Great game but with some drawbacks

Asheron's Call is a great game. It is very addictive, and offers a variety of gameplay (magic casting, solo or group hunting, archery, melee fighting.....). I have played AC well over a year now and have had tons of fun in Dereth.

Pros:

1) Dereth offers a diverse geography and there is MUCH to discover. There is a large variety of lore and quests to go on.

2) Experience system; in my opinion is better than some of the other game. Experience is easier to obtain and level comes quicker than most other games.

3) Large variety of unique and intresting monsters to engage in combat.

4) Easy to learn and master, Their is not a complex rule system and controls are basic and well planned. Players will feel at home within a few hours of play.

Cons:

1) Unbalenced power. AC leans much more towards mages, rather than a balence. Most players will find the new island in ACDM is geared toward the mage community. Instead of a good blend of strengths and weaknesses, mages seem to far surpass melee characters in power.

2) Housing. Housing promised in ACDM was a joke. The demand is nearly three times the supply. Turbine's theory of releasing only a few houses at random times has only lead to more problems. Many people simply camp housing lots for days even weeks to get a chance to get a house.

3) Melee weapons. As I stated earlier, melees are not nearly as strong as mages in AC. Some of the weapons skills themselves are not worth even looking at and need MUCH work. In my opinion, swords, daggers, staffs, and Unarmed combat weapons rule Dereth. Many of the other skills (Thrown weapons, Axe, spear, mace) need a LOT of work.

Overall, I would give AC a great rating as it has been an outstanding game, with only a few flaws.

AC is a few years old now, and thriving more than ever. This is not another bubble in the MMORPG market. AC is the real deal. It has been hugely praised by critics and is enjoyed by many hundreds of thousands of players worldwide. It has a much more flexible character creation system than its competitors. AC (and AC2) is still the ONLY game to get FREE monthly updates! Yes you don't need to buy a yearly expansion, you get a free game update every month for your $... (US). Enjoy new monsters, new wealth, new places to explore, new epic quests, EVERY month! This dynamic game features excellent monarchy and fellowship systems, allowing you to make friends easily. Should you prefer to play solo, there are no limits placed on you. AC's 3D graphics still look very nice, and are often updated. It is also possible to play without broadband internet or a 3D card(optionally). Turbine, the developer has a very open relationship with players, allowing your opinion to be heard. I have tried all the rest, I'm sticking with the BEST. AC is the BEST MMORPG to date!
Won't you join us in Dereth?

AC & AC Dark Majesty is the best game i have EVER Played

I have been playing AC & then AC Dark Majesty for 4 years now. I am completely hooked and am ALWAYS in complete amazement on how the developers create this World of "Dereth". The development of the player creations, player levels and 'Growing' in every aspect of your character person as you gain experience (XP) points, creatures (their levels) the towns, the housing (I have my own Cottage with furniture and storage), the mysteries to unfold, the allegiance monarchy's, weapons and weapon developments, the magic schools, spells and levels, trading, chatting, etc etc!! Is by far the most amazing creation I have ever seen. My son who is 7 has literally 148 games and none compare to the complexity and intelligence that Microsoft/Turbine developers have created with AC Dark Majesty. I HIGHLY recommend it...be prepared to be hooked for life and make alot of new friends when you join AC DM. It's not for the simple minded player though...alot of adults play this because of it's sophistication and complexity. But if a kid wants to play then they can play also they just may need a little here and there help if under the age of about 13 or so.
GET THIS IT IS WORTH MORE THAN THIS PRICE !!

Asheron's Call is a PC based, on-line computer game in the Baldar's Gate/Dungeons & Dragons genre'. Characters move up in level based upon experience -- gaining increased abilities as they kill monsters or turn in certain items. There are also lots of weapons, magic items and armor you can gain or improve through questing and crafting. The complexity of the crafting and combat aspects of the game is interesting and complex enough to keep you engaged over a fairly long time.

The game has not been generally available via retail sale since around the December 2002 release of Asheron's Call 2. However, Asheron's Call remains popular -- still more popular than Asheron's Call 2 -- although not as popular as some of the larger on-line games such as Everquest. Games copies are available through Amazon.com & Ebay, but are not generally at the local computer game store, unless they carry discontinued or second-hand games. As with all multiplayer massive online realtime games (MMORG) Asheron's Call has its share of fan sites where you can follow discussions about different aspects of the game, read quest write ups, complain about what you would like to see changed or just socialize. The recent test by Turbine/MicroSoft of a new game server make many players hopeful that this on-line game will continue on for years to come.

