Eat Blaster, Space Scum!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 7 / 9

This is a perfect example of not being able to judge a book by its cover. This game is so great! It is probably one of the best games I've seen yet for the PS2!

Ratchet is a wisecracking spaceship repairman living on some backwater until he is enlisted to save the universe from the evil Blarg. Simple story, lots of fun!

Cool features:
-Huge world! You explore seemingly endless planets and nooks and crannies. Everything is interactive, allowing you to run on, jump up on and blow up just about everything.

-Weapons: There are lots. I'm not totally through the game, but there are TONS! Pretty much every level has something or two and different weapons open up more levels. I think this is what makes R & C stand out from other platform games.

-Great animation & writing. The game is very well put together. The characters are strong. The voiceovers are good and voices match up with the characters' mouths. Most importantly, I find them interesting. I usually fast forward (if I can) through [bad] voiceovers in games.

-Family and adult oriented I first played this game over at my 11 year old cousin's house. I got very into it, very quickly. It really does have cross age appeal.

- FUN! One of the most simply fun games I've played in years!

Overall I recommend this game to all with no reservations.

Infectious, Addictive, and Just Plain Fun.

I can't add much to what the other reviewers have said, so let me tell you about my experience with the game.

First of all, right from the start, you can see the influence that the classic cartoons of the 40s & 50s had on the designers: it all comes off like a playable version of a Duck Dodgers cartoon, with the same thrilling, thorough design sense, the same goofball sense of humor, and the same utter disrespect of pretty much everything. Nothing is sacred in this story, particularly not Capitalism--there's actually something of a subtle, socio-satirical bent to the storyline.

The gameplay is magnificent, with each world you travel to loading in its entirety during the "planet-hopping" animated sequences. This means that once you land on the world, the wait time is non-existent. This is thanks in large part to the Naughty Dog engine--the one that Jak & Daxter was based on--which Insomniac employed in creating this game.

In fact by look and feel, this game plays very much like J&D, but is funnier, grittier, less frustrating, and more satisfying.

One of the wonderful features in the game (and there are many) is that you have tons of options for wiping out the enemies (and there are many). What that means is that those of us who lack something in the platform-game-skills department have many, many options for taking out the nasties. Early in the game, I became quite enamored with the Glove of Doom and its ability to take out small groups of enemies while I stood back, completely out of danger, and watched. Later in the game, after much scrimping and saving, I purchased the R.Y.N.O. and suddenly found there wasn't a single level that could hold me back. (Insert evil laugh here.)

What I love best about this game, though, is that it's the first platformer that I beat entirely by myself...almost. There are two hoverboard matches in the game, one of which I finally managed to beat, and one of which I required the help of a Tony-Hawk-playing friend to conquer. (I'm working on taking that one out so I don't have to say I beat this game ALMOST all by myself.)

Each level features new challenges and multiple ways to beat them. One of the nice features in the game is the inclusion of Skill Points, which challenge you to explore the levels in their entirety and, sometimes, to prove your mettle by NOT doing things the easy way. (On Veldin, for example, beating 10 commandos with your wrench alone--not an easy task--nets you a skill point.)

Well worth playing and even watching someone play, but I warn against replaying it from the beginning (as opposed to a repeat play after you've beaten the game), since all the nice things you're accustomed to having are just...gone.

Why is this a big deal? Well, just when you're getting tired of running around collecting all those bolts, the game gives you a "bolt attractor"--a magnetic belt-clip that pulls in the bolts from much farther away. When I went back and started a brand new game, I began to get a bit annoyed with the bolt-collecting and the high prices.

Great game, though. Don't miss out on this one if you enjoy fun games--it's never so hard that you'll give up on it (except maybe those darned hoverboard races).

Hands Down, the Best Platform Game Available

"Ratchet & Clank" is fun and innovative. The graphics are outstanding, and the gameplay impeccable. This game has some of the best voiceovers I've ever heard, and the humor is just cheesy enough that it is clear that the designers knew they were being cheesy and decided to ham things up when possible. I was very impressed with how easy it is to interact with the environment, and the weapons were creative and unique. So long to the days of jumping on the enemy's head to destroy it, with an arsenal of 30+ weapons, "Ratchet & Clank" finally brings platform gaming into the new millennium. Each weapon adds its own exciting twist to gameplay. "Ratchet & Clank" builds on past successes in the platform genre and then runs off into a one-of-a-kind world with a gaming experience like no other I know. A wonderful game for all ages, and one that will hopefully inspire families to play together.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this game 5 stars is the fact that you are forced to replay each level again and again and again in order to get enough bolts (money) to buy all the upgraded weapons-- which is itself a requirement for unlocking all the "goodies" available after beating the final boss. Also, a strategy guide is pretty much required if one wants to understand and beat the secret challenges that open up other "goodies." Game designers just don't seem to understand that many of the people who play their games do so as occasional recreation, and that it is disheartening and frustrating to reach the end of a game only to find that some of the best special features are not available to us simply because we don't have the time to replay the same game multiple times. If the game costs the same for part-timers as it does for hard-core gamers, then we deserve the same complete gaming experience as do those whose primary hobby is video game playing. And no one should have to spend extra money to buy a strategy guide for a game like "Ratchet & Clank" simply because the designers refuse to put any type of clues at all regarding certain "missions" into the game itself.

