This has gotta be a great game!!!

Guild Wars was recommended to me 2 weeks before launch by a friend. For now, all the Amazon reviews on this game state real highly about the game. RARELY does a game ever attract so many users to give positive feedback. This game is extremely fun, and it is my second day playing. It is absolutely a blast, its free which is even better, but as far as the game goes... leveling takes awhile. Even on level 3 which I am at right now, its very slow but its fun! The graphics are great, I've seen better in a different MMORPG called PristonTale. I believe they have the best graphics ever!! But this is Guild Wars we're talking about, sooo if your looking for a EXCELLENT game, and easy to understand game, I would definetly go for this game! Its a bit high in price, but its extremely fun.

Additional info:

- You can minimize the game!
- NO lag whatsoever...
- Broadband Connection recommended
- You will have fun !!!

Free online play, but a bit of a let-down.

The one thing this game has going for it is the free online play, and that's a big plus, but unfortunately after you get beyond the fact that it's cheap, there's not much to this game. After you get through the tutorial part of the game, the world changes and the landscapes are suddenly depressing - everything is blasted, dry and dead. Also, there are only humans around - no elves, no dwarves. There are no cities and no villages. A tent is the best shelter anyone has. It may fit within the storyline, but it is SO depressing. I've played four online games so far (Star Wars Galaxies, Lineage 2, City of Heroes and Everquest 2), and I think I enjoyed playing all of those games more than I enjoy Guild Wars. I miss having my own home to decorate, as I did in SWG and Everquest 2.

All in all, Guild Wars is playable and enjoyable in terms of game mechanics, but the game world is depressing and there's just not enough variety to hold my interest.

THIS GAME ISNT WHAT THEY PROMISE!!!

GUILD WARS is a Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, not the promised MASSIVLY Multiplayer Online Game. The only thing Massive about this game are the Towns, which act like giant 3D lobbies. In these towns is where you meet up with about 100 characters if your lucky. After you leave town there is no one. All areas outside of town is a giant Instance. This means that when you leave you and only you are in that area, not anyone else (unless you grouped together with up to 8 people in the town). This makes the game extreamly dull and lifeless.

Now the gameplay. I found that the skill system was horrible, because of the fact that you have 100's of skills but you can ony use 8 of them at any given time, and you cant change which 8 you want to use unless you go back into town and change them. What is the point! They say it is an innovation and adds a level of skill to the gameplay. I say that the game developers were just being lazy.

Now a game that is coming from some ex-Blizzard employees that worked on Diablo II i was suprised at how extreamly lame the Weopons and Armor system was in this game. Instead of finding super rare items and pimpin out your gear like most wanna do (especially when you reach that ridiculous level cap, which is only 20) you have to find materials so AI crafters can make armor out of the materials you bring in. Now this is also featured in World of Warcraft(WoW), but unlike Guild Wars(GW) the super elite enemies actually drop armor!!! Instread of some totally rad bear fur(sense the sarcasim).

The level 20 level cap is just plain wrong! For people who spend 100's of hours of their life involved in a MMORPG theyd sure like to stand out a little more than the guy that has played for about 3 hours total and has the same level (level 20).

Now this game is supposed to be focused around PVP (player vs. player). Well this isnt much fun either considering that there is absoltly no team cooperation between players. Maybe they should provide a headset and voice support or something instead of trying to make them type out strategy while they fight. "NER NER NER hey im attacking this guy and i need some help. NER NER NER, hey guy over there hel......", To late he's already dead, he couldnt type fast enough while he was getting he butt whooped. This PVP fails horribly.

Thier is also a feature that allows you to draw on the minimap to cordinate attacks and such. This feature is useless since most people draw obsene things such as penises instead of cordinating attacks.

WoW is a more in depth game allowing you to create groups on the run, take up a race, a class, and 2 professions and secondery professions. Since Guild Wars doesnt have this that means that I have a Character that is a HUMAN WARRIOR that has 2 professions of MINING(mine for raw materials needed to make stuff) and BLACKSMITHING (able to create armor and weopons from raw materials)and has a secondary profession which is fishing (catch fish to eat them). Guild Wars offers a RACE and a CLASS.

GW has no monthly pay because it really isnt a MMORPG so to say. It offers nothing more than Diablo II did but the difference is that Diablo II is way more fun and easier to pick up and play, and still has no monthly fee. Now WoW has that monthly fee of about 15 dollars a month. If I save up 50 cents every day for the month ill have my monthly payment. A candy bar is more than 50 cents. If you really wanted you could BUM 50 cents from someone thats how cheap it is.

GW offers little for your money and after you get to that level 20 cap and keep doing repetitive quests over and over again you'll be left at the end of the day feeling cheated and wondering "why is this worth 50 dollars"?

It was fun for a while...

