Fun if you turn off the sound, textures, and music

AHHH! This game is fun, but I had trouble having fun when the whole time I was shaking with fear. All the enviroments are spooky and when a monster pops out at you, I doubt you won't scream. Doors open and close by themselves sometimes. The sound of the monster wherever it is, behind you, in front of you, above you, will REALLY make you scared. The gameplay is great with good AI. (some types of monsters are stupid while others will sneak up on you or hunt you down) It's the kind of game that grabs you and shakes you real hard, then slams you down onto your chair. Sooooo, If you like horror games or fps, this is the game for you.

Buy this game, it's worth it!

An awesome first person shooter with incredible atmosphere! This game is actually scary- more so than Resident Evil in my opinion. The weapon/spell system is unique and the story is good. The only flaw is the lack of online multiplayer, but the single player game is so long that you won't care. I would recommend this game to everyone. "Buy it now"

Barker Succeeds With First Game

Despite some of the shortcomings in the combat and difficulty balance, Undying is a classic video game that succeeds in immersing a player into a classic horror movie.

The story takes place during the 1920's in Ireland, where a debt is owed, and a family estate with a history of black magic practice wields the ghosts of a bitter sibling rivalry.

It's a viable story involving likeable, interesting characters, and pulls-off some of the scariest moments in the history of video games.

The Howlers come out of nowhere and their blows are felt as your screen develops a red glaze and your vision becomes disoriented for a moment after each hit.

Your weapon of choice is in your left hand and spells are cast in your right, which is odd at first but becomes comfortable enough. The interface is different, but well done and intuitive. You can also level-up your spell of choice, giving Undying a minor RPG touch.

The Unreal engine for the most part looks great and the it's the actual artwork of the designers that makes the graphics so impressive and immersive rather than the Unreal engine's capabilities alone. At times the sky textures are very ugly and "Doom-like" for such a new game. But the great character models, foreground textures and over-all level design make up for it big time. Make no mistake Undying is an impressive game visually, you won't be disappointed in that area.

The latter levels are a bit out of place but are fun regardless, and the boss battles involve patterns, that take a few times to get down, but are generally enjoyable as well.

The gameplay does have a bit of variety, requiring you to find someone or blow something up, or find an object, which takes some exploring and logical thought, making it more than just your typical FPS.

Finally Undying scared [...] me at times, the Howlers stuck with in my dreams at night while I played this game, and you know a game's done it's job when that happens.

The only complaint I have is that the game's difficulty settings are too far apart, but playing on Normal is a good way to go through the first time, it still can be challenging in various areas.

A very scary FPS

You better leave the lights on for this one kiddies. Clive barkers undying has excellent gameplay that makes you jump up on your seat, grab the mouse and scream as you curse obscenities at the foe your trying to kill. Though it does not have a very wide veriaty of weapons, the ones you get are very wicked.

Now the graphics are excellent, some of the best i have seen for a first person shooter in a while. The enemies are desighned very well to give you a extremelly scary feelind. And get some new pants ready becouse theres a lot of surprises that will scare the crud out of you.

For the story, it's slright but needs a little work. Very good ending that leaves things open for a sequal.

If you read this review i hope you use it to determin to buy the game or not so if you do, enjoy!

The Only PC Game That Made Me Jump Out of My Seat!

Not a fan of the horror genre, I've never read Clive Barker's books but I have to tell you that Undying gave me the same spooky feeling I had when I was a kid watching midnight horror movies. To fans of the horror scene, Cliver Barker is considered a "master of the macabre" and I'd say that the programmers of this game couldn't have given the author a better conversion to the PC.

From the great music and sound effects that set the mood to the constantly changing murky or gloomy settings, this game has an atmosphere to it that I haven't seen with many PC games. Even the gameplay has elements of fright. An example is the (grim reaper's) scythe as a weapon and the magic ability to foresee the future that turns everyday objects into bloody projections.

It seems that not many FPS (first-person shooter) games come up with original concepts these days but Undying has managed to invent a new concept for first-person shooters. Even better, the abilities of the character are configured in a control system that makes perfect sense. If you own a mouse with a scroll and more than 2 buttons, you won't need to use the keyboard much.

