Wanna be Castro?

This is a great simulation game and very well done. If you've ever wanted to be the leader of a banana republic here's your game. There really aren't any problems with the game and despite the cons above, there are ways to appease the various factions if you're willing to micromanage and I found the interface to be fairly easy to use. Some recent patches have corrected some problems/complaints: population is now unlimited and worker's productivity has increased. One of the big complaints I've seen from others is the fact that buildings are so slowly constructed. Well if you've ever been to a south of the border resort town you'll see that constuction is slow and the construction workers have a laid back attitude (I can only assume that productivity is at a min. when you aren't paid very much) so I think this is part of the realism of the game. If you're a fan of Simcity, Ceasar III and the like and/or love the lush graphics offered by Railroad Tycoon (same company, very similar graphics base) you enjoy this game as well. I even found myself laughing out loud at some of the antics that occur!

This game has so many options and choices and different ways to play it never gets old. It is ver creative and you can adjust the difficulty and even the goal of the game to suit your liking. An excellent simulation, the only problem is that the sequel from what I've heard has nothing to do with the original game

Alright, this is a very fun game, and I loved making the the perfect paradise(or a military dictatorship, depends on what kind of mood I'm in). The only problem I found was that after awhile it just got boring. Even the different scebarios were mostly the same.

A Really funny "presidente"

The game is about the ascension to power of a new leader in a poor and undeveloped tropical island.
You can customize your style (leftist intellectual, military general, high class aristocratic, etc).
You'll have to plan what kind of economic development you'll give to your people: farmers or factory men.
You'll have to feed them, educate them, provide them with religious comfort and tell them constantly you are the best leader they could ever had. All this supported by a strong army, just in case...
Beware: do not ever consider having enough money! Your public finances can go into red figures immediately and take you years to get them back in order. Thus, keep a wary eye on your expenditures!!!

GREAT idea, good clean fun, "Okay" reporting...

There is no denying that I've spent hours in front of my PC ignoring my loved ones over this game, but a few things annoy me. For instance some buildings just seem to lack electricity even though you have a sufficient amount of power plants. The advisor cries "Your people suffer from lack of medical treatment", "Your people starve, grow more food, quickly", and "It appears that some people find your rule unpleasant" Even though you: have plenty of clinics and hospitals, own plenty of farms, and have brought the happiness rating up from 50%. Is this game worth the money? Yes. Will you lose track of time with the fun details? Yes. Will you win the scenarios? Buy it and find out!

A GREAT GAME!

A mix between simcity 3000 and the sims. A great game. Its fun - entertaining - and doesn't require a high-end system. A well-balanced game that you build homes, factories, power plants, etc. I recommend this game to anyone who likes Simcity 3000. This game is like Simcity 3000 or Unlimited but it is more entertaining in my mind.

I love It!

I think that this game is excellent. It's unique game play idea (a dictator on an island) sold me when I saw it, when i got it home, i was more than pleased with all the small things that make the game great. also, as a fan of the sims games, i can say this is not that similar but you wont be disappointed if you buy it. what other game can you make someone a heretic from the church?

Very Impressive

The only thing I regret here is not buying this game sooner. I passed over it several times while gameshopping, and settled on other games with which I quickly bored or found myself less than satisfied. I'm not sure why other reviewers found it too hard to follow, because the tutorial combined with the quickstart guide in the manual made it playable right out of the box. Instant gratification ends there however, since the games approach to city-building and management is more realistic. Buildings don't just appear. They take time to be built. You have to priofitize what you want built and when. Land takes time to be leveled. Crops take time to grow and be delivered to the docks. However, all of this makes for VERY rich gameplay. Besides the scenarios, the option of open-ended play, combined with all the variables offered when a new game is started creates nearly endless possibilities and hours of enjoyable and diverse gameplay.

My advice? If you come across Tropico, especially in the bargain bin, grab it. You won't be sorry.

This is such a great game for those who love everything from SimCity to The Sims. On to Rollercoaster tycoon. I enjoy playing this game. The possibilities are endless. I'm sure any simulation lover will have hours of fun with this game. Right from the day I brought it home I loved it. I played it for hours straight. I've owned it a little while and continue to enjoy playing it for hours straight. I'm so happy that POPTOP is coming out with an expansion.

cheap fun...

For cheap thrills, Tropico is a good game. By now, it can be bought in most stores for around $10. While the premise of being the dictator of your own island is an intruiging one, there are a couple of quirks that keep the game from really living up to its promises.

Asassinate a rival political candidate to ensure your victory in the upcoming election and another person instantly steps up to run against you. Kill the new candidate and another volunteers! Don't they get the hint?!

The game is too short. You can only rule for a maximum of 70 years. (Isn't Castro going on year 115?) On the more difficult settings, it is almost impossible to make any cool progress in this amount of time. Freighters arrive to buy exports only a few times a year and large buildings take forever to build (especially if they are built away from the center of your town, like airports and hotels)

For the price of a cheap dinner out or a few video rentals, Tropico delivers some enjoyable and silly gameplay.
