Ridiculous Hardware Requirements

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 2 / 2

Luckily, I checked this out of the local library prior to purchasing it, because when installing it on my son's computer he got the imfamous pixel shader error, ironically, AFTER the install was almost complete... why not check that first?

Anyway, I find it hard to believe Quake 4 has no problem, but LEGO STAR WARS with it's _advanced_ pixel shaded graphics can't run on his PC!!??? Utterly ridiculous.

Fun Game - Check compatability

First of all if you bought the game and then realized that you did not have pixel shader support, try this before you toss the game:

1) run 3d-analyze
2) Go to select and find the star wars EXE file. (probably in program files)
3) check off "Emulate HW TnL Caps"
4) check off force pixel shading 1.1
5) click run

This worked for me and some others.

If I were to rate the game solely for what it is supposed to do, namely entertain young boys, I would give it 5 stars. The graphics are terrific and the game play is fun. It is easy enough for young kids to play ad there are enough hidden extras to make the game more exciting for more experienced players. As a parent I like the lack of gore in an action game. There are no bloody messes. Just broken Lego pieces.

I had to take off 2 stars because of the compatibility issues with the pixel shader. Yes I know the requirements state that you need a Video card with pixel shader support. However the average user has no idea what a video card is. Most people assume that thier brand new Dell will be able to play a game on the OS that it was designed for. This is true for %99 percent of games. I tried this game on 4 different PCs. One was two years old, one nine months old, and two barley a week old. It did not run on ANY of them without 3D-analyze. I think it is poor judgment to put out a game that cannot even be played on the newest computers.

After spending literally hours trying to get this game to work on my 10 year old son's PC, we cannot figure out where the missing link is....video card? Memory? He has a Duron 1.6, 64 megs of RAM and a Radion 9200SE videoecard. Is it a coincidence that an ad for Nvidia Video Cards is the first thing to pop up on the screen when the Lego game loads in????? My son spent his own $$ on the game, and is heartbroken. As for me, I'm sick of the planned obsolesence of the computer industry. LEGO, are you listening?????

Great but flawed

A great idea, and a good single-player romp if you're into breaking things.
Forget playing through this in co-op. It's fun for a couple of levels and then you get to the pod racing. I played this on single player and found it frustrating but possible. However with someone else attached to you seemingly on a rubberband, constantly pulling you off course it becomes a complete nightmare. Just for the record I've completed all 3 GTAs since 3, Ninja Gaiden, and the first Halo on Legendary, so I'm not one to give up easily. Co-op pod racing will rob you of your enthusiasm for life.

Yet another bad disk from Amazon

Same error and known problem: Wrong disk inserted. I ordered this from Amazon assuming they would be the most reputable source for this game. NOT!! It is absolutely pathetic that Amazon allows this kind of poor quality and a KNOWN defect to pass through their site. And yes, I also have a disappointed 8 year old wondering how Santa Claus gets bad disks...

Great game

I bought this game for PC. It is really fun. I don't like many star wars games but this one is fun. You play the first 3 episodes (the 3 newest movies). Its a little short and i wish i had waited and not paid what it was when it first came out, but it still is fun. even though you beat it you can go back and play all the levels over as you need unlocked characters to get to certain areas that you couldn't first time around. the game play and graphics are great. For the people complaining that it wouldn't work on their PC, its because its a cheap PC. I tried to load it on my laptop and it wouldn't because laptop video cards aren't meant for 3d gaming unless you buy something like and Alienware made for games. So i loaded it on a PC i built myself and it worked great. All you need is a compatible video card and you are all set. So for those buying the cheap PCs with integrated graphics, it might not work. My video card was less than $100 too so its not like i put anything crazy in it. the whole PC was like $400 to build.

Eidos Interactive is a sham

You'd better hope this game works - because when it doesn't you'll find the company doesn't exist. They have now ignored 3 email requests for support when the DRM in the software broke on my computer (yes, I only use genuine software). Calls to their phone number take you through an endless maze of non-relevant menus - only to find "our live agents are not available today" which of course is every day.

Think twice before you buy.

Lego Star Wars I and II: Same Complaint

I left this exact review of Lego Star Wars II. No use rewriting because it is the exact same problem:

Okay, I am admittedly a mom who is as far from a computer geek as a person can be. Nonetheless, I have purchased dozens of PC games for my kids over the years and I have NEVER run up against a game that will require me to purchase and install a new video card. I bought this game because my boys love Legos and Star Wars. So now, if I don't want to disappoint my kids (who have already unwrapped the package) the cost of this KIDS game goes up at least $70 from the purchase price. And my boys were so excited about playing this game and I am now in the unenviable position of deciding whether or not to ante up the cash to get it to work. Terribly frustrating and disappointing.

Hidden Incompatibility

We bought the game believing it would work on our system since the demo did. It doesn't work after a day of troubleshooting.

I have found some sites that list it as compatible with Windows 98 while other sites and the packaging indicate it is incompatible.

As I said, the demo is compatible with Windows 98 while the game is not.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!! Technical Problems!!!!!

My son had wanted this game very badly. I explained that his older PC wouldn't run it properly (older HW config - it was a hand-me down computer). I told him that he could get it when he got a new PC. This year for Christmas I bought 3 new PCs for our home - he and his brother got one of them. So he asked for this game and I got it for him for Christmas.

Original Disk Malfunction

The original disk that was shipped from Amazon.com was a malfunctioning disc with a known problem. So known, in fact, that the company has a link on its website with the problem listed and an 800 number to call - (800) 252-1738 ext 13

http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/CustomerSupport/FaqSearchResults.jsp?problemType=-9&searchText=+&game=177&platform=3

Replacement Disk Limitations

Then the company ships a replacement disc that only works on certain hardware specifications....and our brand new PC was not one of those specifications. As it turns out MOST video cards are not capable of running this game (again another known issue - see website)

http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/CustomerSupport/FaqSearchResults.jsp?problemType=-9&searchText=+&game=177&platform=3

There were NO technical specifications on the Amazon.com website as far as what the game required (in case they are put up later I printed the website when I ordered it). Since the game had to be opened to be checked I automatically lose 50% of the value if I try to return it.

Don't waste your time and money on this game. There are plenty of reputable game makers out there that put out a quality product. Shop with them. As for Amazon, they need to do a better job of documenting when something won't run on what is considered an above average PC (1GB Ram, 120GB HDD, XP Home, Nvidia GeForce video card).

If I could give ZERO stars for this interaction I would.

VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE GAME MAKERS AND AMAZON!
