It just keeps getting better...

I own each of the current-gen consoles for one reason: exclusives. For xbox, it's the Halo series. For Gamecube, it's Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, and (recently) Resident Evil. And for Sony, it's the Metal Gear Solid series. The original MGS was the reason I bought a PlayStation. MGS 2: SoL was the reason I bought a PS2. The Twin Snakes was just another reason to buy a Gamecube. And now I'm here with the greatest game in the series, Snake Eater. This is one of those few games that lives up and often surpasses the hype before it. Snake Eater takes everything you know about the MGS series, and totally mixes it up. No radar anymore, you have to rely on your eyes and ears this time. You better shoot that bird and eat it, because your stamina is getting low. Make sure you're wearing the right camo, because if you get spotted, there is no running to an old area and back to reset the spotted timer. This takes the realism of the series to an all new high. But that's just the beginning.

Any MGS fan will tell you they play the game for the cinematic style the game possesses. Yes, you will still sit through 10 minute cut scenes, but that's part of the beauty of the game. It immerses you into the world instead of over it. Kojima and co. have definitely done it this time with the story, as well. If you don't feel SOMETHING at the end of this game, there is definitely something wrong with you.

Another wonderful aspect of the MGS series is the bosses. You will experience everything from invisible tree leaping bosses to (possibly) an hour long sniper battle that covers various areas of the game. And the final battle is perhaps one of the most memorable, not to mention beautiful final boss battles. Ever.

If you call yourself a MGS fan, you need to own this game.

I own the first Metal Gear Solid and the second. I bought this game the day after it came out. I loved the jungle scene and catching food. I played through the game and just thought it was amazing. The graphics are beautiful and the story is awsome I think this is the greatest ps2 game ever.

Best game ever

If you like metal gear solid and metal gear solid 2 sons of liberty, metal gear solid 3 snake eater will be right up your alley. I wont spoil anything, the game is now set in the 60's so it is unknow if you are playing as big boss (snake's dad) or as snake himself somehow. Instead of starting the game right on a base, you start very far away and you are alone in the jungle, you now need to survive. Snake can starve, break bones, and get sick. The AI of the enemies is much better. This is suppose to be the last metal gear solid game. This is now my favorite game series by far! 10 out of 10!

Great sequel, but.....

Firstly, I need to point out that in terms of story, visual presentation, and the shear amount of detail found in the this game is extrodinary and lives up to the strong tradition set out by the previous Metal Gear games.
The only question I have is whether anyone else has experienced any "stuttering" in the video and especially interruption in the sound during the radio transmission sequences. Thus far I have gone through two games (from exchanging) and experienced problems. The same thing has occurred to others who I know who have purchased the game.
Small flaws to be sure, but nonetheless if this is a bug on Konami's part I have to give out an overall score of 4 out of 5 until I find out otherwise....

A good game, but not the best story as previous Metal Gears

I liked MGS3. I liked it for it's unique gameplay and especially for it's amazing graphics. What I did have a problem with was the story. While it is interesting to see Big Boss in his youth, the overall message and theme that were in the last two games is not really present in this game. And even though most people hated Raiden in MGS2, the lesson and theme at the end of (Metal Gear Solid 2)MGS2 was more complete, "Building a future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing." I think Kojima fell a little short this round, I think he catered too much to hardcore Metal Gear fans bitching about how much they hated Raiden. So if you are one of those hardcore fans and buy this game, and find the story lacking, blame yourself. Kojima said MGS2 was to be the last game in the series. But no, you guys wanted more. Don't get me wrong, MGS3 has a great story, but not a really clear message that I think is enough to close the series peacefully. I still give the game high props for graphics, controls (though the camera felt a bit spazzy)and for overall presentation. If you like hardcore action, guns blazing and a simple plot, buy MGS3. If you like an intersting, involving story with philosoophy and life lessons, buy MGS2.

wow, they managed to fit ape escape in here

i work at the local gamestop, and i was originally just going to take this game home to try it and see what its like. from the openning cut scene i was in love. the graphics are incredible for such a large game. i love how you can change costumes and face paint for better camoflage. the weapons kick major tail, the characters are just the right amount campy and not annoying, and the fact you actually have to hunt for survival is awesome, and it is pulled off very well. the biggest surprise of this game was the inclusion of an ape escape mini game. you get a gun called the monkey spanker and you have to capture a certain amount of monkeys. and the best part is they are the actual monkeys from ape escape.

this is a great stealth game, and its not as restrictive as splinter cell. definatly a great game to get for the holidays.