This game had an interesting (though slightly predictable) storyline and relatively decent graphics (not as good as World of Warcraft). Some of the NPCs have tiresome dialogues that seem to ramble on forever. It's good that this game doesn't have a monthly fee to play because the levels go so quickly that you're left with nothing to do besides pvp afterward.
For the price though, I'd have to recommend it if you're only interested in a quick amusement until something else comes out.

hours and hours of entertainment

I bought this game for my first online game and love it. I have been playing for the last 6 months and it is still enjoyable no matter how many times I restart. Graphics are great and the people play this game are cool. And the free online play is great. I recommend this to anyone

Guild Wars is probably the best game out there, online or offline.
But what makes Guild Wars so great? That is what I shall be explaining throughout my review.
Before you get to the adventures and battles, you must create you own character. Although that may not sound very interesting, creating a character in Guild Wars is actually quite fun, and is consisted of five easy steps.
Step one: choose which kind of character you want, and by this I do not mean a profession. I mean whether you want a role-playing character or a pvp only character. If you choose a role-playing character then you play though the whole game, starting at level one and with poor equipment. If you choose a pvp only character then you can only fight other players.
Step two: choose a profession. The professions that you may choose are these.
Warrior: A Warrior relies on strength and melee weapons. A Warrior may wield a sword, an axe, or a hammer with equal skill. If the Warrior wields a sword or an axe, then they may also equip a shield for increased defense. If the Warrior wields a hammer, then they may do more damage but not carry a shield.
Ranger: The Ranger is a very skilled archer and survivor. They may lay traps and are extremely deadly at a distance. They also have the ability to charm animals, who will then follow them and fight to the death to protect them.
Monk: The Monk has the ability to call upon the favor of the gods to protect and heal allies, as well as smite enemies.
Necromancer: The Necromancer uses dark magic to drain their opponent's life and take it for their own, as well as deal a significant amount damage to one or more targets. They may also use corpses to their advantage by gaining health from them or raising undead minions.
Elementalist: The Elementalist uses the power of fire, water, earth and air to destroy their foes. Fire deals a large amount of damage to enemies and usually has an area of effect, so it is especially effective against large groups of foes. Water slows down enemies and blurs their vision. Earth is very good for defense, and Air concentrates its power on a single target.
Mesmer: The Mesmer specializes in draining their opponent's health and energy as well as dealing damage back to the dealer.
After making this very important decision, you will move on to step three.
Step three: choose what gender you want your character to be. This choice will have no bearing on the actual game and merely a matter of preference.
Step four: choose how you want your character to look. You may choose a hair style, a hair color, a face and a skin color. Each profession looks different and like step three will have no bearing on the actual game and is a matter of preference.
Step five: choose your character's name, this name must consist of at least two words and may only be used with English letters. You may not choose a name if it is already being used by someone else. Once you have made all of your choices, don't worry too much about making your character perfect as you can always start over and change whatever you want. When you are sure that you are happy with your decision, click the play button.
First, you will see a short cut scene of the city of Ascalon and about how the beastly Charr, which are a large and aggressive species, are becoming a threat and how Adlebern, the king of Ascalon, is in need of heroes.
Afterwards, you appear in that very same city of Ascalon. You are level one and possess very poor equipment. Go talk to the man directly in front of you with the large, green exclamation point above his head. Once you have done this, your training has begun.
In order to began your adventure and become a hero, you must choose a secondary profession. Once you choose your secondary profession however, you may not change your mind! So be sure that you like your secondary profession before you make the ultimate commitment.
After doing a few quests in Ascalon, you will level up! You will then acquire attribute points. As an example of attribute points, let's say that you are a Ranger. One of your attributes is Marksmanship, which increases the amount of damage you do with your attacks and will affect the effectiveness of Marksmanship skills.
Skills are even better. For instance, a Ranger could have skills such as Read the Wind, which makes your arrows move twice as fast and will deal an amount of extra damage depending on how many points you put into Marksmanship.
Once you feel that you are ready, and after you have gotten your second profession, go talk to Sir Tydus and say that you are ready to go.
So stop playing Runescape and enter the world of Tyria.

As a Diablo 2 veteran, this game fills in for the gap until a next one appears. The storyline is very well scripted and it keeps the player interested until the end. Battling isn't too hard as everything is simple and easy to pick up and play. I recommend this game for other RPG players that are looking for a great game to play.

Sorry, just can't get into it

If you are

a: someone who likes to spend a lot of time in chat rooms going "LOL LMAO ROTFLMAO!" or repetitively typing other chat acronyms

-or-

b: someone who enjoy press your mouse button over and over and killing monsters (i.e. hack and slash)

You will probably enjoy this game.
It's really too bad. The developers obviously spent a lot of time making this game, and there is even some good history and plot lines in the game. But it just doesn't pan out... maybe its the other players that are involved, I'm not sure, but it just doesn't benefit the RP'ing genre very well.
I think their intention was to take out all player conflict and relieve all consequences of dying or losing. The problem with having nothing to lose is that you really have nothing to gain. There is no player conflict between loot and you can't fight each other (except in a controlled environment where there are no consequences to losing).

I'm sure the younger audiences will enjoy this game as it certainly looks pretty... but it just doesn't cut it as an RPG

Ok but totally for the apocalyptic everything's burning guys

The game came recommended to me by an aquaintance on WoW that works for NCsoft. I've almost played them all and I'm highly addicted to online gaming. I went out and bought my bud and me copies of this on the recommendation alone. The game play is up to par with the competition and beyond in many areas. If you read the other reviews here on Amazon they are pretty much on the mark. However I would have given this a total heads except for the fact that I personally hate all this post-war apocalyptic garbage. As you start out learning the game you are in a totally awesome graphic environment. I feel, even though it's not 100% lifelike that it even beat out EQ2. The falling leaves and sunlight through the trees, lush countryside and waterfalls are breathtaking. But as you leave safety behind for the real outside world (and no, you can't go home again) you end up two years down the road in a totally destroyed landscape - red black and brown and the same few mobs over and over again. It's cool for most people, especially the teens that like this sort of thing, but I've actually been driven off after almost 2 weeks to adding a game to my arsenal that I thought I'd probably never end up playing - FFXI. I'll pay the monthly fee and stick with the WoW, the EQ2 and the FFXI until I go bankrupt. The red glow night after night is hard on the eyes.
