Asheron's Call 1 was my first MMORPG and as such it will probably always have a special place in my heart. I think this is true of many first games I have played in a genre. Doom, WarCraft II, and Super Mario Brothers (for NES) all hold similar positions.

At the same time AC1 has many things that led me to leave it for AC2. Unfortunately I found AC2 even more disappointing. One of my main issues with AC1 was how far behind I was.

I had heard of graphical MUDs back in the days I played real MUDs. At the time however they were very unimpressive. I ignored the genre until a friend of mine asked me to help make a patent relating to MMORPGs. As research I got a copy of my first MMORPG, AC1.

Back in my MUD days nobody cared what sex a character was. In fact many of the MUDs I played had three sex possibilities, male, female, and neuter. As a Joan of Arc fan I often prefer female characters. So when I joined AC1 I played on Morningthaw as Coventry Joan.

Coventry Joan was a spec UA, run, healing. At the time, I had no clue what they were but had read somewhere those skills would be useful. I got to level 35 with this character. Many times I had been told I should re-roll because it was a badly designed character, which was true.

After getting to about level 15 my wife started playing, on the same account, on HarvestGain. It was quickly found we couldn't share the account if we both wanted to play so I bought a new account, and a new computer. Great excuse for a computer btw. I bid farewell to my MT friends (Clan Wartorn) so I could join my wife's server. One of the things that bothered me about playing on that server was that most people thought I was a woman IRL, including my monarch. Instead of correcting them and at the same time humiliating them I was glad to move on to another server to play a male character.

In HarvestGain I quickly met new friends like Jocasta. As I got up in levels I wanted more and more to take part in PK. What I found was that PK on white servers was very unbalanced. Really, the only people who I could fight would almost always mop the floor with me even with my improved character design (4 school mage w/ mana C. spec) because only really high players went red.

Another thing that always bothered me about AC1 is the exploiting. Around the time I left it was at it's peak with combat macros, Insta-OG plug-ins, and XP chains. Also I had such a late start there was no possible way I could build a powerful character that could compete. So when AC2 came out I was very relived to not only get into a PK server but to get into a server from it's very beginning.

When AC2 let me down I did consider returning but because of all the reasons I had left plus the things that pampered me in AC2, like better graphics and actual music, I could not. All in all though it is the best MMORPG I have ever played.

I give it an 8 out of 10.

For over a year now we have taken the portal to Dereth, a virtual world and MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) like no other. We have experienced stunning vistas, miles of contiguous landscape that you can walk through and explore on your own, at your peril, or amongst a group of friends. These you no doubt will make along the way. There is safety in numbers you know. The trips have become more frequent now as the pursuit for knowledge and the thirst for experience in this vast world increases.

You can choose your race and personalize your player and become one of many different disciplines. You can be a Swashbuckler, Wayfarer, Archer, and Magician among others. The experience you earn as you slay beasts and complete quests will contribute to your characters growth and stature in Dereth. Perhaps you will found a great Monarchy or a feared Clan or contribute to a fellowship as you search for the ultimate beasts to slay.

The story changes monthly and the world is renewed again. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Changing events, new challenges, and quests with surprises along the way.

You don't need an overly fancy computer to run this game as you do with the newer games and being an older game you can be sure that the bugginess is low. This along with the friendly people you meet along the way adds to its playability. Combine this with a low monthly game fee and awesome support and you can keep your eye on the fun instead of technical issues.

This game doesn't disappoint. However, there is a danger that an addiction may form and that you will begin to slowly loose touch with the real world ...

Different from other MMORPG's

I've had the opportunity to play a good percentage of what is on the market today in this genre... EQ, DAoC, AO, E&B, even beta tested quite a few more of them. ACDM is the ONLY game I come back to when the others fail to deliver. I'm sure most of you have heard of AC at one point or another. Its been around for a while, yes. It's older, more established, yes. The graphics aren't so hot... well, not by AO's standards but they aren't as bad as you might think... and they may just suprise us one day with a graphics update(Though they are STILL better than EQ).
Most of you looking through the MMORPGs are familiar with the genre... its ups AND downs. What ACDM offers that NO OTHER game consistently offers breaks down to this; You build your skills as you go... YOU define how good your character becomes... NOT the game!

Sure, other games allow you to raise some skills, get some loot, wear armor that either degrades or needs to be rebought as you level, etc...

ACDM goes one step further... you can adjust the proficiency of anything from run speed, to lockpick skill. Not limited by your level, or your characters lineage... only limited by how much experience you put into it. You can also readjust your skills. Untraining one, specializing another, you can even change your inherent skills (i.e. strength, coordination, focus) AFTER playing and finding what works for your character. While there are a select few weapons and armor that have wield or wear level requirements, most are only skill requirements to activate bonus spells, NOT to use it entirely as other games typically do. Loot generated armor and weapons are almost always capable of being modified by the player (permanently... not a degrading bonus) to some degree... by either tinkering to enhance damage, up your armor level, reduce burden, or even adding permanent enchantments to items.

Between game stability, player community, player housing, allegiances, quests, soloability, fellowship hunting (share experience with your hunt mates), item variety, critter chess, PvP AND non PvP, character customization... ACDM gets an A from me. You are only limited by how much YOU put into your character.

Only one reason for not giving it an A+...
No new expansion pack lately... I hope for one soon... most of us in Dereth do, it just adds to the flavor, and hopefully the graphics a smidge.

If ya get in, make sure and say howdy :)

Every time I think I get out, they pull me back in...

I started playing AC from beta and left it for a bit. AC:DM brought me back. Having tried other online games, I have to say that Turbine has really scored with this one. Also, it seems they intend on breathing new life into this game by updating the server hardware which will hopefully allow them to do more exciting things. Right now, the game is in the calm before the storm as the storyline is evolving and a new menace seems to be coming. But if you're not into that, there's always fishing.

The most fun on the net that I have found

My husband got me into the game over a year ago and she has played since beta on different servers.......I have never been one for the action packed role playing games.....this one changes every month by adding new stuff and is constantly changeing........grafics are great......they could be like AC2 but AC2 isnt as fun as this version......all my friends have come back to AC after trying AC2 (if that tells you anything)......I recommend this game to all for the fact that just as you get bored at the end of the month ........it changes!

The Best Game in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The game is the best you can ever find. it is a ever lasting game.you get to buy your own house. have patrons and vassals. kill monsters and people (if you are PK) go any where you want. you can pick what kind of char you want to be. Like Bow sword axe mage crossbow mace UA dagger staff. the only bad thing about it is that you have to pay [money each] month. other than that the Game it the best.

This game was great a year into it's release date but playing the game these days you'll be lucky to run into any real people playing the game. You see most of the characters you run into the game now are BOTS. What this means is you're basically paying a $10 monthly fee to play online but play a single player game.

This is currently the only online Single player game out there because of the unwillingness of microsoft to take any action against the exploiters, bot owners and cheaters. So what you have is an all out hack fest to see who can create the best artificial intelligence.

If you like bots, exploits, cheats and hacks you'll love Asheron's Cheat.

Heed the cheat today!