If you don't enjoy FPS games, you might want to give this one a try. A demo is available on various websites that you will give you a feel for the game. I hadn't given first-person shooters much attention in the last few years but Undying renewed my interest for these types of games. Duke Nuke 'Em, Rainbow 6, The Operative, Quake - some of the first-person shooters that set precedents for the market and I'd add Clive Barker's Undying on the same list. The entire horror concept of this game deserves mention as it does one of the best jobs in PC gaming history of projecting it to the audience.

Some of the negatives include: 1) no online multiplayer mode provided, 2) the game can be completed perhaps too quickly if you don't adjust it to a difficult level, and 3) while the horror scene impresses the heck out of you at the beginning it dies down near the end of the game.

(Disclaimer - The game says that the following 16MB video cards are not suggested for this game: 3dfx Voodoo BANSHEE cards, PowerVR Neon 250 cards, S3 Savage 2000 cards, SC Savage 4 cards, SIS 300 cards)

This is an excellent game!

I was a little unsure whether or not to buy undying, but I'm glad I did. Even though it's single player, it is one of my most played games because it's pure fun. I've beat it on every difficulty setting and still just love the story and the frightning atmosphere.

The weapons are fantastic, expecially the sythe that can slice body parts off in a few clean slashes. And with the other hand you can cast spells in case you need to reload your firearm, like the 3 skulls or lightning.

I would normally tell people to download the demo, but only play it to see some of the guns and spells because the demo has NO story in it and it not as scary as the full game.

the only bad thing I didn't like about it was the rain and snow. It gives you bad fps so I had to turn it off with a command.

Puzzles better than the action

Although I normally appreciate quite a bit of supernatural blood-letting in my gaming experience, I have to admit to using the God mode cheat on a lot of this game so I could explore some of the more interesting puzzles without getting slaughtered. This is a very fun, dark game and I would highly recommend it for anyone who has played American McGee's Alice or Half-Life or the like where you have a combination of puzzles to solve and enemies to kill. The medium and nightmare levels are seriously challenging, so be warned if you need some time to warm up with the 2-handed game controls - weapons on one side, spells and movement on the other. The visuals are stunning and the major enemies are suitably creepy and difficult to kill if you're not paying attention. I'm glad to see that there are some fan-authored levels available, as I'm not ready for this game to end.

Chilling to the bone!!!

It didn't take long after starting a new game of my own to realize the true genius behind this game. The audio system adds to the bone-chilling theme and the graphics are spectacularly detailed. I am a little partial to strategy games and if you are the same this is a must have game. I have yet to finish the game, but it doesn't take long after undertaking the journey as Patrick Galloway to grasp the depth and the mandatory mentality to succesfully complete Clive Barker's Undying. One other thing that makes this game unique and even more horrifying is that instead of the curse instead of the Covenant curse ending in the annihalation of the Covenant family is that it doesn't end there. It would seem to me that there is a much more sinister force at work and the game will only reveal pieces of the final solution until it is time for the final fight.

Very scary and fun to play

I can only think of one other game that scared me and that was the classic Phantasmagoria. The sound effects and foreboding atmosphere of this game make it fun to play. It is more than a shooter, in that it provides a creepy story. Some people do not like the linear play, but this is an adventure game and a horror story all in one, so I welcome the style. I have beaten this game once, but I intend to play again tonight (play this at night with all the lights off).

The reason I gave it only four stars is that initially the sound quality was very choppy or in some places non-existant, even though my sound card (Sound Blaster 128) satisfied all the requirements (it was DirectSound / DirectX 8.0 compatible and tested fine). I bought a newer Sound Blaster Live and it works fine, so your sound may be faulty even if you meet their requirements.

All in all, a great game.

horror shooter

This game tries to place a horror storyline into a first-person shooter. It works. Half-life gave me a little scare from time-to-time. Undying game me serious scares from time-to-time. You can actually use the right and left mouse buttons simultaneously: I used the Scythe of the Celt weapon and the shield spell as an awesome combination. I finished the game: unless you are in a hurry, you can finish the game with minimum help from a strategy guide. We're living in some exciting times now, as Undying is an example of beautiful and fun games to come. Good hunting.
