Would not install with Windows ME

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 5 / 9

Thought I would really have fun with the game because the package looked and sounded so nice. BUT COULD NOT GET THE GAME TO INSTALL. I'm using Windows ME and the game would go to 50% install - then crash. Could not de-install using "ADD/Remove Programs". Had to go into C Drive and delete it from there. Still unable to remove Tropico game title from "register" file. Real disappointing. And that very little piece of paper(4x4)for "install problems" is a joke.

The Never Lasting

You think and it also seem's like it will be a great game, but not. I have not seen such a bad game since Pokemon. You a president in a island which you build stuff. The game is very slow and you can only be in office for a certain time. I finished the game in 45min. I regret buying the game

dont buy this game

Why? because apparently the makers of this game were in a rush to make it to the top sales chart to get their $$$ as soon as possible. If they worked on it a bit more, the game woulda rocked. Too bad money got to their heads. Here are my reasons why this game is terrible:

The workers/builders are too stupid

It takes 20 years for 50 workers to finish building an airport(these guys waste 15 of the 20 years digging grounds)

Time moves too fast, people move too slow

Playing on a big island is terrible. You gotta watch these slow... move around because their are no vehicles(takes one person 3 months to walk at a distance of 2 miles)

People are always unhappy

... always bug you

There are many more!!!!!!!!!!

Just don't buy this game, im serious... its not worth your money

Poor timing and herky jerky graphics destroy good concept

Sounds Kewl does it not, rule your own island ala Fidel, Baby Doc etc??? Unfortunately this game is just like any other sim game in that after you play it once or twice it gets pretty BORING.

I have to agree this game should not be purchased if you have a slow computer. Even if you have a fast or medium speed computer it still runs herky jerky. The game's timing stinks. In one game it took me 50 years to build an airport. YAWN its 2006 people here is your airport.

Then there is the stupid political side of the game, no Grenada scenario here folks...throw the US a bone and they leave you alone, my experience was the Soviets could care less. But do I really expect them to do anything in 1998, 2003 or 2008?

Then there is all the left wing economic [stuff], NOW WONDER COMMUNISM AND SOCIALISM FAILED. How can you manage an economy with no free market??

I like the concept. The execution failed miserably and unless you are a SIM nut I would avoid this game.

This game is really boring. Nothing really happens. You build housing, businesses and roads. Then nothing! Oh wait, you have to do a budget. I'll pass

avoid this

I feel I should post how much I hated this piece of junk here, since the other reviews seem to give the impression that it's a fantastic game and everybody will love it. I couldn't stand it and took it back a couple of days later. All the positive reviews below positively puzzle me, since engaged in a conversation about this game in the local EB, everybody else declared they had hated it too. So who's writing those reviews?

The thing is too slow! It takes about 50 years to build a school. And the economics of the game don't make sense either -- you charge nothing for rent and pay everybody beaucoup bucks, and still everybody moves off your island and the birth rate decreases.

Also, this game is not as funny as the programmers obviously believe. I agree with the reviewer below who said that the manual is much funnier than the actual game.

Lastly, the graphics of the game are overcomplex, meaning that the game will be extremely fussy on most setups. This wouldn't be such a problem, but Tropico either has no tech support line, or they don't answer what they say is the support line, or they've done a fantastic job with hiding the contact information of the real tech support line. In other words, after a couple of days of trying, I couldn't get any help.

this game relies heavily on a red-green scale for the placement of industries, farms, and the like.. .. colorblind people (like me) will find that frustrating..

Good Idea Bad Interface

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 4 / 11

How a great concept went this bad is unbelievable. The interface is awkward. The statistics are presented in such a way that you are never quite sure what exactly is going on. There is no easy way to change anything, you must hunt around the screen to find anything, for all the micro managers out there it might be worth trying. Soundtrack is good for the first game or so then it must be turned off or a headache will occur. The manual is the type that requires the purchase of an "Official Strategy Guide." There are no real explainations in the manual at all. The final problem is the appearance, the graphics were great in Railroad Tycoon II (Tropico uses the same "Engine")because there you really didn't have to hunt around the screen to play the game, there was always a menu choice. In Tropico the muddy graphics muddle the mix and just make it frustrating to have to click on the smallest building to change its settings. Wait two weeks it will be in the bargain bin.

Good idea, not a great product

This city building idea certainly has significant visual qualities, there's just too many over sights that make this game difficult to get into. First of all, it move very slowly. I run a P3 with 550 mhz with all the graphics rendering and it is very choppy. Another major dissapointment is that you don't have control as to the direction to place most of your buildings. I personally like city building games to create a certain aesthetic feel.

This engine might have worked just fine for Railroad Tycoon II, but that game didn't involve human characters. Lack of improvement to there existing engine causes the game to move too slowly for satisfying play.

Time moves fast, but the people move slow. Maybe they wanted to capture the feel of real Carribean life, unfortunately it's tough to get things done. That may not be a negative for some people.

The graphics are fantastic, the music is great and the characters are interesting. I still like to play the game, but probably not for long. I just can't get over how slow it is!

Decent

Tropico is a decent simulation of what it takes to successfully run a country.

The ease of use and learning is great.
The idea of becoming a semi-modern Caribbean Dictator was a nice change from the existing games available when this game came out, however, the game play is not very good. The options are EXTREMELY limited. You have roughly 10 political options to choose from, and essentially your only other choice is building. The buildings are nothing special, and the game clock moves too fast, even on the slowest setting.

Maybe the best modern political simulation, but you'd still be better off buying AOE or Civilization.
