Great game; a few setbacks...

I fell in love with all the 'Monkey Island' games, especially 'Curse of Monkey Island'. On Christmas morning, I was ecstatic to find 'Escape' waiting for me under the tree. The game's graphics are awesome, and all the animation is very smooth. The voice acting is superb, and the soundtrack is phenomenal. The backgrounds and characters are lush and extremely detailed. The storyline is intriguing and captivating. I loved the way past characters and locations tended to pop up.

Of course, the game's not quite perfect. Once and a while, 'Escape' tends to get a little choppy and slow. I usually experienced these problems if I played for more than 45 minutes or so at once. Also, the game is very short and comes with a walkthrough (D-U-M-B idea). These two factors greatly take away from the experience of the game. I couldn't help but cheat when I was stuck (I have very little willpower).

Overall, the game was excellent, but not excellent enough for a perfect score. I really think it deserves a 4.5, but of course I can't.

Anyway, I definitely recommend this game to die-hard 'Monkey Island' fans as well as newcomers. It may be a good idea to wait a few weeks though, prices on these things go down quickly.

Pull out the Grog and polish the pegleg because this one is worth every penny. Heres some murry the demonic skull easter eggs for you guys for when you buy the game. When you talk to murry and hear everything he has got to say about bringing eviiill muhahahahah upon the world you can type skull anytime and get a heart stopping suprise. Also after talking to him about everything and spinning him around untill he repeats himsefl if you turn yourself away so your not facing anything and type in Murrayball you get another fun suprise. Lastly in the changing booth by the diving board go in and out of the changing booth around 15 times for another surprise. Enjoy mateys.

LucasArts has done it again!

It's about time! After seeing the diminishing number of grpahic adventures over the past 5 years, it's great to see LucasArts is not ditching the category that made it famous. Seeing that The Curse of Monkey Island is the best computer game in the last ten years, at least, this game will no doubt blow us all away!

A great game-- Not as great as previous installments

There is something to be said about having the courage to take a cartoon-game series like Monkey Island and turn it into polygonal 3D. But Lucas Arts had always been famous for "Knowing What They're Doing"-- So although the move to 3D was a curious one, Lucas Arts definitly did the best they could have done with it. Which doesn't help the fact that this series should have stayed 2D. 3D animation is beginning to monopolize the computer gaming industry, but with all due respect to the smoothness and flexibility of aliased polygons, they simply haven't reached the point of actually being better than drawings. They are less expressive with characters, which is the most important thing in games such as Monkey Island. Also, the backgrounds seem less detailed in this game when compared to the previous "Curse of Monkey Island" game.

But enough about the graphics... What about the puzzles and story? Well, the game IS awfully short... However most of the puzzles are pretty logical (in this game's world, anyway). Some are brilliant (the Swamp puzzle) while some are ridiculous (a puzzle involving a Cologne and a stuffed animal). I solved the game, without using the included walkthrough even once, in five days. The story is more original than the one in the previous game, but alas, the atmosphere is completely gone here. While in previous games you were drawn into the romantic and beautiful world of the ancient caribbeans, this one lacks any sort of atmosphere whatsoever. Suddenly the subject of pirates seems jarring, and it becomes strange to see a guy walking around talking about being a mighty Grog-swilling pirate, when just across the street he can get a cuppucino and cheeseburger (with the waiter dressed in a T shirt and jeans). Another minus is the music-- Not even close to being as good as in the previous game, it gets repetitive quickly.

I can recommend this only to fans of the Monkey Island series. I enjoyed it only because I am one of those.

Good...I mean..GREAT!

australian devoleper, hostile take overs, giant robots, resturants, banks and tellers, it feels like a bad episode of something, and this part is at no way connected to any MI series in my mind, becuse MI is all about pirates and high seas adventures, not to mention the controls wich is really bad since they took the mouse off, better luck next time lucas...

Nice game, but...

A great game for beginners, still better than Curse of Monkey Island, for sure. Nice jokes, puzzles, cool animations... But it is definitely not the sequel we, old classic-adventurers, have been waiting for so many years. I got very disappointed when I first played CMI. After I finished the game I was like: "So what!" Perhaps I was expecting too much from it. It was a sequel for the best adventure games made ever: Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island II, made by Ron Gilbert, the magnificient. So it had to be perfect, but it was not. Many of the questions, which remain open after the mysterious end-scene of MI2, were still not answered. So I did not expect too much this time when I bought EMI. The story of the game tries to fill in the gaps of the previous games but is still weak. The interface is disastrous. The interfaces of the first two games have been cornerstones for most of the game-programmers; many nice games have been written thereafter imitating MI interfaces. But in EMI, for a reason that I did not understand, programmers felt that they are forced to or have to use new 3D accelerator's "advantages", which make the game nothing but one of the ordinary games of the last few years. The game brings nothing new for classic-adventure fans but if you are looking just for fun for a couple of hours, it may be a good one.?

It could get better

I agree with most Monkey Island fans out there... Why it had to be 3D? The drawing stile from Curse of Monkey Island (third game) was great, very funny. Now we'll have to watch Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine in their aliased romance.

Well, it's still a Monkey Island game, so you'll get everything and still more you've got from the past games: Humour, hours of game play, lots of insults and some great memories from the past Monkey Island games. If you never played a Monkey Island game, it's a good title to start.

I feel like I am back in the late 1980's!!

I can't believe the format of this game. Unless you have a joy stick, it is very difficult to play. I thought using the key board to move a character went out with the the King's Quest games (even as old as they are, they are easier to play than this one). Even my 13 year old granddaughter found it difficult to move the characters. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't have any trouble installing it. I also think the graphics are pretty good. All in all, I was really disappointed!!

P.S. If anyone found a way to use a mouse on this game, please let me know.

I dont know about you, but there was something missing in 3

I think there was something missing in CMI, and that was amusing credits, I dont know if any of you have done this, but watch the credits of any of the old Lucasarts games, there are lots of funny bits like "thanks to my mates dog" and stuff like that, but in CMI, there was nothing worth watching them for, and no good ending like "its now time to switch off your computer and go to bed".

Ok maybe im a sad git, but you come to expect these things when you have had them for 10 years :)
