Great RPG

Before Evolution, I had never played an RPG (I played Zelda, but that's not a true RPG). I wasn't sure whether or not to get this game, but it was recommended to me. I'm glad I bought it. It's a very fun game that's so addictive it's hard to turn off. Because of this, I'll be buying more RPGs. Great game for RPG beginners.

Good first attempt

Many people may not rate this accordingly because they are comparing this to the FF series and guess what you can't. This is a dungeon based RPG not a story line based RPG like FFVIII. I like it because it kinda makes you laugh at what happens to the characters. The attack learning system is something totally new and it requires you to save those new powerful attacks for bosses. The enemies are unique and the bosses are well bosses. I can only hope this is a preview of what the Dreamcast can really do.

Great RPG!!

I dont have much to say except that this game is one of the best RPGs I have ever played. I love the fighting style and even though there isn't much of a storyline, its still a great game. I recommend this to anyone who likes exploring dungeons, and likes a non-stressful combat style.

I don't care what any reviewer says!

This game is sweet, it has awsome graphics, interesting story, and best of all, cool game play. The battle system is awsome and no random battles! I find the gameplay really fun, i highly recommend this game, its only 10 bucks!

Better than average RPG

Evolution was the first role playing game released for the now defunct Sega Dreamcast. Unlike many role playing games, this one can be completed in a relatively short amount of time (16 hrs vs 50+ for many RPGs). While the game has its high points, a number of low points exist as well.

The high points include better than average graphics, a decent storyline, and a wide variety of options available during the battle scenes. Normally the graphics of games released early for systems tend to be average at best. For the most part, this is not true, especially with the "cut scenes". The storyline is above average, but it is nothing compared to the Final Fantasy series' storylines. The battle scenes offer the player a variety of options when using technique points. Some of these options are offensive, some are defensive, and others are simply for laughs (Gre's food offerings to the enemies, for example).

The low points include boring, monotonous dungeons and a weak "big boss". The dungeons, which are randomly generated each time they are entered, are very drab and has the look and feel of some of the dungeon trawling from some of the RPGs available on Sega's Genesis system. Some dungeons contain one or two groups of monsters, whereas others have 20+. The player never knows until they enter the dungeon level. The "big boss" is somewhat difficult to beat the second time, but the character itself is a weasel-like nerd who is obsessed with learning the secrets of Linear, the blonde female character in the game.

Overall, the game is worth playing. Its level of difficulty is fairly low with only the dungeon bosses providing much in the way of obstacles. If you can handle the repetitious dungeons and like shorter RPGs, Evolution would be a good one to play.

Pure Brilliance!

My friend got this game one day, and we took turns playing it. While my friend was playing, I got the idea that it was a pretty good game, but probably all looks (those graphics, wow). But then I played it, and my mind just went to a different place. It was just too amazing. I started noticing all the awesome features and attacks, and all of it was just a truley awesome experiance. Needless to say I bought it the next morning!

Maybe for the new

Great graphics, but I draw the line there. Ridiculously repetitive gameplay that never goes anywhere, not to mention a drab storyline. Beautiful characters, ruined by their inane comments. I wouldn't recommend it, but you can rent it if you're not sure.

Too many bad things marring great potential

I really wanted to like this game. I really did. I love RPG's! So I jumped at the chance to play a Dreamcast RPG. I was horribly disappointed. While the storyline is good (not great but good), the game goes by WAY TOO FAST! I hadn't played it for more than 10-12 hours and I was already at the end of the game! The end boss was too difficult at the time so I checked out an online walkthrough and found out that to really play through the game, you need to go back into the same dungeons without beating them multiple times to get better items and save up enough money to improve your equipment. It's tedium at best mind-numbing at worst.

The random dungeon feature was nice and kept things relatively fresh... but it got old quick. It was nice to be able to see the monsters too. Rather than random battles you could initiate whenever you wanted. Approach them from the rear and you strike first. Vice versa, then you get hit first. You can also sneak by monsters if you want.

The game is pretty, but it needed more. All-in-all, a disheartening start to the Dreamcast RPGs.

Nice graphics, slow play

Don't play Evolution if you liked Final Fantasy VII's character development. Not only is the story line weak but the actual strength of the characters in this RPG grows on a very slow curve. In other RPGs I've played the characters have a burst of strength give by some newly discovered item or ability. In Evolution, you never feel that your character is powerful enough. The stock enemies develop with you at such a rate that you can never flex your newfound muscle and mop them up. I found this to be rather frustrating at times since you encounter the same enemies over and over again. And the bosses are pathetic. If you have Pepper along, her most powerful move is enough to dispatch a boss in one shot. The very last enemy was the only one that even killed one of my characters, let alone all of them. The risks in this RPG were never great and consequentially neither were the rewards. Nice battle engine, but the monsters were so boring that it was like using a Ferrari to drive to the supermarket.

As a "True" RPgamer....

I grew up on games like Phantacy StarI II and III, Dragon Warrior 1-4, Final fantacy 1-7 (so far), in addition to Online games Like EverQuest and Diablo. All I can say is this game would be good ONLY if it is to introduce you to the VAST world of RPGs. even that is a long shot though. the game consists of random mazes with a few scattered traps and treasures. Like Diablo there is no set map of any given level ... I do not like that. levels are gained fairly easily and there is no real challenge to it. I know this is a rather sketchy review of the product. All in all I would only recomend this game to someone 12 or under or someone who is trying to learn the inns and outs of the RPG genre.
