like it was in the previous two, but you can still wander about the wastelands looking to pick a fight.

You get to customize a team of up to six operatives, the first being your main character (which you can customize yourself). Each will have strengths and weaknesses in certain areas, but it's good to have a well-rounded team. You'll battle raiders, super mutants, Beastlords, deathclaws, and many other tough enemies. You'll need to pick open locked doors, disarm explosive devices, administer medical attention, and even steal items from the unsuspecting. Plus, they've added vehicles to your outdoor combat, giving you a bit of protection against the heavier weapons (like M60's and rocket launchers).

Excellent strategy game. Lots of fun, and fits perfectly in the Fallout universe. If you get a chance, grab a copy of this. You have to experience it to believe it.

This Game is absolutely awesome. I haven't encountered a game of this difficulty since the days of Nintendo. I love the fact that the designers made this for hardcore gamers, not the mainstream gamers who only like flash and flare. One of its more unique qualities is that it is a violent game that INVOLVES thinking. Not just an array of button-mashing. Hardcore Gamers and Mainstream gamers who want to think will greatly adore this masterpiece.

I really don't know why so many people have such a problem with this game. It's not the same as Fallout, and it's not supposed to be. I'm a huge fan of the series, and Fallout 2 is my favorite PC game of all time. Maybe I just have a different view on this game becasue, unlike so many others, Fallout Tactics is the game that introduced me to the wonderful world of Fallout in the first place, and I worked my way backwards from there to Fallout 2 and then the original itself. I think the game is great: it has the gritty atmosphere and awesome action sequences that made the first games so popular, but Tactics adds more of an action/strategy flavor to the mix. After all, that's what Fallout Tactics is; an action game, not an RPG. If everyone keeps that in mind I don't think so many people would have a problem with it. It is a fun and entertaining game

Tactics in the Fallout World...

Guys and gals, please, remember that the box says 'Fallout TACTICS,' not 'Fallout 3.' If you take into account that this is a strategy game in the Fallout world, this game is incredible, with reasonable replay value. Now, I played Fallout and Fallout 2 three and two times each [respectively], back-to-back. Tactics I managed two, then had to wait a while. Incredible game, as long as you realize that it is not one of the Fallout RPGs; rather, it is a new branch in the series, and, personally, I am very fond of it. If you want to criticize something, do the console Fallout BOS.

And I thought Fallout 2 was a masterpiece!

This game is amazing. The continous turn-based (CTB) system is pure genius. For those familiar with the fallout engine, movement is free, but shooting and stance changes cost action points. Action points regenerate in real time based upon agility. Battles are much more engaging without the long pauses while the enemy takes its turn. CTB makes vehicles absolutely awesome. Some of the vehicles have guns mounted on them so you can drive through groups of enemies and just mow them down. The vehicles can be targeted in battle to cripple them.

You can have zombies, super mutants, deathclaws and dogs join your squad. This game is 95% combat which is a different from the first two Fallout titles.

Interplay just posted an 80 megabyte patch that fixed all the problems referenced in another review. I pity those with 56k connnections.
