Refreshingly "atmospheric" but disappointing in the end

Take a great game engine and a master of horror, put them together along with some inspired sound-effects and graphics and you've got a hit, right? Right?
Maybe not. This game had lots going for it, but in the end neither the story nor the gameplay are strong enough to be worthy of the $$ you're considering plunking down on it.
The best part of the game are the in-game cinematics that do a great job of driving the story along and giving you a carrot to chase after (you get the stick, too). The weapons are pretty cool, and it's fun having spells. Unfortunately, you quickly realize that only one or two of the weapons are really worth developing your skills at, and most of the spells are not worth the time it takes to switch to them.

I give the developers kudos for an inventive UI and a good atmosphere, but in the end I think I would have enjoyed a shorter game with more excitement.

Most immersive game I've played

Having played lots of FPS, I can say that this game is GREAT. Truly immersive. I find myself just hanging out and looking at the beautiful environment. The level of detail on the exteriors and interiors is awesome, the monsters truly "Barker-esque" and powered by great AI and the storyline one of the strongest I've seen.
If you're looking for some Halloween chills&thrills, this game's for you!

Best bang for your buck.

What a great surprise! This game managed to totally slip under the radar of most gaming retail outlets. It doesn't cost $50+, you don't need a $250 video card to play it, and the story is well developed thanks to the imagination of Clive Barker.

It's an FPS-based game but the story and the atmosphere really serve well to support the structure of the game. Too often FPS games are shoot-em-ups for the sake of shoot-em-ups (Painkiller for one). Definitely one of the creepiest games I've played. Much more so than Doom III which prefers to go for the cheap shock ans surprise over tension building and a macabre sense of ruinous decadence.

The levels are well developed and there's lots of variety, from haunted houses to prehistoric villages to romanesque monasteries. Sure, the graphincs are old-school by 2004 standards but you forget this fact quickly once you immerse yourself.

I have to say it was one of the best games I've played all year, and at $10 for a used copy, how you gonna beat that? Before you shell out $50 for Doom or HL-2, donwload the demo and play it for yourself, I'm confident you'll be pleasantly surprised too.

One of the scariest games of the new millenum

Even if you're not a fan of Clive Barker, this game is still well worth playing. Its got a solid and very scary plot, and manages to avoid most of the survival horror cliches'. You start the game a Patrick Galaway, who is summoned by his old friend Jerimiah to investigate some strange goings on at his island manor.

The levels manage to convey a sense of connectedness without becoming repitious and boring, and there are enought variations in enemies to keep things interesting.

My only complants are
1) It takes a while to load levels (even from quickloads)
2) The last couple of bosses are repetitive, and drag the game down at the end.

Possibly the scariest game out there.

I am a big fan of the horror genre which includes movies, novels and the very few true horror video games. And no I am not talking about thrasher run around horror movies, I am talking about the true horror that keeps you on the edge of your seat and actually leaves you dreading to go to bed at night. So after finishing Clive Barker's the Undying I have to say I was very impressed. First of all the graphics were amazing for when the game came out. The sound effects along with the music added to the creepiness of the game which gave it an overall very creepy atmoshpere. Top that off with an amazing story with some awesome plot twists and you have an award winning game. I have beat the game about 5 or 6 times now and keep going back for more when the need arises. I don't think that there is any other horror game out there in my opinion that compares to this. I would truly like to see more horror computer games made in conjunction with Clive Barker. Surely that is a winning combination. Lets just hope that the Call of Cthulhu game coming out is worth the wait.

One of my all time favorite games

The story is a little convoluted but I don't recall playing a video game that wasn't. The graphics in this game are breath taking. The colour the shadow and ambience. I play this game every so often, like reading a favorite old book. Too bad they never made sequel.

Scared the bejeezus out of me

A great game. So atmospheric, so creepy. The music and sound effects are excellent and really create the atmosphere. I especially like the Monastery. No game has ever scared me like this one did. I literally used to feel the hairs standing up on the back of my neck playing this. My only gripe is the voice-acting in the cutscenes which is atrocious. Especially the guy trying to put on an Irish accent and failing miserably. But its easy to skip past those scenes so it doesnt detract. I wish games developers would team up with horror writers like Barker more often.

This is the game for anyone who does not just like to go "shoot em up" with no reason or storyline. I'm glad to see this game finally getting a little pub a year later as a "classic" and so forth. To me, this was the best 3d game I've ever played. I say this because it had an engrossing storyline, incredible graphics that are not just about the awesome effects, but also about sheer atmosphere. It's the kind of game where you are in horror after opening each door and peeking around every corner. You do this with an objective in mind, you are unfolding a mystery. The house is haunted, but for a reason, and you have to find out to make it end. It's just an amazing piece of work, from the drapes flowing in the wind, to the lightning in the sky, it's just perfect.

If you have a high end PC, ignore all the complaints about loading times and so forth. People who make this complaint clearly have low end or outdated equipment as I was running this on a laptop originally and did so with flying colors, though it was a very high end laptop.

One of the best games out there.

First off, I want to say that I am not an expert on first person shooters. I tend to go for the RPGs or simulation games but I gave this one a try for two reasons. One, I am a huge fan of horror movies and two, I kept seeing the outstanding reviews for this game on a multitude of gaming sites. So when I saw Clive Barker's name and read the reviews I decided to take a chance and I'm glad that I did.
The thing I love most about this game is simply the atmosphere. It's everything I imagined a creepy haunted house to be and more. And the sounds, whether it's howling (from the howlers), screams from the dying, the thunder and rain that is a constant throughout this game, or the music that blends in so well with the story, the sound sound quality is utterly amazing (and I have average speakers with a good sound card).
The second thing besides the sound is the graphics. I have played some games with top notch graphics and this game is right up there with the best. The dark, faintly sinister interior of the house, the flickering lights, the pale bleached skin of Lizbeth, and the blood pooling on the floor. Even the smokey haze of other spirits as they appear then disappear. It all drags you into the story and does not let go. And in case you're wondering, I have a 64mb Nvidia GeForce4 MX420 video card which works very well.
One word of caution though, if you play this game it is best to use a walkthrough especially when playing it for the first time. I printed out a complete walkthrough from Gamespot and got lost anyway, without it I would have missed tons of health packs and ammo. There are many doors and long hallways to pass through, not to mention the special items you must find and pick up along the way. Example: the priest key above the girder. Even with the guide I had a hard time finding that one.
Overall, I would have to say that this is one of the best games I have played in a long time.

Quite addicting.

If you want a serious challenge with a great story and alot of creatures jumping from all dark corners, then this is your game. The boss creatures in the game are very tough, especially the final one. The graphics were solid, the sounds were solid, and the game was solid. What kept this from being a truly awesome game was there was a little too much story telling. Seemed like every time you turned around, you had another cut scene. And most of the weapons weren't all that good and neither was the magic.
But one of the neat features was the Scrye spell. It let you see things that happened in the past. And when you used it while looking at some pictures they looked different. Very cool. You just have to see for yourself.
Overall, this was a solid game that had some creepy music to set you up for quite a few good scares. Gave me goose bumps the whole time I played it. Could have done better with the weapons and the spells, but still worth the money and the time. Good luck.
