It needs clear warning on PC compatibility

We have been playing (me and my son, 36 yrs and 6yrs old) the Game Boy vesion of this game. Very much fun!
Then we decided to get the PC version. However, getting the game running is not easy.

The game is great once you get it running. Much better than the GBA version. However, Eidos should put a clear label (huge and eye catching) to warn buyer that it really requires PC that are compatible, especially the graphic and sound (hardware and software). I am concerned over kids who buy this game on their own money and ended up having tension built with their parents when it turned out that they need to upgrade the hardware.

If you search around, this game itself is rated the best playable game this year. Adult should enjoy the fun too, although some said it doesn't have enough challenge. So it is a must get, but be ready with hardware compatibility.

LEGO meets Star Wars

First off, a warning: As many other reviews have mentioned, you should definitely make sure your computer can run this game before you buy it. My computer is probably about as high-end as you can get at this point in time and I had to crank down some of the graphics options to get it to run smoothly. NVIDIA graphics cards work best, which is fine, since they are one of the cheapest and most common graphics cards on the market. It is very unlikely that this game will run on the "stock" graphics card your computer came with if you got it at one of the superstores (Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.)

Anyway, the actual game: Suprisingly awesome. I remember rolling my eyes at the very idea when this game was about to come out, but after playing the PS2 demo at a Wal-Mart, I was hooked. The game blasts through the plots of the three prequel Star Wars films, "The Phantom Menace", "Attack of the Clones", and "Revenge of the Sith". It is all of the action with none of the dialogue. In other words, perfection.

Though it looks like it would be a kid's game, it is still addicting fun for the more serious teenage gamer; especially if he's a Star Wars fan and loved LEGOs as a kid. Seeing all of the characters, from Qui-Gon and Watto to Obi-Wan (in his three incarnations) and General Grievous as LEGO dudes is just, well... cute. I would recomend actually seeing the Star Wars films first, obviously, because the game assumes you know what's going on, and makes LEGOized versions of familiar scenes from the movies. Everything is done without dialogue and a good dose of humor.

The controls are simple and relatively intuitive (though you can change them if you must), and the gameplay is challenging enough to be interesting, but not so challenging as to be frustrating.

I sincerely hope LucasArts and Eidos make a sequel, chronicling the classic trilogy. I would be first in line to buy it, or if need be, buy upgrades to my computer to play it.

Eidos & Amazon sell defective disk!!! Then, the Eidos' tech phone 1-800-252-1738 does not work at all. Now, on XMas day, I need to explain to my son what kind of companies will sell this defective product to ruin his Xmas. Personlly, I will never buy any product from Eidos.

PC requirements are a drawback

IF you are going to buy this game, FIRST make sure your PC can run it--alot of Intel graphic chips are not compatible with it. You have to have a Pixel Shader v 1.1 to run it or you will have big problems. My poor son wanted this game so badly, but when we installed it on our less than a year old HP PC, we couldn't get it to run because of this Pixel issue. Despite doing alot of research on the web, we still haven't been able to get it to work. And if you get some kind of fix, it can be a big drain on your PC or require alot of work. SO BEWARE!!!

Well, I picked up this PC game "used" 1/2 off the retail price of $29.99. I wanted a new game for this Christmas so that my son & I can play something we like together. It so happens to be star wars & lego. I am a techie type, but not a serious gamer that would spend $300+ on a state-of-the-art graphics card. I picked up a Toshiba laptop on "black" Friday sale after Thanksgiving for about $550. It has minimum specs., granted it is a "new" PC with a Celeron M 1.5 Gigaherz processor. It has an ATI 3D chipset built in, which is a requirement for the game. Also, I know that you would need DirectX 9.0c (which is downloadable) from Microsoft. But more importantly it does have a 3D type gaming chipset with about 64megs of dedicated video memory. And guess what, it works. My laptop was intended to be my wife's but since I am the techie, I am using it. Also, having USB controllers on the game will help. Keyboards in general are not ideal for gaming. I agree with another reviewer. The game does not require a high-end gaming PC to work, it just requires a PC with a AGP slot that one can upgrade the graphics card to a in-expensive 3D card for about $30 or more. Then your PC can then play other games that require a 3D graphics card. I would recommend at least a 64 Meg card. My point is an OEM type computer, if purchased with the right hardware, can run this game! But unfortunately, most entry level PCs have built in graphic cards and does not have a on-board AGP slot, even if you don't have an AGP slot, video card manufacturers do make PCI slot versions, but it would be tricky to disable the on-board video and use the 3D card. And pixel shading 1.1 is part of the DirectX 9 requirement, translation: purchase any 3D card that can support Direct X 9.0c

