Loved Fallout 2, Sorry I wasted my money on this one.

I came to this game as a big fan of both Fallout 2 and squad based tactical games, so I was really expecting to love it. Unfortunately the game has some huge problems that make it a dull playing experience.

#1. The computer controlled oponents are absolutely moronic, to the extent that they can be defeated with little trouble once you get the hang of it. For example, in turn based mode oponents will not react to your presence unless they can see you ON THEIR TURN. This means that you can endlessly pop up from behind cover, shoot them, and pop back down, and they won't do a thing about it. They won't shoot back at you, they won't move to line up a shot on you, they won't take cover and make you come to them. They'll just stand there and take it. They also won't react to the fact that their comerades are being loudly butchered with shotguns just around the corner a few feet away. This means that every fight tends to be a slow process of advancing to a covered position, shooting up the enemy, and then repeating as necessary, all without exposing your units to any real danger. Given that there are already other squad based games out there with better AI's, (Shadow Watch is a good example), there's really no reason for this.

2. The world building just isn't that interesting this time around. Fallout 2 had a number of memorable locations and NPC's, and really inspired a certain sense of wonder in its players. This game inspires a sense of monotony. The missions all seem identical: move through a series of ruins, shooting up a variety of bad guys that look different but all act exactly the same. -- It's interesting to note that both human raiders and giant cockroaches have exactly the same behavior in this game.

3. Overall, a lot less thought seems to have been put into all the design elements of the game. Random encounters, for example, take place on such a huge grid that you sometimes can't even find the bad guys!

Like I said, I really wanted to like this game, but it's about as boring as watching grass grow. I would strongly recommend that anyone who is even considering buying this game first purchase Fallout 2, Shadow Watch, Fallout 1, and any of the X-COM games (they're all pretty similar), in that order. After that, try reading a book or something while you wait for a better software title to come out.

This game is Horribly un-fun

Hmmm The game pales in comparison with the two before it.It doesnt contain the same feeling, and joy I had playing fallout 1 and 2.One of the major problems was that you couldnt interact with other npc's like you could in the first two.IT added a sense of reality when choosing what to say could mean life or death. Also, the graphics in the first 2 added something to the game, there was no need to make it look prettier in fallout tactics,it just took away from the feeling.I couldnt stand the new non turn based play, although you could change it to turn based, there was no need for a new wat to play.MY suggestions for a new fallout game that would actually be good.Make the same game as the two originals and add more weapons, creatures, new places, and a new plot. The only thing I thought was worth buying about fallout tactics were the vehicles, otherwise it was pure crap.Dont waste your money.

Interplay never heard of Quality Control.

After waiting forever for something to follow Fallout 2, Interplay has dumped this game upon us. Fallout Tactics is full of bugs and serious playability issues that have ruined the potential of this game. The patches may fix some of this, but I doubt they will even come close to fixing all.

Don't waste your money on this game.

If it were possible to give -60 stars,I would

If you happen to think that the Fallout games (1&2, that is) were GOOD, then you'll join me in thinking this game is horrible and shouldn't have been given the Fallout name. This game probably delayed FO3, as well as giving Interplay the idea that it doesn't need BlackIsle to sell the Fallout name(check out the FOT box, do you see the BlackIsle Logo anywhere?? HMM?)

80% of this game's sales were do to the hard work of the BlackIsle team for the first two games, and they were just cast aside for the SPECIAL system they made, as well as the genre they helped define. If they deliberately cancelled work on this project with Interplay, could you blame them? It has 0 story. NONE. Zip. Cero. Nada.

I am sorry this geme even exists, and even sorrier that I bought it without even checking for the BI logo. I support BI in all its games, but I hope it stops all this D&D BS and gets back to the basics. What made BlackIsle? Fallout

Beware...

Seems Interplay shipped this puppy bad files on some cd's so many people out there cannot play the game once it is installed. Graphic (inventory, backgounds) do not show up, makeing the game (ahem) somewhat unplayable. As usual with a new game, it is wise to wait a few monts/patches before purchasing unless you enjoy paying to work as a beta tester.

Fallout Tacticts - Don't Bother

I bought this game three days ago and I haven't seen anything except the install screen about fifty bazillion times. I've tried everything I can to get it to run on two different computers. This thing is way to buggy to bother buying. Spend your money on something else!!!

Not worth the money, IMO

I've been a big fan of the Fallout series since it's inception. Fallout: Tactics is the only title in this series I haven't enjoyed playing. To be fair, it wasn't intended as a role-playing game and so the NPC's and settings aren't as complex and detailed as they were in the first two games of this title. In addition, I am currently lacking an internet connection and so have been unable to play it online (which is how it was designed to be played). It may be fantastic when you can play others online but it certainly sucks from a single-player standpoint. The whole game is based on the combat system used in the Fallout series which had some major drawbacks but which they have tweaked enough here to make it playable (the choice of three combat options: team turn-based, individual-turn based and real-time was a real help). However, the NPC's are flat and boring, the AI is fairly stupid unless you set the game to the higher difficulty levels and the setting is rather hum-drum. In fact, I didn't even play past the first mission as I really didn't care who won. This game, although it visually resembles FAI and FAII, really isn't set in the same universe. So it boils down to this: this game is (probably) worthwhile if your favorite part of the earlier releases in this series was fighting or you want a fairly solid, multi-player squad shooter. Otherwise, don't bother.

Not bad, not great

First off, I'd like to say that I honestly do like this game and I think it was worth my money. I have encountered a few bugs, but nothing that would make me fling this back to the store, but I know how games can be (especially from Interplay), so I pity those who experience more severe problems. I like the semi real time mode the best. I think it's the best way to go from now on in the Fallout series. But if that's not your thing, you can go back to the classic Fallout mode, or even turn based squad mode (from the description, it sounds like X-COM, though I haven't actually tried it). Yes, enemy AI can be pretty dumb. If you just lie still for a while, a lot of times the enemy will just merrily go back to their little patrol path, begging to be shot down. But hey, enemies weren't terribly bright in the previous Fallouts, either. And yes, they do seem to have awful hearing problems in regard to full automatic gunshots. Story's a bit dry to me, from what I've seen so far. Maybe it'll kick up a notch later on, but the previous Fallouts grabbed me from the getgo. Not this one. Also, I wish there was a bit more flexibility in the missions. While there are various shades of success in each mission, you're not allowed to fail. It's either win or lose and losing means the end of the game, even if you live. That, I don't like. That said, I do enjoy the game. I like the huge variety of weapons, the fact that I can actually sneak up on a guy and can actually take him out with one well placed gunshot (there's something deeply satisfying in getting close behind to a prone raider and blasting him with a double barrel, but that's just me). The combat is great. There are all sorts of options to deal with the various situations thrown your way. Do you sneak in behind your enemy and gut him with your knife? Do you just rush up, guns blazing? Do you snipe from afar? Do you toss grenades over the cover the enemy's behind? Should you crawl away from enemy fire or just run for it? The flexibility in combat is unsurpassed. Basically it boils down to whether you like a good yarn or a good round of war. For a good yarn, play the previous Fallouts. For a good strategic fight, this could be good for a few late nights.

Not exciting

I played both Fallout 1 and 2, and although I knew that fallout tactics would be different, I don't really like it that much: I wasn't really excited while playing, I was bored by the plot, and I think money I spent for this game are not worth it.

Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!

Don't get me wrong this game is awesome, and fun, but the amount of bugs in this game makes it unbearable to play at times and extremely easy, and what really stinks is that after two patches it is still filled with bugs. All I can say is save often becuase the game will crash on you multiple times.
