Would've given the game a 3 but...

I like to be scared. From all I've heard about this game I knew I was going to be in for a good fright. Unfortunately, there were some annoyances to this game that completely ruined it for me. Just when you are getting into the game you enter a door and the gameplay stops to load data. Not a big deal but it happens more frequently than you would think. I simply could not get into the game because of this. The horror factor was not really there for me either. While some of the scenes, characters and monsters were somewhat creepy I was never scared. Plus just when you might think you are getting scared you get the dreaded "Loading" screen which just kills the moment. It took a while for me to get used to the controls. I reassigned the default configuration of spells and weapons to the keyboard. Also, you can't auto-reload your pistol which can be a nuisance when trying to kill a monster that is in your face. The developers of the game should've come up with a better Save Game system. It's horrible. The worst part of the game for me was the random crashes that happened on a somewhat frequent basis. I have an AMD 850 with 516K RAM and an ATI RADEON 7500 with 64 Megs.

I was extremely dissapointed with the final encounter with the Undying King. I didn't even know that I killed the thing until I got the "Loading" screen. My computer crashed about 1 minute into the final scene so I do not know exactly what happened.

So, why did I give the game a 4? Because the game is truly beautiful to look at and a delight to hear. That in itself was worth the frustration that I experienced either due to a crash or the constant "Loading" screen. In my opinion the gameplay is typical of a FPS but the textures and environments are awesome. The score was also top notch and blended very well with the gameplay. I think that the most scared I got during the game was due to some of the very eerie sound effects as I walked around the mansion.

Very good FPS game

I just finished going through the game for the first time, and I have to say I was totally impressed. Everything I'd read about it is true. Anyone who buys this game is sure getting a lot for their money, even without a multi-player mode.

I'd like to make a couple points. First of all, the only really bad things I have to talk about are the long load times. I can understand them because there's so much audio and visual detail in the game, but it does get frustrating when a level reloads as you're turning around in a hallway.

Second, I've played one of the Star Trek Voyager FPS games, and my experience from that game taught me that I should download a game guide to get through Undying. I didn't use the cheat codes but the game is so complex that it made things much easier. You can defintely get lost or choose the wrong weapon or spell when you're being chased by something that's trying to kill you. If you think using a guide is cheating, you can always use a higher difficulty level. Remember, the guide says what you should do, but you still have to do it. That isn't always easy because you don't have much time to kill the bosses before they come after you again.

Also, the guides aren't always completely clear, so there is a good deal of improvising. They say where all of the ammunition, spells, and health packs are, but it sometimes isn't possible to get or use them.

In short, I'd recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the genre, but be prepared for blood. Seeing you're footprints in blood after you kill something is an especially nice touch.

How did I miss this one!!

Wow! How did I miss this game when it came out? I purchased it on a whim recently and found one of the best realized, most entertaining and scariest shooters I've ever played. The idea of placing it in 1920's Ireland is brilliant. It oozes with atmosphere, and the time period combines the best of both the 19th and early 20th centuries (i.e. 19th century atmosphere with somewhat modern 20th century weapons -- at least the ones that aren't magical). The music, graphics, pacing, lighting, level design and "enemies" (both human and other) are right on. There is even an incredibly well realized magical city to visit and eventually subdue. This is one of the few games that has really scared me (the old adrenaline was really pumping). The most disappointing aspect is the ending (bad enough to warrant the loss of a star). The final "boss" or monster is so ridiculous it seems like almost an afterthought to the high quality shown in the rest of the game. Purchase it -- especially now when it's such an incredible value!

Enjoyable

Just wanted to say that I've been playing the game for a while now and I'm really enjoying it. I've read other reviews that bash the game for not having multiplayer, but the single-player experience is quite enjoyable. I don't really have much to add other than I disagree slightly with the Amazon.com review in that I haven't found the load times to be excessive. The level loads occur somewhat frequently and in places where you're not expecting them, but the load times themselves are not excessive...

Pros - this is a very good game for the First Person Shooter genre. I have played them all. Wheel of Time is my favorite FPS of all time so I have to compare all FPS to that. First of all, the Graphics are awsome. The weapons are easy to use, and the storyline is great. Good as a horror game. Gave me the feeling of going through the haunted mansion at Disneyland. Lots of creepies and the action is smooth and looks great.

Cons - this game does not have many, but one that I saw was the game is to linear. It won't let you explore as much as you would like. It sort of forces you where it wants you to go. I would have liked it if I could have explored the house more and picked up the pieces of the puzzle randomly. Other than that, this is a great game and I would reccomend it for anybody.

AWESOME !!!

I've played quite a few of these type of games and this is simply the best. With my feeble 400MHZ and TNT2 system it plays just GREAT. The graphics are gorgeous. I cannot find fault with any part of this game : is saves/loads fairly quickly, cutscenes are awesome, not talky like some games, the hellhounds are amazing AI impressive, sometimes they attack sometimes they just skulk, its everything I want in a hellhound, it's like they receive commands through the ether that you are not a party to. The music and voice..awesome. I really like the story, and the various books/scrolls one encounters, written very well..of course ! written by a master of the genre, Clive Barker. I'm still "experiencing" the game at the moment and I look with sadness to the day it must come to its conclusion...EA and CB WE WANT MORE ! PS It's not just placed in a haunted house, the locales are rich and teeming with all kinds of nasties, and one can use weapons and/or spells that make sense in their use ! HEAPS OF PRAISE

Dull Quake Clone...

They bill this game as being a horror/adventure story, but really it is just a lot of running around lost, shooting at bad guys, and forever running out of bullets. It is not more interesting or groundbreaking than Quake or Unreal and it is certainly not an adventure game. Don't waste your money- you've played this before.

As a technical side note, the game claims to be incompatible with 3dfx voodoo banshee. However, I have the Creative Voodoo card and it works great in high resolution and at high detail levels.

Clive Barkers Undying looks like it would be fun to play, but I'll never know because my computer uses Savage video driver. The two products simply will not get along.

Dead Review.

The premise of this game was nice. I expected more from Clive Barker. The direction of this story gets lost. I found the plot becoming weaker as the game progressed. The atmosphere was nice. The characters were too stiff. The game is pretty much straight forward. There's one spell which had a physical affect on me. When the screen turns into a purple haze to see and hear beyond normal senses, I found that my eyes became strained. I suffered eye damage from this game. Becareful.
