You should have experience in this genre

Tropico is a very exciting game where you are the ruler of Tropico, a fictional island nation in the tropics. You select which person you want to be, select how many years you want to reign, and you are now a leader. You must develop the country with a limited amount of money. But if your new to the simulation genre, you don't want to buy this game right away. You should try games that aren't as hard as this. Roller Coaster Tycoon is about the only place to start because it's easy and it has the basic challenges this genre offers. The reason why this game is harder than others is because your citizens not only need shelter, but they need farms for food, Factories and plants for jobs, and pubs and Sporting facilities for entertainment. They also belong to factions that desire one thing but another faction doesn't want it. New players to this genre might not know how to handle the rebels who launch attacks on government buildings. Bottom line: This game has its up's and down's, but overall, it something to buy.

I've had this game for a while. I was very excited about the premise, being a dictator and all. I'm a big fan of the Civ-style godgames. But honestly. This game is boring. Sure the graphics are good. The concepts are interesting. You have a lot of control over what kind of dictator you'd be, etc. But I swear, you just end up doing things the same way. I've found that being an oppressive dictator, well, its just too pointless. It takes alot of time to figure out who to oppress, to actually find them, oppress them (jail them, assassinate, etc), and when its all said and done, you make more enemies than you eliminated. Its just easier to "play nice" and you are more successful. I found myself playing out the exact same games over and over and over again the exact same way... no matter what my island looked like, no matter the characteristics of my dictator. Always basically the same.

Lots of pretty graphics and alot of player control... but still turns out to be a monotonous game. Still... not a horrible game, but not a spectatular one either. I'd say, when this game goes "on sale" it would be more worth the price... but at full price, I don't think I would buy it again if I had it to do over.

cool game

Tropico is a fun game. After playing the rather large demo (180 megs) which contains the tutorial, I decided to buy it. The install was easy, tho contains no options (such as full or partial install) and took up about 870 megs. Gameplay is simple with a fairly well designed control bar. The graphics are first rate but once your island grows as you build more stuff and more people come in on boats it will get choppy on slower machines. I highly recommend a 3D card. I use a GeForce2 w/64 megs on a PIII 500 and it runs almost flawlessly with the graphics turned all the way up. The only time it slows down is when I rotate camera angles. I use smooth unit animation and even when zoomed out you can stil see the people walking around. It's awesome! Overall it's a good game and is addicting. There are tonnes of options, buildings to choose from, and various difficulty levels to accomodate all types of players as well as a new expansion pack "Paradise Island". I esp. like the "sandbox" mode which gives you unlimited money and no political concerns. If you are a die-hard sim fan and just want to build a cool island, this mode is for you. Definitely check this game out!

I just like being called "El Presidente".

This is a great game that is sure to be a way too addicting use of your time. The game play isn't very technical, so if you love games like Alpha Centauri, keep in mind that this game lacks some of that kind of depth. Nonetheless, I found Tropico to be incredibly fun. But while it's an easy game to get started on, it's more difficult to get high scores, so don't think that Tropico isn't challenging.

As "El Presidente" you build the island's economy, develop diplomatic relations with Russia and China, and all the while attempt to keep your people and the factions they form happy. You can build up your own personal Swiss Bank account by either padding the cost of your development, or by using bankers to siphen money from the treasury. You must decide whether to allow your people liberty, or force your will upon them with a large military presence. Another bonus - the latin music in the background is awesome; it definately sets the mood. All in all, I think this is a great game that I would highly recommend checking out.

Would not install with Windows ME

Thought I would really have fun with the game because the package looked and sounded so nice. BUT COULD NOT GET THE GAME TO INSTALL. I'm using Windows ME and the game would go to 50% install - then crash. Could not de-install using "ADD/Remove Programs". Had to go into C Drive and delete it from there. Still unable to remove Tropico game title from "register" file. Real disappointing. And that very little piece of paper(4x4)for "install problems" is a joke.

Awsome!

Ive been a simcity and roller coaster tycoon fan for years and I never liked any other game, until Tropico came out. I first saw it in my magizine and i was freaked about this game. I immediatly bought it and i lived up to my dreams. Swiss bank accounts, inqistion, propaganda, and the ability to control a hole island was a wonder i never thought possible. With a wonderful sound track and over 50 buildings this is a great game!

Tropico is good, but there are better

If you have played the demo you might have noticed the game's lush environment, friendly gameplay and a soundtrack that makes you practically feel the sunny carribean breeze and the sound of the palm trees swaying and so on. However The full game is not at all better than the demo, the only real differences are more music, random map generator, additional buildings and some scenarios. The music is nice, yet the random map generator is only good for what ifs(like what if i get good relations with usa and let them build a base on my island and then do the same to soviets?) which can practically all be done in the tutorial and the additional buildings don't add much. So in the end, go and play the demo for about a week, if you still think it's worth it by the end of thaat week, then you can safely buy it.

Creative, intelligent, and most of all FUN

This game can really be summed up in one word: FUN. Because of what others have said about this being a shallow game, I think this deserves a real explanation. I played the game for the first couple of hours, and it kept me really interested, even kept me up past midnight the first night of playing the game. I was a little disappointed at the time, and thought I had perhaps spent too much on such a shallow game. I went back at it later the next evening, and was just taken immediately by the breadth and immersion that the game provides. I really felt "attached" to my island and its people as well as its ultimate development and pursuit of a capitalistic society. Tropico will provide you with hours upon hours of wonderful entertainment ... just give it time to grow on you!

Can't get enough of it...

I'm a big fan of Sim-type games where you control a city or group of sim "people". Among my favorites are Rollar Coaster Tycoon, SimGolf, The Sims, and SimCity 3000.

PLEASE add Tropico to the list...

I just can't get enough of this game. The idea of ruling an island and figuring out how to be a successful leader is great.
There are all types of people, events, buildings, and problems that need your attention in this game. You can adjust the difficutly to suit your needs.

I tried over and over again to keep winning the island elections in hopes of successfully building my first airport and the many tourist attractions. Phew! Hard work...but I finally did it. This game is fun, challenging, and hilarious!

It's easy to pick up this game cheap these days! I definitely recommend it for the $10 price tag! You should also spend a couple extra bucks for the Paradise Island add-on. I can't WAIT for Tropico 2[.]

I love it. As a native of Puerto Rico, I saw many places and Individuals from my childhood in this game. The man who did the graphics most be a Hispanic or spends most of the time in the tropics. The male farmer looks like my grandfather! Even the Denim shirt that he always used! There are papaya and banana trees on my mother's house that are just like the ones in the game. So I play it all the time. It's is worth the money.
