Warning for those considering Everquest

I have been an active player of EQ for 2 years. The game is alot of fun and very addictive. However, I, along with many others, was forced to leave EQ due to the requirements for the newest expansion. I simply wasn't going to spend alot of money to upgrade my computer for a simple game.
I would like to warn those of you who have yet to buy EQ and are considering making the purchase. Although it is alot of fun, I simply wouldn't get involved with it. The game is very time consumming, plus Verant Interactive's customer support is pretty much non existant. The company has become very arrogant after EQ became one of the top selling computer games on the market and they constantly ignore customer inquiries. I have e-mailed their customer support at least 5 times during the 2 years I played to get help with different problems I experienced with EQ and NEVER received any response. I have worked in customer service for 6 years and if I was to treat my customers the way Verant does theirs, I would have been canned. Once they get their customers addicted, they know they'll find it hard to leave, so therefore they pretty much blow you off.
So if you are thinking about buying EQ, I strongly recommend you reconsider. If I can save someone from getting addicted to EQ, then I've pretty much done my good deed for the day.

Nice addition, has bugs but VI will work them out.

My luck may not be in with Luclin

I have not bought this game expansion, and will not do so, until the bugs introduced have addressed.

Somehow, the introduction of the new expansion for Everquest has created many bugs with graphics and sound in the original game, without even installion of the expansion.

These render the game unplayable for me, but as this is a subscription based service, I still have to pay for time I cannot use. My PC is up to spec even for the new expansion, with Win2k, Geforce, SB Live, 512 MB RAM - anyone with a spec lower than this be warned!

Also Windows 95 is no longer supported, yet boxes of the original game and expansion are still on sale with W95 stated as supported.

Be sure to check the forums on the official Everquest web site for current technical issues before purchasing this or any Everquest based product.

If you have the computing power, SoL is a very nice addition. However, it's not enough to say to those whose PC's aren't up to par, "UPGRADE OR DON'T BUY IT," as SoL has greatly compromised the quality of old-world gameplay, without SoL, on systems that are otherwise in good shape.

Before SoL, I had 128MB of RAM and a TNT2 32MB Graphics Card on a PentIII 550 computer. After SoL went live, I found many of the old world zones to be way too laggy for me and I on occasion crashed in-game. The thought of expanding to SoL was unthinkable.

I went ahead and added 256MB RAM and a new GeForce2 64MB Graphics Card. I'm able to run SoL now and the old world--even retextured--zones run great. I certainly enjoy giving my characters a face lift, too. But the land of Luclin? Forget it! Verant has lots of work to do. It's a laggy mess up there.

We all know Verant ca$hed in on this one. I'm upset with the way they went about it, but I still love playing EQ and will continue to do so.

Overall, 3 2/3 stars.

Well,Luclin is very good, dont get me wrong, but, because we have 2 EQ players in the house,Me and one other,i am usually stuck on the slow PC (its in my room) and Luclin is very choppy on it,i have timed about 5 seconds lag before i can move again after moving once, especially turning round, and near groups of PC's or NPC's,and i cant get the new graphics until i upgrade my RAM.On the downstairs computer (the good one) Luclin is great!,i got the graphics, minimal lag and a whole moon to work with.I love Everquest, but i think there should be more options to dumb down the graphics and such for us slower players, thats just my 2cp to anyone buying, and to Verant if they decide to read this, (P.S Kunark is the best expansion to date)

After you install the game log into your ISP and be prepared for a long patching download. But its worth it :)

You will NOT get bored

I have tried DAoC and Anarchy Online, I eventually got bored with both, however, with Everquest, I have played since it went live several years ago and STILL not bored. They are forever adding expansions and revising so it is constantly fresh content. I have several of the highest level characters you can get and just make more so I can stay active and enjoy all levels of the play. SO VERY realistic.

Game Bugs + Major LAG + Poor Customer Service = GAMEOVER

I've had a love-hate relationship with this game for 10 months. EQ's depth is UNPARELLED! However, it's PLAYABILITY has already been SURPASSED by other MMPOGs.

Basically,

1. Numerous bugs: All games have bugs, but EQ's are excessive due to lack of testing by developers. This lack of testing is most likely due to VI's rush to meet SoL's scheduled release date.

2. LAG: If a 1Ghz, 1GB RAM, 64MB video card, and a cable modem can't run an MMPOG well, then something's not right with the code (refer to 1).

3. CS: Nonexistent. GL my friend on getting any help from VI.

EXACTLY WHY I QUIT: My 55 Warrior was running thru Grimling Forest (with T-boots) heading towards Hollowshade Moor (I was the only one in zone). I had 2 bubs of health left. No sweat, since this zone is well below my level. Accidentally agro'd a single lite-blue grimling (of all the luck, one of the highest in the zone). I should easily be able to run away right (got T-boots)? WRONG! I encountered such severe LAG when the grimling got near me that he was able to beat the life out of me within two-three minutes. I am talking PEANUT BUTTER LAG! In summary, this little death was the final blow amongst numerous others that severed my relationship with this game. It just didn't seem worth it to try to do a CR, get a REZ, and then try to regain lost EXP. This game is good but NOT that good.

Now I play DAoC. If I die in DAoC, I laugh. DAoC makes EQ look like work!...

I bought this game within the first week it was out and was so excited to try it I could hardly wait for stores to restock their shelves before I was able to get a copy....... then reality struck.

I had 386 with plenty of free space and their other recommendations met and still had lag galore forever. I couldnt play on the moon for a long time and all I kept hearing from verant was "reinstall your vid card".... so I did, several times, using their link from their website. I also was told to reinstall all my expansions (which wipes out ur custom buttons btw). Not a good idea. Eventually figured to try reinstalling the vid card from manufacturers site and that did the trick for the most part but still had to get the full 512 for it to run better. It says min requirements 250 but dont believe it.

As much as I love EQ I have never seen any other game with 512 needed for proper gameplay.. and it still had problems. Now several patches later things are smoothed out a ton but I dont believe they even spent 6 mths in beta testing.

The game itself is phenomonal. Brillant colors and textures with wonderfully improves graphics for the char models. More options for personallizing your chars but I still think that for 512 we should have had more options. Many of the male chars, esspecially, still look all alike in the face.

I am still an EQ addict but I tell you my confidence is wavering about the next expansion unless it is a step back to fix things and just offer more options.

All I can say is wow! Verant has done a great job with the new expansion to EQ, the new player models are amazingly eye-candyish. I was starting to get a little bored with the original eq graphics engine, ie. where there can be 10 different bp's that look exactly the same. No more! They actually have there own style now, yay! Along with just about everything else in Luclin. My pally looks extra ubber now, cuz he is =)

Now I can actually see paying the extra 3 bux a month for it, seeing has how there is a great new area to explore, and more great terrain to rome around in.

On the technical side of things, I didnt really notice a problem in the required specs, maybe if I had an older computer then I would be a little leary. XP 1800, 1 gig of ram, and a rusty old GeForce 2 MX 400 does the trick in luclin, I never notice a signifcant drop in fps playing a 1024x768.

If you are an avid EQ player, then i HIGHLY recommend that you purchase this is expansion, it is definately worth the [money].

Side note: If you play EQ on the Mithaniel Marr server, msg me sometime and we will go raid or quest or something =) My name is Kitheril Rengate.
