great graphics, slow gameplay

I'm generally a fan of two types of games: sports games and shooters (1st and 3rd person). I'm not much of a strategy game player, so I don't have much interest in games like Final Fantasy and games of that ilk. But I typically devour every action game I buy (Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, GTA, James Bond: E or N, Medal of Honor, etc.). I'll play the game exclusively until I've beaten it, whereas I usually rotate between various sports games.

With Hitman 2, though, I can't bring myself to finish it. Not because of the difficulty of it (though it certainly does provide enough of a challenge), but so many of the levels are excruciatingly slow. The challenge and exceptional graphics become overshadowed by the significant number of levels that just plod along with very little action to keep the player entertained. I've read other reviews that claim that Hitman 2 is more about strategy and stealth than it is about straight up action, but silently creeping across snow fields that are seemingly miles long is just boring.

Splinter Cell bridged this gap nicely, as did Metal Gear Solid. There is plenty of stealth involved, while they're still peppered with enough action to keep the player immersed in the game. But Hitman 2 just doesn't pull me in. The action, when it's there, is good, and the graphics are phenomenal. Which is why it's frustrating that this may the first game that I'm not going to finish.

I fully approve of #47

The first mission of this game really .... me off. I'd strangle the grocery delivery man, steal his clothes. and then proceed into the don's estate; thing is the guards would eyeball me, figure me out, and blow me away. I finally ended up pulling a rambo and killing everyone to beat that mission. Later I went back and did things the right way. Thats the best part of hitman; though I advise against it, there are very few parts of the game that cant be beat by sheer ferocity if stealth fails.

however, you are a hitman and stealth is your job. This game has a great concept, and it really nails it through. This is to say it becomes genuinely exhilarating to get into the character and make a professional hit(okay that does not sound to healthy). at first it seems tedious to walk slowly by guards in a stolen police uniform on your way to the church tower to make the perfect hit. After you kill your mark you wonder if you'll be able to get to the street before the guards figure out where the shot came from.

The Graphics are above average, the storyline is the standard revenge cliche, however the missions are well thought out and have enought twists and turns to always keep it exciting. You get to use many different weapons, you kill with everything from knifes, bows, and guns, to fiberwire and poisoned blowfish. Also the settings of the missions offer a wide array of atmospheric settings. You have to sneak past sniper towers in a dense snow storm, rob a rich playboy, and infiltrate a high security military compound via the sewers to name a few.

All in all games don't get much better, and hardly ever more original(as far as gameplay goes) than this.
verdict: A+

One of the Best of 2002

I make a habit of buying games that I know have replay value, and while I wasn't sold on how well this one would hold up, based on the original Hitman for the PC, I decided to give it a try.

Hitman 2 for the PS2 is easily one of the best games of 2002. Over 17 missions, you are Agent 47, recently reactivated hitman for hire, working for the Agency. The basic story starts in Sicily, where 47 has been working at a church and has befriended a priest in an effort to repent for his many murders and foul deeds. He has found peace, until a local Mafia kingpin kidnaps the kindly priest for a ransome from 47. 47 doesn't take this well, and contacts the Agency, the mysterious organization that gets him his contracts. They offer to help 47 find the padre, for the price of his return to action. And so the game begins.

The story is strong, and the gameplay is immersive and interactive. There is no one correct way to finish a mission. Instead, the game takes a Grand Theaft Auto approach and lets you approach each mission from different angles. You can go in, guns blazing, hoping to get out alive, or you can sneak around, silently killing or incapacitating guards or civilians, taking their clothes, and masquerading to get close to your target. The game rates your level of stealth and you are actually given a higher rating for the fewer non-targets that you kill. For example, the opening mission has you trying to take down the mafia don who kidnapped your friend. If you manage to kill only a few people, you can get a rating of "ninja", if you kill everyone in sight, you get "mass murderer" so you could go either way. Each mission moves you along as you look for your friend and wipe out some very nasty people.

The developer, Eidos, has done a terrific job on the graphics, and the gameplay is relatively simple to master. It utilizes all of the features of the PS2 controller, and while it's best to play around with the controls first to get used to them, once you do, you'll get along fine.

Hitman 2 is an immersive, entertaining, and fun game that gives you multiple options and challenges you to think about how you'll carry out a hit. It's a load of fun, and has a high replay value, as you can try each mission a number of different ways. Don't get the cheat guide for this one, as figuring it out on your own is much more satisfying. Again, one of the best of 2002.

