When i first saw the ads for Madden 2002, i like everyone else, was very pumped about it and couldn`t wait to play. Well i`ve had the game for a few months and i have mixed feelings about. I think it`s much better visually than the previous Madden games, but it has some major flaws that makes the game a disappointment like the difficulty with the passing game and the apparent lack of speed. I`m very disappointed that EA Sports would allow these flaws to be on the final product. Hopefully they`ll fix these problems for Madden 2003.

Awesome!

Madden 2002 is a awesome game! It has really good graphics and has awesome gameplay. You can start a francise, season or a lot of other cool stuff. You can even create a team. You can create, edit, release, delete, and sign in free agents to your rosters. The players, stadiums, coaches, and refs look real ,but the crowd, camera men, and stuff like that could use some work.
When you create a team you can pick team name, logos, city and state, stadiums, and uniforms. In the a game is the best part. Passing and running are harder to do than previous Madden games because of better pass and run defence. The refs look real and you can challenge plays. The only bad part is that you can't challenge a play after watching an instant replay. The game is fun and is really like a NFL game. Before you buy this game I suggest you rent it first, just incase you don't like it. But I think you'll like it because I love it and it is an awesome game!

Maybe 3 and a half stars

Here's what went wrong! Loved Madden 2002, except for the AI for the defense when you were on offense. I tried playing on rookie mode, but that was too easy, so I cranked it up on All-Madden. Still nothing. So I started to mess around with the COMP AI on the settings slider. You can't find a decent setting. Set it too high and good luck, you will never win a game. Set it too low, and you will win every Super Bowl. When I'm on offense, I am sacked every 10 or so passes. No matter who I have as my OL, I'm still sacked. As for when you pass, you will never burn a DB in the way that the computer burns you, which is every other play. I try to run and I get 2 or 3 yrds. I don't understand this game. I thought that the game was to be evened out. You can't stop the computer's pass plays. They just run by your defenders every time. I played Chicago as the Carolina Panthers with a created QB in Franchise mode and was outgained by Chris Miller. Also, you can't sack the QB unless it's by accident. The AI for the computer has the Great Wall Of China as an offensive line. A good buy for those that love to beat the computer 50-21. For the rest of you, we might have to wait for next years game to get better. Since AI is almost the most important part of the game, that is why I rated it so low.

5 Stars on everything except...

This game is of course awesome because... well, it's Madden! Madden football games have always been the best (except '94 & '95 on SNES). Madden 2k2 has the best graphics, decent gameplay, franchise mode is the best, but the biggest problem with this and every other Madden on PS and PS2 is the passing.

The passing is extremely difficult on every level except rookie. Even as the all-Madden team playing an NFL Europe team, my best receivers could NEVER burn their d-backs which had pathetic ratings of 66 or lower. If there is a defender within 5 yards of the receiver and the receiver makes the catch, HE WILL DROP IT!!! About 90% of the time to be exact. Even if he catches it and moves upfield (which is more of a fumble), he WILL be hit and the ball pops out. It doesn't matter what reciever (Rice, Keyshawn, Rod Smith) anyone and everyone drops the ball nearly everytime they are hit.

Also the computer can be shut down for 99% of the game, but then at random cannot be stopped no matter what you do. They simply run right through any defense you throw at it. The computer seems to cheat on many other occasions with crappy recievers that can burn all-pro corners and so on.

Anyway, it's still good, but I much prefer the college game by EA sports.

Good action, but too many glitches to give a better review

I'm really trying to figure out if all of the "5 star" reviewers have actually played this game, or if this is their first football game.

I've had the game for a while, and have played 2 full seasons with it, one of which I took the Giants through an undefeated season to win the Superbowl.

One of my main complaints is the way the computer will cheat. I know EA tries to claim how realistic the game is, and it is pretty realistic. Your team is goverened by the laws of physics, the computer isn't.

