Too much blood, not enough game play

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 4 / 17

This game was difficult to play because the character was hard to maneuver (you see through his eyes), the controls were not user friendly, and at the drop of a hat, monsters are ripping your head off. Yuck! There are no fun puzzles and clues to figure out, it is just a bunch of running around chasing "bad guys". This is ok for the blood thirsty teen-ager, but not for someone who genuinely loves a good thought inspiring interactive game. If you are like me, get "The Longest Journey". That was the best game I have ever played. This one is a waste of money.

They bill this game as being a horror/adventure story, but really it is just a lot of running around lost, shooting at bad guys, and forever running out of bullets. It is not more interesting or groundbreaking than Quake or Unreal and it is certainly not an adventure game. Don't waste your money- you've played this before.

As a technical side note, the game claims to be incompatible with 3dfx voodoo banshee. However, I have the Creative Voodoo card and it works great in high resolution and at high detail levels.

I'm sad to say that Undying does not live up to the hype. Compared to many of the games I've played lately (Alice, Blade Of Darkness, Vampire The Masquerade, Heavy Metal) on the same computer, its graphics are poor. I admit the enemies are high quality visuals, even though the final boss looks like a ridiculous Creature Feature reject. But the uninspiring backgrounds consist of blocky architecture and blurry details. The motionless 16 bit graphic skies with visible seams are inexcusable. Note to game developers: Put the Unreal engine to rest already.

Enough about the graphics, Deus Ex was no beauty queen but it was a darn good game. So let's talk about Undying's game play. It's completely linear, which you are constantly reminded of by all the doors that don't open and the inability to backtrack. You've walked into a room with 4 doors, only 1 of them opens...which way do you go??? Despite the obvious routes, the pace of the game is rather slow because every couple of minutes the screen turns black displaying the word "Loading" for five seconds. All objects (i.e. tables and chairs) in the game are static so your only interaction with the environment is shooting. The addition of casting spells is no new innovation, it simply amounts to what would be more weapons and power ups in another FPS. The AI is juvenile. Enemies simply run straight at you and their location is predictable when replaying an area.

The level of violence in Undying is much less then one would anticipate for a horror video game. When you attack an enemy they simply fall down, radiate a little red stuff and fade away. Even lopping off heads with the scythe is unsatisfying. Kingpin and Soldier Of Fortune fans everywhere are laughing! The story is laughable as well. In all fairness, most computer games have silly stories but this was the one area of Undying where I expected Clive Barker to shine through.

This game is supposed to be scary??? I guess I just haven’t fallen for the marketing ploy of Barker's name and a big yellow warning sticker on the box. ... The only positive thing I can say about it is that the uninstaller works great.

Hmm...er....

First off I would like to congratulate EA for making a SUPERB trailer for Undying, hell, I was caught off guard, I began my immediate purchase on my road for supah-dupah disappointment.
It's not scary, I think it's even funny. The characters arent scary, the SFX SUX, the textures are almost too wide, its ridiculous. I really tried hard to be scared but I just couldnt. I tried to enjoy it but I failed. It's like playing Counter Strike while on PCP.

I have many games but this is one of the worst, I have a new
PC with all the advanced bells and whistles. I was really getting into this game, great graphics, easy commands, and after
approx half hour of play [CRASH] got tech help, tried again
things are going great [CRASH] after several more attempts I gave this game to someone with perhaps more skills than I have.
too bad this game seemed so promising.

Check your video driver first.

Clive Barkers Undying looks like it would be fun to play, but I'll never know because my computer uses Savage video driver. The two products simply will not get along.
Check out what type of video driver your system has before ordering Undying

Could be a good game but...

The graphics, sounds and the story in this game are good but the saving feature is just a real pain. Levels are so small that once you entered to the room and want to move on the next area you have to wait for the next level to load, and when that happens repeatedly 4 - 5 times for 20 minutes of game play it really not only gets annoying, but almost pisses you off. Another thing: once you died you have to wait for the level to start again and than load your last save since the game doesn't load it automatically. And it happens very often so instead of actually having fun playing you have to stare at the screen with the sign "LOADING" most of the game. So basically it all spoils fun so much that you want to just give up and throw the disk to the garbage.
This game could be a good piece, but developers did their best to spoil the fun

The bugs are coming! The bugs are coming!

It could have been easily the game of the year. It's downright horrifying and intense. With such masterpiece graphics, sounds and feel it is easy to forgive the lack of replay value. But, BUT, the horrible bugs inroduced to the game, along with a bad-balnced gameplay, just ruined it all. The weapons are lame, the control imprecise. Far too many mouse - excercise jumping exactly from here to there wear down the experience. Then there are the bugs- no doubt the worst monstaers out there. You must not ever drain the spears from the speargun- do so and no weapon will ever shoot again. Ah, and there are plenty more for you there. Try and see for yourself- your dissapointment is assured.

Undying: Fun Dies Quickly

It is disturbing to me that so many respected reviewers are praising a first person shooter without Multiplayer with 9.0+ and 5 star scores. Undying is a fair entertainment product that uses the Unreal Engine. It is not a ground breaking program, nor important piece of gaming history. It is a fair game bacause it accomplishes to create a horrific and spooky atmosphere using sound and inspired level design. It is unimportant due to failure in almost every other department. The single player game can be finished quickly in a few days and replay value is zero, considering the linear scripted story, which is under-developed to say the least.

not near as good as it could have been

So when EA was having some problems fleshing out their latest first-person shooter, they decided that it might be a good idea to ask famed horror writer Clive Barker for some assistance. Barker, seemingly always eager to find new ways to scare people, jumped at the chance. So what's the end result like? First, lets talk about the design of the game. It sure looks nice enough. UNDYING is a visually gratifying game. A lot of scary sounds and noises will also be streaming out of your speakers; There's no fault in the audio department either. It's also easy to spot Barker's influence. People who've read some of his novels or seen some of his films will easily recognize Barker's twisted imagination. This is certainly a great kick for fans of his. But in the end UNDYING winds up falling short on the game play side of things; And as always, it's game play above graphics. First off, the developers seems to have forgotten the golden rule of scaring people. For as Alfred Hitchcock once said, the greatest scare is waiting for the murder and not the murder itself. Well, Hitchcock might have said something like that and it sure does ring true. UNDYING starts out spooky enough, but suddenly you're bombarded by fiends from all sides and you quickly find yourself too busy killing monsters to be afraid of them. This problem also tears away the story's credibility. The mansion (most of the game takes place in a huge Victorian manor) is filled with servants and I can't see why any one of the would stay there if the house was packed to the brim with monsters. I also didn't like the weaponry in UNDYING. I like weapons to resemble real life weapons, and one instalment in your arsenal is a golden dragonhead that spews bolts of ice. I mean, what's that? Apparently, Barker talked a lot about lending credibility to the characters in the game; They shouldn't have refrained from adding a bit of credibility to other aspects of the game as well. So the end result, and my conclusion, is that UNDYING is a game that's certainly enjoyable enough, but it's nowhere near where it should be.