There are seven server/worlds, all of which are identical except for the players that inhabit them. One of the worlds is dedicated strictly for player killers, those players that chose to be able kill or be killed other players. Most players stick to only one server since it takes time to advance your character through various levels.

Weapons and fighting abilities can be lumped into three categories, melee' such as sword, mace, axe; missile weapons such as bow, crossbow and hand thrown weapons; and magic, which is broken into 4 schools of magic, each of which is trained independently.

The ways in which you chose to create your character and the way in which you train different skills and apply the experience that you gain makes customization of your character a big part of the game. Recent changes to the game make the skills and attributes for your character much more changable and flexible.

Changes to the game are introduced each month. The monthly changes are eagerly awaited by most players. Many players run around the world after a new "patch", hoping to be one of the first to find a new monster or new quest.

Most players organize into monarchies that help each other with game information, and to help each other gain more powerful weapons, magic spells and armor. Many monarchies are also places to socialize as well.

I've enjoyed playing this game for over a year. Many have played the game for 3-4 years since it was first available for beta testing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Still The Best

I've been playing AC off and on for nearly two years now. I routinely leave for a few months but am always drawn back simply because Turbine makes it new and exciting every month. There are many things wrong with AC but no more so than any other online RPG.

Pro's:

1) Customizability - Your character is unique. You choose eyes/forehead, nose, mouth/chin sections of your face. You choose hair length (or none at all). And, of course, you can have them wear any type of clothing or armor you want. All this leads to your character looking different from any other character. Moreso than any other online RPG, you can recognize someone exclusively by the way they look.

You can also train or specialize your character however you please. You are not restricted by anything but your imagination. Want a healing mage who can swing a sword and pick locks? Sure thing. How about a warrior who can unleash a lightning bolt? Go for it.

2) Patron System - Since you tend to solo a lot in this game, it really needed some kind of way to get people to interact. By becoming a Patron or Vassal, it's very easy and beneficial to meet people.

3) Choice between solo and group play - Many of us don't have time to spend getting a group together just to go out and lose everyone and not get anything done. Sometimes you just want to jump in and battle a vicious olthoi or a lumbering tusker and then log out feeling that you've accomplished something. This game allows you to do that.

4) Unique and changing monsters and story - Completely different and orginal is the world of Dereth. Every month there is a free patch that adds monsters, items, story line, etc. This keeps the game fresh and new.

Cons:

1) Boring hack and slash is the same as always. Nothing has really improved upon this type of experience system. If you power level too much, you will get burnt out very quickly. The people are what make online games fun so be sure to sprinkle some downtime with friends in-between your power leveling.

2) Housing? Only for a few. There should have been a small room available to everyone who wants it. Then offer the houses rarely like they do now. Currently, less than 10% of the population has housing. That's sad.

3) Too much power in magic. In order to battle most things, you need magic. At high levels, a monster with magic will destroy a pure melee character easily. There is no defense for a character against magic.

4) Although you can make your characters skillset exclusively unique, you are gimping yourself to do it. There are only a few "templates" that allow you to do battle with the highest level monsters. Don't get me wrong, even if you don't have the best template, you can fight these monsters but you will have to be a much, much higher level to do so.

In conclusion, it's still the best online RPG out there for my money. This pack makes it better and it's a fantastic value.

Great Game with 3 drawbacks

Pros: This game is the COOLEST online RPG ever made, and the expansion makes it better. For those of you who already have AC, this is worth the cost. If you buy a house u will no longer have any problem switching items from character to character. Plus, only people u put on your guest list will be allowed into your house. Also, AC can get pretty boring once u have finished all the quests. This game has a whole new variety of quests and monsters.
cons: this game is way too addictive. Time goes by very fast when u are playing.
There is sometimes downtime when u r not able able to play
THE WORST DRAWBACK OF ALL IS LAG. Lag is when u r not able to move in the game, due to too many people playing. If u r lagging in town, sometimes u will get kiked off. If u r hunting and u begin to lag, you can expect to be hunting for your corpse for the next 30 minutes or so.

Very fun and addictive, but still has problems.

A note for new players: The Asheron's Call Dark Majesty expansion pack includes both the DM expansion and the original Asheron's Call, so there is no need to buy both. You only need to buy this expansion pack and you're all set.

There's no doubt that Asheron's Call is a fun, addictive, sometimes even awe-inspiring game. There are times when you just can't help stopping to watch the moon rise over the ocean or even stopping to admire another player's suit of matching Celdon armor. The Dark Majesty expansion has added many new features that have long been requested by the players: the ability to purchase houses, a new landmass to explore, a quest for an additional skill credit, quests for items that are both fun and useful (i.e. new mattekar robes), quests for experience points (including an Olthoi pincher that grants Three Million experience points), and the quest to defeat the Olthoi Queen. The amount of detail on some of the new objects is wonderful. The new feathered Siraluun dress is lovely and functional (even the men are wearing them), and the hollow spear is one of the nicest-looking weapons in the game. This expansion pack, together with the original AC, should have rated five stars, but it falls short for a few reasons.