If the computer needs a touchdown you'll see see a crummy tight end diving 10+ yards to catch a tipped pass, then get up, break 4 tackles, and run 45 yards (outrunning my secondary) for the score.

Defensive tackles and nose guards will run down the fastest running back as he heads to the flats with the ball. Blitzing safeties and cornerbacks will knock over a 300 lb offensive lineman like a rag doll. I've yet to see any team I've played with pick up the blitz in a decent way, while your blitzes are usually picked up and exploited.

Why bother witht he cointoss? Out of 50 games I've won the toss less than 10 times.

It's just unbelievable.

The "Challenge" feature is great, but in 50 or so games I've played, I've yet to see a challenge work out if my favor! The computer more than once has caught passes with one foot in bounds and the other out of bounds, and the challenge doesn't overturn it. Come on EA, give us something better than a fancy way to burn a timeout.

Fumbles when the QB's arm is going forward in a pass, spotting the ball on the 1 yard line when the computer is hammered for a safety, oh - don't forget the fumble on the punt return that you can't pick up and the computer gets and returns for the TD.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET THIS GAME TO DETERMINE THE OUTPUT OF THE GAME BASED ON THE TEAM'S SKILL AND YOUR PLAYCALLING?

The thing that really makes the game a bust is the instability. It occasionally freezes and forces you to reset the console.

EA really should spend more time building quality into the game rather than fancy replays that get annoying after a few games.

Good Game with Serious Flaws

Let me start by saying I have never been a big fan of the Madden series. Madden 2002 fails in many of the same places that the previous editions have, so ifyou liked them, this one will be just fine for you.
First off, the commentary is absolutely HORRIBLE. Worst ever for a modern sports game. It makes me long for Dick Vitale on NCAA Basketball 2000. Its that BAD.Next Gameplay is just too slow. Everything feels like it takes a second longer than it should. I get bored. Maybe thats because I relly do like SEGA's 2k series and it moves along much better than Madden.
On the good side, the fantasy aspects of Madden rule. Create-a-player and Create-a-team are awsome. Too bad the game play falls so short.

I havent played the game yet, but i cant wait. I have the madden 2001 game and also NCAA 2002 and i must say that my standards for the game have been raised. I have read some reviews and i dont like seeing the bad ones. i was just wondering if by any chance that the pass coverage is as bad as on NCAA 2002 where u can double cover and always be burned, though they hardly ever complete the pass. I dont know if this will help becuz i havent played the game yet, but i might have some tips that can help some of u w/ the game. in 2001 i noticed that the main receiver that the QB will throw to is the TE. i always pick a defense where the 2 outside receivers r double teamed. then i use the LB to cover the TE. usually they wont throw to him becus hes covered, but when they do i always knock down the pass or pick it off. also for pressure on the QB, i click on each DE and move them each outside one time. this gives them an edge to rush on and puts pressure on the QB. so ill usually come up w/ a sack. the most ive ever had was 15, using the exact strategy that i have listed. note-i usually only use this when im up in the game and the comp. will always pass. u can also see the formation they will be in when ur picking ur defense. this helps. cuz if theyre in the I formation then u wanna be in the 4-3 or 3-4. if they are in 3 or 4 receivers sets, then u pick nickel or dime and have the outside guys double covered. like i said this is a great strategy for the 2001 game, i havent played 2002 yet, but if its anything like the 2001 game, this strategy will work. and for the people who cant score TD's, just run the ball up the gut. i have played 2001 on all madden and they cant stop me. its so easy, just run behind ur blockers and pick the hole. also i usually bring a receiver in motion and snap the ball when theyre behind the hole that the play is going to. note: this only is good if the guy coverin doesnt come in motion w/ him. well i hope this will help everyone who is having problems w/ the game. i would also appreciate it if someone could reply back to me to let me know of my tips worked and if the game tips that i have listed for the 2001 game r helping on the 2002 game. once i go out and buy 2002, ill write another review and see if it will help yall out.

Great