This game is probably the hardest ive ever played, just because you have to ve careful with every step you make and who you shoot, you always have to watch out, cause someone's right there. So if your patient, and you dont mind walkin around some crazy castles and stuff and being hard, then get this game, you get to kill alot of people too, and thats fun. Pax

Well I'm going to be brief and let you know what it's all about. The graphics in Hitman 2 are perfect, but that doesn't regard the game as so. The storyline starts off with a bang, but soon it fades out and you wonder why you are taking part in the missions they give you. The controls are pretty good and so are the A.I. The A.I. aren't stupid but sometimes they'll start shooting at you for no apparent reason and at other times, in the same scenario, they'll just walk on by you. Finally, the gameplay. You can be stealthy and secret as you want in this game, or you can just be a "mass murderer" and kill everyone. The game encourages stealthiness, but they also allow you to be a rampant murderer, and it is too easy killing them while they watch you shoot you. Overall I liked the game, but sometimes it ... me off.

As close to perfect as you can get.

This game blends everything perfectly. You have 2 choices in this game: 1) Go Splinter Cell style and sneak all the way to victory and possibly be rewarded. 2) Go Max Payne style and blast your way to victory and be rewarded with a Mass Murderer rank. Either way, you beat the game.

This game is one of the best on PS2 becasue it can appeal to everyone at any time. Have free time and want to feel like you accomplished something? Steal that guys clothes and spend an hour sneaking into an enemies base to steal some papers he left behind on his desk. Have 5 mins and need to blow off steam? Play the same mission and blast the bad guy with a shotgun as he runs to his car bacause you took out half his bady guard staff. Either way, you win! The game really makes you feel like you have a presence. The way you walk is just like the assassin walks away from the hit in a movie... casual and like nothin' happened. It really makes a difference.

The game is simply awesome. The graphics are smooth and dripping with detail. The sound is amazing: Did that bullet come from MY window? And the level design is all but flawless.

The best part is that after every mission you can return to your charch yard and play with your new toys.

Sure the game isn't perfect, but its the closest thing to perfect, so we gotta settle, for now. The only weak part is the story... like this guy would go on a killing spree after he just said he was gonna change... oh well.

Recemended if you like bloody, gorey firefights. Or peaceful stroles through the park.

(Just look at the cover: How can you say no to a tall, lankey, bald, white guy holding two .45 pistols?)

Annoying but pretty

Yeah, so it's awesome looking and the range of weaponry is exciting but when it comes down to playing the game, it's too annoying to describe. I for one am sick and tired of the agony one goes through to play a game. Some advise to the game developers out there, just cut it out! You develope this awesome game but make it a pain to play...WHY?! I've played some real difficult games as far as controls are concerned, but this is rediculous. Do you want people to enjoy the game or not? You can impose easy controls on a game and still make it difficult you know. What a waste.

THE HITMAN ROCKS...but he's not quite perfect

After wallowing through quite a few mediocre PS2 Titles recently, I am proud to say the Hitman 2 has returned me to the mind-numbing video game addicted junkie I've come to know and love. Hitman 2 is an absolutely fabulous game and I highly recommend this title for mature gamers everywhere. What makes this game such a treat to play is its style, wonderful graphics and excellent gameplay.

Now style is an essential element for any game entitled the "Hitman". If the object of this game was to simply walk around streets and blow away as many people as you could, it would be called "Al-Qaeda". Instead, this is a game that is geared towards making you behave like a Hitman, stealithly moving into the underworld, taking out your target with precision and then blending back into the shadows. When Hitman 2 moves like this, the game is at its most superb.

While excellent graphics have always been a hallmark of the PS2 platform there is truly something special about the scenic artwork in this game. One level which takes place outside an ancient Japanese fortress is terrificly haunting. Even the Indian temple scene, which has drawn so much unfair and underserved criticism for being culturally offensive(You might as well say that the game is offensive to Italians, Russians, Afghanis, the U.N. and Bald people) , is absolutely amazing.

The only drawback to this game is its clumsy shooting mechanism. Perhaps it was the intention of game's designers to make the shooting difficult so that players would focus on the stealth aspects of the game. Shooting on the run is difficult, precision aiming, without the aid of sniper rifle is spotty. I would have preferred a Syphon Filter like shooting control system that has auto-targeting combined with precision head shots. That would really make the full knock down firefights a lot more fun.

Other than that, the game is excellent. Its a must buy, and because there are a wide variety of weapons to collect, in addition to numerous ways to complete the missions, this game has tons of replay value. Get it and you won't be disappointed.

Trial and error

I liked the original Hitman, but this game really disappoints. The majority of missions can only be beat be doing something, dying, then doing something different, etc. Since there are a limited number of saves this requires that you do the same thing over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over ...

That's not a video game. It's a job. Lame.

ANOTHER PIECE OF GARBAGE!

IF YOU WERE BORN WITH 36 FINGERS YOU'LL LOVE THIS GAME. THE KEYBOARD CONTROLS DON'T WORK AND THE FRUSTRATION LEVEL FOR THIS GAME IS OFF THE HOOK. HITMAN CONTRACTS? MAYBE AT THE 99 CENT STORE!