Great game in the series

This is my favorite Metal Gear game. Snake fights very well. Snake is much more skilled in this game with hand-to-hand combat than the earlier Metal Gear games. He can quickly and easily take out many enemies with simple hand-to-hand combat techniques. The different difficulty levels make a big difference for an increased challenge. However, the game Metal Gear Subsistence is the better pick over this game. It is the same game but more advanced. The graphics are more advanced than Snake Eater. The game also includes more scenarios than Snake Eater such as Sneaking Mission, Team Death Match, Death Match Battle, Capture Mission, and Cargo Rescue.

great in every aspect

playing as "naked snake" (the future big boss) you must destroy the "shagohod" (a nuke-launching tank) in the way you find many references to the other metal gear games, for example, when your talking to granin (a character you'll find during the game) he shows you plans for a bipod tank, metal gear REX.

the story passes around 1960-80 (time unknown for me), in the middle of the cold war, in sovietic territory...
it all starts with the kidnapping of a russian scientist currently working for the U.S.A.
near the end of his extraction, he shows you the shagohod, in test fase, then is taken back as captive by snake's mentor (the boss) and her gorup know as the cobras, formed by: the pain (controls hornets), the fear (kinda half lizard), the end (perfect but over 100 years old sniper) and the fury ("controls" fire).

during the game you may notice the day and night passage, that not only changes the appearance of the place, as it also changes the animals the you may find and eat.

another unique thing is the cammoflage rating, you may change the face paint and the cammo the snake wears, permiting you to beecome harder to see for your enemys, and some cammos even give you special abillitys, for an instance; the fire cammo stops you from getting burned and reduces fire damage.

in this game there is a unique thing that the damage your character takes may continue to damage you later, let's say... you get shot, sometimes the bullet will stay in your body and reduce the max life you can have, you must remove it, there are instruments for every type of wound; like there is oinment for burns, splints for broken bones and cigars for leeches

other thing the the stamina, the more you run, jump, or even stand you loose stamina, wich can be recoverd by eating collectd animals (there are few plants to eat, sorry vegans)

just to top it off, it's a great game, for every one (exept vegans and budists) A MUST HAVE

Tactical Espionage Action. I call it, Simply Amazing!

Ah the Metal Gear Solid series. Many know about it, many play it. It is a staple in videogames. Some say that the original Metal Gear Solid revolutionized the way videogames are viewed. Here is the third in this amazing series and though I beat it well over a year ago, here is my review.

In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, rival nations are secretly developing weapons that could threaten the future of mankind. Deep in the jungle, an elite tactical soldier must combine stealth with survival to infiltrate the enemy and stop a weapon of mass destruction from triggering the largest full-scale war the world has ever seen. The game is set in a sweltering jungle where players must fight for survival by battling relentless natural elements, as well as an onslaught of ruthless enemy soldiers. In my opinion, the story is the best aspect of the game. It is such an amazing, emotional rollercoaster ride that does not let up till the credits are completely over. I mean, this game takes real events and interweaves its own fictional story through them while keeping all the events true to history (it takes place in 1964 as most of you well know). The characters in this game are just simply amazing. They feel like real people. Throughout the game you come to care about these characters, more so than in any other videogames I've ever seen. Without spoiling anything for those who haven't played this yet (shame on you) at the end of the game at the last boss battle there is this one character who you just want to kill. They have been nothing but a pain and all you want to do at that point is kill them. But, in true Kojima fashion, the battle doesn't start right away. No no, that character gives a speech. A speech that makes you literally, no lie here, go from hating them to realizing how awesome and great of a person/character they are and not want to kill them. And when you finally do kill them, it tears you up inside. Of course, through the end cut scene (which in my opinion is the best ending and cut scene ever in a videogame) you learn more about this character and why they did what they did and you care even more about them, even though they are dead. And the final shot in the game is a tearjerker. If you care about these characters, feel for them what they had to go through and were wrapped up in the story, you probably will cry. I did and it's just that good. That's a testament to the brilliance of Kojima. He can make you care about a character that isn't even real.

