Not as fun as the other two, but still fun...

Well, I also was quite worried what this new fallout would be like when I heard about it. It definitely is not a true fallout sequel, but it is a nice little diversion in the fallout universe. There are many different settings that will appeal to either the turn-based or real-time players. Perks and skill points are also used when upgrading your character so fans of the first two will feel right at home here. If you enjoyed the first two fallout games, you should at least give this a chance. You may find that you will enjoy it more than you thought you would.

Fallout Tactics in a Nutshell

Of all the Fallout games this is the only one that focuses on combat more than anything. This isn't the regular Fallout RPG because you lose a ton of plot. If you played the other two Fallouts (1 and 2) then this is a must! Though in my opinion you should probably play those first. You get backround knowledge and it just makes the game a lot more fun.

I only give this 4 stars in fun because it can be extremely difficult at times. For me, the mutants were extremely hard.

I just ordered this game on the 3rd and I am anticipating its arrival.

This isn't about role-playing so much as it is about combat.

Fallout Tactics is much superior to Fallout 1 & 2

This is the way the game should have been from the beginning. I am not much of a fan of role playing because of in incessant dialog and having to wait your turn. I am a big fan of first person shooters and this game really hit all of my pleasure sensors.
The game is BIG! I really enjoyed exploring the levels. Lot of little things to keep busy. I liked being able to control my character in the middle of a fire fight rather than just stand there like a dumb lump and take hits.
The animation and background art is extremely good. Incredible detail brings the futuristic world of Fallout to life.

The best part is the bargaining, stealing, gambling, upgrading character traits and weapons. I have more fun at the bunkers than in the missions if that's possible. Just a great game all around. Highly recommended.

Good Game...

Overall this game is pretty fun, and it kept me busy for 3 months (I can only waste my time on sundays)
the bad parts:

Controls: the controls are pretty complicated but I got the hang of it because I play alot of RTS anyways, but if you dont you will have a hard time controling your 3-4 man army.

Bugs: they are some bugs that didnt bother me but there is this one bug that you cant see the insides of the building if you walk in. That really annoyed me alot especially if the have people shooting at you.

Melee characters dont shine on this game: If your that type of person like myself. That want to beat the sense out of your enemies with a slegehammer. Well im sorry to disappoint you but after the 5th or 6th mission your better strap up because you will get gunned down before you even get near your enemies. The most disappointing thing is that the sneak skill is useless. Thats right, if you thinking fallout 2 where you can critically punch a deathclaw in the eye and deal 343 damage think again. It doesnt work here if you even try sneak towards a person you will get caught and your cant even sneak again. even if you hide behind a wall. Its such a shame. Ive been using melee characters since baldur's Gate. To me guns and magic are for p****es. This game doesnt give any melee characters a fighting chance.

Get the Bad Gear or Get Owned: Just like the previous fallout games.. at the time were the baddies get Miniguns, pulse rifles and Power Armor. Small guns and rocket launchers become useless and you are forced to use energy weapons. Fallout 2 had a mega power fist that rocked. well the mega power fist sucks on power armor this game.

Linear Story: The story is linear and it will turn many fallot fans off. You are forced to do th 20 missions or you are screwed.

Overall the game is fun. dont let my negative talk prevent you from buying the game. You can make a character of any type except melee which increase the fun factor and replay value. The are even perks (were you can get a bonus or have a unique skill) some of then are useless (like hear and now) If your a fan of RTS or fallout games you will love this game. Its pretty cool and quite difficult. I love games that are hard, but if you dont like hard games look elsewhere, or set the difficulty on easy.

Near perfect

I have played the other two Fallout games more than once. I didn't enjoy Fallout 2 as much as Fallout, but it was still enjoyable. BOS is a nice departure in the sense that you actually control and develope six characters that, more or less, do what you tell them most of the time.

I enjoy the spontaneous nature of the game and the idea of tactical play with a squad. I think this is as close to X-Com:UFO as I have been able to get. I feel that X-Com is the greatest game I have played prior to the Fallout series. The Fallout world is beautifully done, in a dark kind of way. The strange music and the stark scenery help to transform your experience into a great role playing experience without having to deal with magic and people casting spells on your characters.

The strangeness generally comes as a result of exposure to radiation or something real and not some fantasy world with elves and dragons. Which gives the experience a realistic sort of feel. It doesn't feel like you are on you way to Mordor with Frodo but walking down the streets of Cleveland after something awful has happened.

The control of the characters is excellent. The missions are mostly about the combat with some other elements tossed in for adventure and fun. And you know, it works. Just the right blend of combat and quest. Fallout 2 was a little tedious for me.

