The game was very interesting with a lot of combat. The game is played on different worlds as you are trasported from one to another. I would not have gotten through this game if I didn't have Prima's Guide. It helped with both the various combat situations and room/world directions. Items had to be collected in a specific order or you would never complete a section. The biggest draw back to the game was the controls. Because you control both weapons & magic spells, you needed keyboard & mouse controls to cast spells & fire weapons. Some spells did not work at first. I found out that you had to use an alternate keys to cast certain spells & load or use different weapons. Overall the game had good graphics and an interesting story line. I would recommend this game to anyone that likes action games with many different type of foes.

4.5 stars. Man, do I want to give this game 5 stars! But...there are some problems. Can you say "crash?" When playing, most of the time I am scared and jumping out of my office chair. This is a really creepy game! But once in a while I go through a door and the dreaded "Loading" page pops up and I am wondering if I will have to go back to the "saved games" area to continue my adventure from there. To reduce my anxiety I save the game each and every time after a "Loading" page brought me back to the game. It is a pain, to be sure, but this game is worth it. There was a review here that was griping about saving a game and then the game sending him back to the very beginning of said location(s). There is a trick to saving the game at an exact moment and place. Push "Esc" and go to the "Load/Save" section and delete the previous saved game(make sure the entire page is empty), then save the game you are playing. Be sure to only have one saved game at a time because this is a seriously annoying glitch in the game frame. There is one last annoying factor in the game. It is that using any other spell besides "Scrye" is next to impossible because the locations are so incredibly dark that I had to use that spell almost constantly in most areas. Now for all the positives! There are great, eerie sound effects that gave me constant chills; and I had to remind myself that this is only a game. I was backing into corners frequently, rapidly looking left and right for attackers. You can save the game at any point, which is great, but be sure to remember to "delete" the previous saved game before saving the new one. I laughed at one point because I actually jumped from my chair at a loud crash of lightning. One area was so dark (be sure to have that "Scrye" spell handy), and I was so nervous about being attacked, that when the character's hand moved I thought I was being attacked. There was one awesome point in the game when I was running down a hallway toward a large mirror when from behind me, rising out of the floor, a demon reached out to attack me from behind! Ahhhh! What a fantastic moment! Oh...you're gonna love the shotgun! Be sure to save your "Health Packs," and be careful with that dynamite! If not for the monotony of "scrying" everywhere, the rare "Loading" crash, and the small nuisance of saving the game so often, this is an extremely satisfying and genuinely scary game. I kid you not. If they ever make a sequel without the bugs that inhibit the original from attaining greatness I will seek it out with fervor. This is an addicting, fun, chilling game. One last note: If you find yourself in a pitch-black catacomb at one point in the game with about ten animated skeleton warriors coming after you, do the smart thing...run for your life! Take it easy.

Great game....not for the squemish though!

This game was a pleasant surprise for me. I bought it in a combo package with "Alice" (a great game as well) and I didn't realize it was a first-person shooter in a horror story. A great combination for a game! The scenery is excellent, the creatures are nasty and come at you with everything they have, and the main enemies you confront are downright terrifying. Without giving too much away I found Lizbeth to be one nasty woman, someone you don't want to run into even in your worst nightmare. Playing it at night it certainly seemed like my younger days when I would get scared at something and left the light on in my room. A great game to play!

very underrated

I'm impressed! This game is HUGE and has tons of mood. You'll find yourself in places like on top of a roof in a thunderstorm, in the dungeons of a haunted mansion, in a pirate cove, in the past, in a cave next to a giant waterfall, and even in several alternate dimentions. The game has great graphincs and sound, although not cutting edge anymore. (I think it's an enhanced Unreal engine.) Author Clive Barker has injected a cool story and mood that really makes this game jump to life. It was worth the $50 when it first came out, and it's almost too good to be true when you can get it for $10. If you like 3D shooters and/or scary stories, you won't be disappointed.

The best game i'll never play again.

The whole time i was playing this, i was thinking "this could have been sooooo awesome".

and it is awesome... to watch. but when it comes to playing this, you get the sense that fighting the legions of hell in real life would be much less complicated than finding your way around this mess. the controls are pointlessly difficult. for all of your items (ammo, health, weaponry, tools) you have to search through a long list to find what you needed 5 seconds ago. all this while you're being bombarded by 8 monsters that just dropped down from the ceiling, or came out of the floor.
it would have been much easier to assign a key for each item.

the second, and probably most annoying thing about this game, is that almost every other door you walk through causes the game to load another "level". when you walk through these doors is when the game saves, and most of the time you can't go back. so, if you missed something out there, too bad. this is especially annoying when the Load screen starts at a seemingly arbitrary place.. an invisible barrier.. so that as you're exploring this new "room".. you're bound to step over the line again and have to wait on the Load screen, before stepping back over the line to get where you were trying to go in the first place.. (which, you guessed it.. causes another "loading" screen)

all this is tolerable at first. but the WHOLE GAME is like this.

It could have been the best game i've ever played, but all i can say now is "what were they THINKING?"

so, here's what i say.
buy it if its cheap. otherwise, buy Max Payne. it may not be as visually exciting, but its a heck of a lot more user friendly.. and its FUN!

the best!

Undying: Fun Dies Quickly

It is disturbing to me that so many respected reviewers are praising a first person shooter without Multiplayer with 9.0+ and 5 star scores. Undying is a fair entertainment product that uses the Unreal Engine. It is not a ground breaking program, nor important piece of gaming history. It is a fair game bacause it accomplishes to create a horrific and spooky atmosphere using sound and inspired level design. It is unimportant due to failure in almost every other department. The single player game can be finished quickly in a few days and replay value is zero, considering the linear scripted story, which is under-developed to say the least.

Unbelievable graphics

A couple of years ago I got hooked on the N64, and haven't played a PC game since. I saw the pre-reviews on this game, and decided to try PC games again. I ordered Undying and loaded it. I was very surprised as to how easily it loaded. That was one of the reasons that I stopped playing PC games.

After going through the setup and jumping right into the game the first thing that I noticed was the speed and level of detail of the 3D rendering. I have never seen anything like it. The weapons and enemy are smooth, and varied, and the sound is incredible. I have a PIII 1Gig with 256Meg Ram and a high end 32Meg graphics card.

Usually I prefer action games (ie Doom), and usually get bored with pure task oriented games, but they managed to combine the two very well, into a fairly solid story (still a bit much for me)with enough shooting to keep me interested.

I only have one complaint with the game, and that is I find the controls to be horrendous. Having been away from PC games for so long, I really hate having to hit the up arrow key and control to jump. This would be fine, if the game didn't require precision jumping. I really wish they had integrated a joystick into the game. I don't want to use the keyboard.

Other than that it is a very enjoyable game.
