I waited anxiously for Tropico to hit the stores and got the game before it was shelved. At first I was quite disappointed. I had expected the game to be "bigger." However, after playing it for a short time I was quite addicted (much the same way as I was with SimCity and the other building strategy games). The addiction seems to be more for the building aspect than anything in particular about this game. It does not group for management but merely for viewing. Management of various aspects is not very easy. The game needs more reporting. For instance, I can't tell how much total food my people need/produce. I would have wanted more things to become available as the time went on such as carts, vehicles, and/or transportation, things to work toward. The sound was cute for the first few minutes. I don't see a lot of long-term interest but am really enjoying playing it - for now.

You ever wonder what it would be like to be Fiedel Castro. Well if you do you must get this game. It is a great sim game and has many features and things to build. You can have tourists, run farms, make cigars, grow tobacco, and much more. You can execute people and even put them in jail. There are elections and if you make the people happy you will prevail. This game can get addicting so be careful. The graphics aren't what you would call magnificent, but most sim games don't have the best graphics. If you purchase this game you will not regret it and you will spend hours being the leader of the people. Long live El Presidente!

Tropico, Why it's that ...Good

An Island. Your the Dictator, Heaven? For me yes. Tropico takes place on an Island and you have to control the lives of the Inhabitants of Tropico (yeah thats the name of the Island). First they like you then you have to keep your people happy by giving them jobs, housing and healthcare. Entertainment and money are all part of the parcel. The best bit is where YOU chose the kind of dictator YOU want to be. I like the Womanising Alchoholic trained by the KGB myself. Your rise to power and everthing is included. Immigrants may come to your Island and you can chuck em' or keep em'. It's up to you. This is one of the best games I have played on. And I have played on many. My rating is 90%.

For those of you who enjoy games like SimCity, Tropico is perfect. This is a game that has a personality and is difficult to master. It will challenge you to manage your country's finances, your people's various needs, and hold you accountable for political ramifications for your decisions.

Tropico is a great game. For everyone who says it gets boring after a week, it is totally not true. The graphics are great, and so is the music. When i bought this game i wasnt expecting it to be like sim city, and it isnt at all, although you do build a lot of things. It is a great game if you like strategy and building. Most of all, the best part is building the city and focusing on what the citizens want. Just by looking at the box, you can tell if you like it or not, and for me, i looked at it and wanted it right away.

When I first bought this game I thought, 'Well, you control an island... it can't be that good.' How wrong I was. It goes so much deeper that you will be surprised by the sheer amount of detail! You could call it a mix between Simcity and Constructor in that you build on a large scale and are unable to control them directly. It's only real drawback is its occasional difficulty. The bickering citizens with all sorts of beliefs may start to get on your nerves. Apart from that this really is a GREAT game but with 'Simsville' coming out soon, how will it fair? Buy it Today... or wait for Simsville, me? I'm getting both!

Awsome!

Ive been a simcity and roller coaster tycoon fan for years and I never liked any other game, until Tropico came out. I first saw it in my magizine and i was freaked about this game. I imediatly bought it and i lived up to my dreams. Swiss bank accounts, inqistion, propaganda, and the ability to control a hole island was a wonder i never thought possible. With a wonderful sound track and over 50 buildings this is a great game!

The Tropico Demo

I have not seen much of tropico, only played the demo, but it seems that the demo does not exclude much. There are only a few things you can't build (i.e cattle ranches, cathedrals, sports complexes and airports(therefore disabling some of the more interesting edicts)).
The demo is set at 100% normal level, so it's not hard but not easy. One thing I find really exciting about Tropico is the high effect of your actions on the the political views of America, Russia, tourists and the islands inhabitants. The threat I faced was not high (that may have something to do with giving the people what they want) although the aspect of keeping competion down was very enthralling.
The international factor of the game needs some polishing. For example, if you make an alliance with Russia, but you find American prospects better, you cannot expel the Russians, or get the Americans to come and help.
One of my favourite things about the games I can't play, i.e. random maps, is that you can choose your own character. So you can choose Fidel Castro (current dictator of Cuba) and reflect your personal views of him or make him the absolute opposite of what he is. So Fidel Castro can become a religious zealot(which he isn't because he doesn't let anyone preach on cuba and other outlying island under control of Cuba) or a womanizer. This personallization makes the game easier or harder i.e. more interesting.

So how can I summarize? You are the Governor of Tropico during the Cold war and are in the middle of the Carribean, too close to Russian forward bases and the American back line. The only people you have to satisfy are foreingers and the people. No pesky advisors. As soon as one group of foreigners is dissatisfied, they will attack, unless the other group is protecting you, and if the people are discontent, they'll run of and do battle with your soldiers (unless your soldiers are revolting!) 9 and 1/2 out of ten! That's good for a first release!

Fantastic game

Tropico is a ton of fun, and unlike many other games, you don't get bored of it after a while. The gameplay is great, very open-ended, and very entertaining. I find it to be a much more realistic sim than some other games...buildings take time to create, workers take time to come to your island from other countries, and there are endless ways to run a country...same is true with Tropico.

There are many different "paths to greatness": you can make money from industry(rum, jewelry, etc.), farming and mining, tourism, fishing, or all of them. You can keep your island heavily guarded by military (be careful...lack of liberty is not tolerated by citizens) or you can let your people do whatever the heck they want (again, be careful. don't let them start a rebellion).

This game has few downsides.
-The interface isn't well designed. It takes up a lot of space, and doesn't provide easy access to info.
-Buildings cannot always be rotated as you want them, which is quite annoying if you want a Tenement to overlook the water, for example.

Overall, a great game, definitely worth buying.

This is just plain addictive! The best part is the character selection...so many dictators, so little time. As El Presidente you have absolute control over all the people on your little island and if anyone causes trouble just have them shot or jailed! The gameplay is pretty addictive, but I think it loses a star because it can get pretty repetitive. Nonetheless, this is an excellent game.