1. Microsoft/The Zone. Simply put: poor customer service.

2. The new landmass, Marae Lassel, is too small. It's quite crowded there because, overall, the quests and items located on Marae Lassel are more lucrative than those found in other parts of Dereth. As you move from one area of Marae to another, the increase in danger is sudden. A few steps away from relatively low-level creatures like Timber Siraluuns are higher-level nightmares like Chaos Wisps and Virindi Executors. The lag on Marae is worse than it is in other parts of Dereth.

3. Housing. Many players are upset and frustrated because, at present, there are not nearly enough houses to meet demand. Obviously no one wants to see Dereth overrun with houses, but it's unfortunate that there aren't some sort of apartment complexes or something that could house a large number of players in a relatively small area.

4. Too little melee-oriented content. As with much of the rest of Dereth, Marae Lassel is mostly geared toward mages or archers/melees with a high degree of magic skill. A few creatures on Marae, like Armored Tuskers and Carenzi, are fine for melee players, but the majority of the creatures are still mage-oriented. The Kithless Siraluun, for example, has such a high regeneration rate that it regains health almost as fast as a melee can deal out damage.

Ahseron's Call is still a terrific game and one of the best, if not the best, MMORPGs on the market. With a little work, it could be almost perfect.

Better than ever

ACDM hasn't been reviewed in a while, so here's the updates on where this fantastic game stands now. Housing has become a lot more attainable since the introduction of apartments. At this point in time, there are still apartments available on many servers. {Apartments provide a 1-room space with a few hooks for hanging items and one chest for storage.}

Monthly updates now include graphics updates in many cases, so while the graphics may not be up to par with some games, there is an effort to update them. But graphics aren't everything as many former AC2 players will tell you. The gameplay is still wonderful and more and more features are added every few months to enhance gameplay, such as spellbook sorting, new weapons, better damage mods, better armor, tinkering and tons of melee, missle and mana bonuses. They've done a lot of balancing for classtypes and unlike many MMPORPG's, Asheron's Call is geared to EVERY level of character and every type of player {solo fighters, fellowships, PvP, PvM, questers and even tradeskill characters}.

There's so much going on in this game, I can't begin to cover it all in less than 1000 words. Asheron's Call Dark Majesty is better now than it ever was. There's a great mix of old and new players and a ton of different communities in and outside the game for constant up-to-the-minute information on everything from the lore in game to new and future updates and quests. If you're looking for a game that is truely engaging and will keep you hooked, this is it. Take it from someone who's been playing it avidly for over a year, AC is worth every penny {which you'll get back anyway, thanks to the rebate}! Come on in, Dereth is waiting!

Wow

ACDM > ALL GAMES. This sums it all up. Ive played DiabloII, Warcraft I,II,III, Starcraft, had DAoC and Everquest......yet nothing can compare. The people, places, monsters, quests, items, support, towns, everything. It could not be better. The best part is its 24 hours, so when you log off lets say in Darktide (Player Killer Server) You could log out all by yourself and when you log in have a PK right next to you! Its great, the adrenaline of your first kill, and heartache of the VP (Vitea Points which u get when you die) and the sorrow of getting screwed in your first trade. All of these you'll experience and through the bad and good times you'll always come back to Dereth. It is handsdown the best game for the PC.

So grab your credit card and order it now. You cant buy it at stores anymore because Turbine wants you to play AC2 (WHICH [is bad]!!!!!) dont buy it, buy ACDM, the only bad thing about AC is that youll get addicted and will probablly lose track of the real world, but its cool, because its great. 1000 words cannot describe the fun of this game so ill end it here, just buy it whats [item price] for a lifetime of fun?

-Sinister (Say hey if ur in darktide :D)

AC is not like those other MMORPGs, you won't beat AC in one week.

Regardless of if you are exploring the ruins of an ancient Empyrean armory, or fighting off waves of the mysterious Virindi, AC has something for everyone.

If you enjoy exploring, taking down gigantic monsters several times your size, or even fighting others, this game is perfect for you. With countless pages of lore (that is optional to read - if you don't like reading you can just skip it all), and with monthly PATCHES CONSTANTLY ADDING HOURS AND HOURS OF CONTENT, there is NO END to the adventure.