The graphics in this game are just phenomenal. Everything is richly textured and is stunning to look at. The character models are gorgeous. Especially the facial expressions, those are damn impressive. Everything is extremely fluid in the way things move; the mo-cap was used very well in the creation of this game. Everyone moves so lifelike, it is scary sometimes cause you actually feel like these are real people. All the environments look realistic, like they could exist in real life and vary in each section you go to. You never once feel like "I was just through here!" (Unless you in fact do go back in that area).

The sound is simply amazing as well. The score by Harry-Gregson Williams is extremely powerful and riveting. The music is very catchy and goes absolutely perfect with the game. I myself enjoyed the Theme Song a lot, it was a nice play on the 007 themes and is actually a cool song, it's on my iPod. The sound effects in are second to none. The guns sound like they should and the environmental sounds are just great. More than once you'll just stop and listen to the sounds of the jungle. And if you play it with surround sounds, you actually feel like you are there. All the animals sound realistic as well. The voice acting is superb as usual. As always, it's a huge leap above other games. David Hayter returns as Snake and does a superb job as always. Suzetta Mi?et is EVA and is good too. Jim Piddock voices Major Zero and is fantastic. Neil Ross and Josh Keaton play Volgin and Ocelot, respectively and Gregg Berger, Michael Bell, J. Grant Albrecht, Richard Doyle and David Thomas (no, not the Wendy's guy) voice the bosses The Pain, The Fear, The End, The Fury and The Sorrow, all respectively of course). A standout though is Lori Alan who voices The Boss. She adds something to the character. Something tough to put into words. If you play it you'll know. She does an exceptional job. The script is very tight and extremely well written with great dialogue and the amazing quotes are still here.

The gameplay is smooth and responsive. It controls nicely and the new features are cool. CQC is a blast to use. There are many different things you can do to the enemies. The camouflage works well and is fun to use. The survival aspect never gets in the way and adds another fun challenge and angle to this game.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the best game I have ever played. Period. It is a true masterpiece and honestly, I can only hope Guns of The Patriots annihilates it because if you can improve on MGS3, then you have one hell of a game. This game is nothing short of a masterpiece.

STUNNING! BEAUTIFUL! INCREDIBLE! FREAKY! ROMANTIC!

Oh my God. What words can I use to describe how amazing this game was. Snake is back in his most exciting adventure. His mission is to rescue this wierd dude called Sokolov who is forced to work on an evil hunk of junk called a Shagohod. He also has to eliminate his mentor, the legendary hero, The Boss after she defected to the Soviet Union.

Snake also gets his feelings all in a jumble after meating Eva, a beautiful KGB spy and falls in love with her. This really surprised me; I never knew this game would have romance in it!

The Bosses were totally wicked! The Boss was really cool, with her black cape and pure white suit. The Pain was a real pain in the ass, but has a really evil army of hornets who attack you on contact! The Fear was REALLY REALLY cool, with his huge tongue and easy-to-dislocate elbows. The End was totally freaky with his terrifying eyes but cool photosynthetic life. The Fury was pretty menacing with his kick-ass flame thrower and cool astronaut suit!
And of course, Volgin who evilly but cooly beat the [...] out of poor Snake.

Animation- 10/10 Stunning. Rich. Beautiful! Amazingly realistic!

Storyline- 9/10 Extremely powerful! Snake's amazing adventure through the jungle as he encounters some extreme Bosses, enters many life and death situations and learns to deeply love the beautiful Eva who inevitably loves him back.

Music/Songs- 10/10 The music was excellent and heartstopping.
The opening song Snake Eater is INCREDIBLE! The best song in the world! I can't stop singing it. It's from Eva and dedicated to her one true love, Snake. I am not able to stop singing it in the shower. How funny is that!!!!
I also loved the song Don't Be Afraid to Love Again which is played on the radio when Snake and Eva share a moment.....err...let's just say having a hell of a romantic time!!!

The most incredible game I've ever played. A sweeping story that will lead you into a whole new world of gaming. Play it NOW!!!
