Simply Breathtaking, You'll Be Hooked From the Get Go, BUT...

Gears of War is everything you've heard it is, and then some.

While I wasn't a fan of third-person shooters, this game just hooked me and wouldn't let go. The 3rd person format allows for a well-developed system of "cover", or hiding behind objects during intense firefights. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be running and jumping around from concrete slab, to burned car, to doorway, seamlessly while punishing the dreaded Locust.

The concept of "active reloading" will keep your fingers busy during the otherwise boring reload.

The graphics are out of this world, and put any other shooter out on the market to shame (words cannot describe, you have to see the game to believe it).

This is an ADULT game, with violence that is not for the squeamish. The blood and guts factor is this game is phenomenal and is guaranteed to keep you yelling out loud with every chainsaw execution and head shot.

As a seasoned gamer who grew up with the "boss of each level" concept, this game brought back memories with situations like the Berserker at the end of Act 1 (great fun).

The immersion level of this game is up their as well. You'll find yourself talking in the storyline lingo, with expressions such as, "Oh no! A Boomer!".

Best shooter for the 360 out right now, hands down.

BUT! There is an apparent problem that this game is causing. During the whole of the campaign (I recommend you start out on "Hardcore" setting, "Casual" is a joke) my 360 would freeze now and then with the message of "Disk is Dirty" coming up. I checked the disk, which was clean, so I chalked it up to the fact that the game was rented. When the last cutscene ended, the game locked up permanently, and I couldn't load it at all after that. I tried 4 of my other games, which I used to play problem free, to no avail. I looked this issue up and I'm not the only one who has fallen victim to the Gears of War curse. There are numerous blogs throughout the internet complaining about the same issue (there's a review below with the same problem). After calling Microsoft, it turns out that I now need to get my 360 repaired at a cost of $150. Again, this is not an isolated issue! It's been happening a lot, just look it up.

Once I get my console fixed, I intend to buy the game anyway. It's THAT good.

Gears of war is an amazing game but it can destroy your xbox 360

THIS GAME IS DEFECTIVE AND FAULTY!

I assure you I am not crazy. I purchased this game and after only two days of playing it the disc would no longer read. This game is incredibly fun but something is inherently faulty about the disc. My copy had NO SCRATCHES OR MARKS WHATSOEVER, in fact it barely ever left the disc tray of my xbox. My console is brand new and not at fault, my other games work fine.

BUY THIS GAME FROM A BRICK AND MORTAR STORE ONLY! Returning online is a headache and time consuming.

I highly recommend this game, it is very fun, but only buy it from a brick and mortar store like gamestop or EB games. Or rent it from gamefly.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Emergence day is the shortest day of the year!

This game does one thing very well--it feeds the need for eye candy! Beyond that, there is nothing here that is new. The gameplay is very blocky and you spend most of the time tryinig to pry yourself off of walls that you "Jumped" into again and again.
The only thing that keeps this game from being very, very short--is all the time you spend trying to navigate the maze of walls and hurdles that you seem to cling to even when running straight.

The MP isnt too bad. But, just the standard MP at best. The maps are very small and there is maybe a total of 5 maps to play on. GOW could of been one of the greatest games ever if they had put more time in the gameplay and less on the graphics.

I was very disappointed after hearing months of "Emergence day is coming" propaganda. Well, it came and it was a very short day!

Very Disappointing, Yet Very good game

This is by far the best game since God Of War or Halo. Now on to the bad. The games story was poorly done, It did not have the 5 W's. Who, What, When, Were and Why. This could have been the best game of the year or even better, but due to the length and story of the game it is very much a let down. I would highly recommend it and then i would also highly recommend you stay away from it. The creator's of this game should go back to the story board and take some time out to develope a great story, they depended on the eye candy of this game to sell, and it worked. All in all this game is nothing more than a big tease and nobody like a tease.

Boring and repetitive

Looks great but once you've seen the first level you've seen it all. Nothing but ducking and shooting with no real atmosphere despite what others say. Save your pennies and check out Rainbow Six Vegas or stick with GRAW.

this is absurd some magazine compare this game to to Halo engine not even close .very desapointed. the game played more like unreal and residen evil .and to finist checkpiont to checkpoint you have die 5 to 8 times even on easy setting. game is ok but not a halo killer. play on line is 2 minutes section.as soon your 4 team menber die start the new section. not good.

Overhyped.

I bought this game on a whim to see what the hoopla was about. And I'm afraid I was disappointed greatly. The graphics is pretty damn good, but the controls are too sticky for my taste. Additionally, Epic stole the cover system from Midway yet touted as their own seemingly. The single-player is extremely short, lasting for approximately 10 hours. Overall, this game is not worth it at full retail. Don't buy the hype.

More fun for hardcore gamers

As mentioned in my other GOW review, I prefer the first-person HUD perspective rather than over-the-shoulder. I did not like GOW as much as the Halo series.

Amazing game, pretty good bonus content...

I have to say, Gears really does live up to the hype. Everything from the revolutionary cover mechanic to the lancer chainsaw are all perfectly executed. The main campaign is short, but it's so much fun that you won't mind playing through it again, especially with a friend. One thing that really surprised me is that, for a third person shooter, the controls are amazingly tight and comfortable--and this is coming from someone who still plays with an inverted legacy setup (ala Goldeneye).

The extra content for the Collector's Edition is definitely worth the price. The bonus DVD isn't quite up to par with Halo 2 DVD, but it is still interesting. One weird thing about the DVD is that it has this whole pseudo-documentary video presented by the children of Epic's employees. I suppose it's "cute" and all, but I think Epic lost sight of their audience with that one.

Anyway, nitpicking aside, Gears is a fantastic game and the Collector's Edition is definitely the best way to get the full experience.