Game requires a specific graphics card requirement

What the product information does not highlight is that a high end graphics card is required to run this game. Specifically one that supports "pixel shader" technology. Most 'off the shelf' computers to not have a graphics card that supports this game, particularly ones that are over a year old. The price range to purchase a graphics card that supports this game is 120$ to 180$.

5 stars with an asterisk

True, this game doesn't work on every system. I couldn't get it to work on an older computer with XP - it's not the computer but the video card that causes it not to work on certain systems. Save for that, I have 5 and 6 year old boys who will play this game together 16+ hours a day if my wife and I would let them. They absolutely love it. We initially thought Episode 6 of the Star Wars movie was too violent for them, but after playing this game for two weeks, they enjoyed the movie as much as I did, and weren't afraid at all.
I highly recommend this game, provided your sytem can play it.

Requires Administrator Privileges to Run

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 5

You will not be able to run this game in a user account that hasn't been granted administrator rights. I have an account for each of my children and myself and none of these accounts run with administrator privileges. That is one of the best ways to prevent viruses and worms from infecting my PC and it allows me to limit the amount of time my kids play on the computer. Requiring Administrator privileges to run the game bypasses all of those protections. This is sloppy design work on the part of Eidos and/or Giant Software.

I would have returned the game immediately, but this was a birthday present for my son and, as mentioned before, many stores will not take back opened software.

I also had problems with the poorly specified video card requirements. It seems silly to say that it requires "Pixel shader" support when you can't find out whether any particular video card supports that or not. I purchased two different video cards to get the thing to work (after $70 and a generous CompUSA return policy).

In the end, the kids love the game, but I keep thinking that there are plenty of other games out there that they would love just as much and wouldn't have caused me several days of grief as I tried to get the game to work.

Bad Disk Fix

Just wanted to let people know that if you do receive one of the defective disks, call (800) 252-1738 for a replacement disk. This is listed on the Eidos support website: http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/CustomerSupport/FaqSearch.jsp

It takes about a week for the new disk to arrive.

A hilarious twist of legos and Star Wars

First of all I would like to say that all the people who write reviews out there and give it a 1 star rating because it won't run on their computer, are morons. They shouldn't give a game a bad rating because their computer doesn't have the system requirements. That's the computer's problem not the game's. And because of the people who write such stupid "reviews" other people are going to look at the average rating and say, "Oh, only 3 stars, not worth the money."

Having that said, I'll get down to the actual game. The game is very well done. The graphics are great, the levels are fun, and you get to play as a bunch of Star Wars characters. You basically get to play in the 3 newest movies. And within each episode are a series of levels that correspond to the 3 movies. In the levels there are many cool things to do. You collect lego studs, or "money" which you can use to buy additional characters or special bonuses.

The game itself is relatively easy and short but really fun. ( my friend claims he beat the game in 5 hours ). I almost never tire of playing this game, although every once in a while it gets boring and I'll switch to another game. One thing that I don't like about the game is that you can't get into vehicles. You can only do that in specific levels where you have to stay in the vehicle the whole level. getting into vehicles is one aspect I'm looking forward to in Lego Star Wars 2.

The best thing, however, about this game is the co-op player mode on the computer! Something you don't see in a lot of Star Wars games. The game works for me because it is enjoyable and at the same time I can play co-op with my brother who always bugs me about when it's his turn on the single player games like Battlefront or Republic Commando.

Another cool thing about the game is that if you collect enough studs in each level, you obtain a true jedi status meter. Once you complete all the meters, you will get a secret level. I'm not going to tell you what the secret level is, but I will tell you something. CLUE: In the secret level build the word LEGO for a special bonus!

overall: The game has humor which is very cool. The characters are unique and shatter into peices when you die. You can't really lose a level. You can get a sweet secret level. The levels are entertaining. You can fly in some ships. And it's CO-OP! AWESOME! I would recommend it to all people of all ages.