Put down that Turkey Leg

Time to forget about the Turkey. Forget about the Football game.
Thanksgiving was spent playing a rented Ratchet and Clank disc. From the get-go, the game was great. No naps after the turkey, back into the game....and played until sun down. There are not enough hours in the day to play this awesome game (played with a friend taking turns Friday and Saturday). It is by far the best platformer that I have played. Multiple levels, hidden objects, weapons galore (buy weapons with collected nuts and bolts at special "stores"). Shoot all kinds of stuff, even what I thought were space ships just for a cool look, shoot them for skill points.
Flying via Clanks upgrade to a Helicopter pack. Use a weapon that sucks water out of a holding tank. Leave mines. Don't forget the hidden gold bolts. Use them later to upgrade all of your weapons to more powerful ones. Can't believe this game. Go out and get you some!!! I did. Put one in your cart now!!

What a Game~!

Ratchet and Clank rocks! The graphics are great and so is the gameplay! This game has the best effects I've seen on a platformer since Jak and Daxter! It's weapons are soooooooo cool

Ratchet & Clank is a perfect mix of action, adventure, and RPG-like micromanagement. The quest is long and difficult, unlike the overrated Jak & Daxter. The graphics far surpass what I had thought the PS2 was capable of.

A must buy for the PS2!

This game is great abosutley great! Although rachet and clank 2 is better this is just as good! This game has lots of weapons and 10 of them can be upgraded into gold weapons with fancy special abilities. Like the gold morp-o-ray turns enemys into giant explodeing chickens. This game really shouldnt have a T rateing its just the fact theres guns in it (theres no blood or other gross things) The characters voices are done good and the chracters are devolped good and the graphics are great. The sound is not messed up and when you shoot it makes the right sound and when you hit something it makes the right sound you dont just here some gun shoot from no where at all. The levels are detailed and will take a while to find every thing in. Theres well hidden gold bolts that arent to hard to find but sometimes difficult to get. The diffuclty of the game is good its challengeing but not ever to hard to get through. Its has little replay value except to go through it again to get all the skill points. You get to control more than rachet as well. You can control just clank, and the destructive giant clank! The giant clank is neat as you can destroy walls and giant enemys and shoot missles! All in all it has almost no flaws and s a must buy!

This game is good, but easy.

Pros
All of the weapons are creative and fun to use.
It has a good story line.
They have clever obticals to go through.
The monsters are cool looking.
They infobot videos are funny so you won't get too bored playing the game.

Cons
Everything is very easy to do.
When clank commands the little robots you can't call them from very far away, so if one of them dies you have to go all the way back to the beginning to find them.
It is hard to get bolts because there are no arena battles for money, you have to destroy boxes and kill enemies and that takes a while.
Hover boarding is a little tedious, annoying and hard to win.
Overall this game is very good, but sometime gets frustrating and
I would say this game is about as good as the next Rachet and Clank game.

old but great

This game is one of the best games in my collection. Its fun and easy to learn, the controls are simple, there is a wide eray of weapons one of them being a gun that turns guys into chickens:).Another thing I like about this game is that you can play it over and over again i have had my ps2 for three or four years and this was the first game we got, every year or so ill dig it out of my collection of games and beat it a couple times. It's a great game for younger gamers its not that hard to understand and most of the puzzles are easy enough. I have'nt tried any of the other ratchet and clank games. I just never got around to it because this game had such a high replay value. Trust me if you are looking for a good cheap platform game this is the one.

A FUN AND UNIQUE ADVENTURE

Different worlds, different weapons, different enemies and all fun. This was the first game that was purchased for me after I got PS2 for Christmas.
I am totally hooked on this game.
For the most part the levels are fairly easy to get through.
Ratchet, the fox I think, finds this little orphaned (by choice) robot and they roam the galaxy searching and trying to stop Drex (sp). Drex is going from planet to planet to find the perfect planet to call his own (or so we think). Ratchet goes to each level trying to find different weapons (some are not free) and different gadgets to help him along his way. To buy certain weapons and ammo, he must gather nuts and bolts. The two ways to gather this stuff is to destroy wooden crates found through out the planets or destroy enemies. Also your health can be restored by breaking the boxes that contain the glowing orbs of blue/white.
At certain points Clank can get upgraded. First he starts out just as a robot stuck to Ratchet's back. Then you can upgrade him (at a price) to a heli-pack, a jet pack or an aqua pack. On one planet Clank can turn into a giant.
Some levels are not as easy to get through. It took me at least 20 tries to swim through a certain level. You can also collect gold bolts. These are used to purchased golden weapons.
There are races, space fights and some big baddies to destroy.
Overall this is a fun and exciting game to play.

Ratchet&Clank measures up to Jak and Daxter, & then some..

I wrote in my Jak and Daxter review that that game would be the one that all the others would have to meet up to, in terms of graphics and gameplay. Well, I can honestly say, I think they've met their match. Graphically, Ratchet and Clank is a sight to behold. Everything is done in such a high-rez detail. You can see buildings way out in the distance, spaceships zooming overhead, it's brilliant. Gameplay is another matter, entirely, in that it throws a curve ball on the platforming thing. Instead of your character having powers to dispose of its' enemies, you have bombs and guns. Everything from plot to presentation to control and gameplay, this game raises the bar and then some. This isn't something you'd expect from the creators of all the Spyro games on the PSone, at all. I mean, you'd expect to see some type of something to remind you of Spyro but, no, not here.
Ratchet&Clank is definitely a brilliant addition to the Platforming genre. I tip my hat to Insominiac for such a great game.