I think anyone that enjoys RPG's or adventure/strategy gaming will like the Fallout series and BOS in particular.

Least of the Best, But still good

I must say that Fallout 1 and 2 are my favorite RPGs ever. Due to their non-linearity, a storyline that is epic but not only that, it was done in a hugely customizable way. They give you a world, you create most of the story.

This is one thing I resent about Tactics: you are pushed in one direction and one direction only. Of course there are moments when you can choose from two missions, for which one to accomplish first, but in the end they all must get done. The last area is the only time you have a chance to make an affect on the ending, but the endings can be interesting especially if you're a fan of the series. If they don't make a new Fallout RPG in the future, I'll be extremely disappointed.

Those points aside it is a far-above average tactical, squad-based game at the time it came out and still good today. Your characters can be greatly customized. It can be nice to keep all them alive because newly recruited squad mates may not be as completely tailored to squad needs, but overall there's no need to fret as you can hire more. Just don't let the main character die or - game over.

You create a main character with who is better in some base attributes than others, such as perception, strength, intelligence, etc. Your other squad members have these set by the computer. These factors determine how much weight you can carry, what size weapons you can use, how far you can shoot with accuracy, how well you can speak, how quickly you can level up skills etc etc. Through the game as you gain levels you can upgrade all your troops with their various weapon skills, explosives/trap skills, lockpicking, sneaking, and just about anything else you could hope for in an elite military force. Perks are also gained every few levels, which can definitely be fun to sift through and once you pick one, can really help you out.

Pretty much it is in the player's hands to determine what each character can do, how well he can do it, and overall create a kick ass tactical squadron. It is best to have a well-rounded squadron, with at least one guy that is pretty good at electronics, one at explosives, one at lockpicking, and like any good combat game you don't want all six snipers or all six heavy-gunners. It's great fun to mix it up, use various combinations of weapons to make yourself a liquid force.

Overall it made some very good spins in my CD-ROM.

Fallout Tactics is similar to xcom and jagged alliance games.

Pros:
+Characters are very customizable
+great death animations
+fallout universe
+good number of different/interesting enemies
+good looking graphics
+Cool maps/terrain/settings
+Lots of characters
+Various species (Ghouls, Super mutants)
+Tons of different weapons, explosives, guns w/various ammo
+cool weapon effects( lasers and such)

Cons
-gameplay can be a bit difficult to get the hang of at first
-linear story
-annoying comments made by enemies during combat
-music is kind of annoyoing
-very little NPC interaction or "side quests"
-when characters are equiped with different guns the characters look like they carry something different, every smg is an MP-5, every rifle an M-16( a shotgun looks like an M-16, for example)

Better than Fallout

I know many folks will disagree with that statement, but I had MUCH more fun playing this game than Fallout 1 and 2. The original Fallouts were too bogged down in dialog and role playing. I would quit playing Fallout at night and forget where I was when I started the next day. The journals were horrible and it took me days of playing to continue with the plot. Tactics, however, caters more to my tastes for action and tactical maneuvering. If you like the in-depth role playing and storyline, you'll probably like Fallout 1 and 2 better.

The option to switch back and forth between real time and turn based combat is awesome. I've played it both ways. This mixes a military-type game with a Balder's Gate-type RPG very well. Great job and I hope to see more of the like in the future!

Tactics in the Fallout World...

Guys and gals, please, remember that the box says 'Fallout TACTICS,' not 'Fallout 3.' If you take into account that this is a strategy game in the Fallout world, this game is incredible, with reasonable replay value. Now, I played Fallout and Fallout 2 three and two times each [respectively], back-to-back. Tactics I managed two, then had to wait a while. Incredible game, as long as you realize that it is not one of the Fallout RPGs; rather, it is a new branch in the series, and, personally, I am very fond of it. If you want to criticize something, do the console Fallout BOS.

Tactical side of the Fallout series

Of the three Fallout games, this has to be the best. You have direct control over all characters in your group(squad) and even thier atts, skills, and perks. Thier is no story as in the others which are enjoyable in thier own right, but the micromanagement and control are what you want in a game. You start out with two other members(who may or may not compliment your main character's skills and abilities) but you can control them and give complicated manuevers in real time or turn based time which ever preferred. The piloting skill is rarely used in combat and thier are others who can give you thier services as a driver, but I like driving in an RP sense, so my PC has it tagged. Speech has no place in a game about war and fighting and Charisma takes on a more important role, team performance. This game is much harder than the previous two(in real time mode) and you must use quick thinking and position/planned attack manuvers executed imediately. Some of the bugs in previous versions(1.0) such as the language filter filtering even when not turned on have been removed and now the bull-$%#@ flies as does the blood.
