Buyer beware: Know your system before purchase!

I purchased this game for my son's 10th birthday. He is a huge Star Wars fan and loved Lego Star Wars II, which works fine on his Dell Dimension desktop. However, when we loaded this Lego Star Wars we got an error message telling us it was not supported by our system because we needed "pixel shader 1.1". My family is fairly computer literate, but this was beyond us. Turns out we needed a new graphics card AND a new power supply to support said card in order to play this game. This was especially frustrating because we have never had problems with Lego software before. We do not have an old system yet we ended up spending over $100 in upgrades in order to play this version of Lego Star Wars. These upgrades needed to be installed by a professional, which meant a number of days without our computer. Why Lego can't make its games run with the same system requirements is beyond me. I can't stress strongly enough how important it is to read the graphics card requirements and make absolutely sure they match your system's capabilities before you purchase this software. It looks straightforward, but IT IS NOT! (In case it helps other purchasers, we upgraded to a GeForce FX 5200 graphics card.) Once it's loaded, this game is "awesome" according to my 10-year old, but getting there may not be worth the effort if your system (not to mention pocketbook) is not up to it.

Don't buy the PC version.

Simple as this ... do not buy any game from any company that puts their name on this game. At the very least, do no buy this game for the PC. If you absolutely must, I recommend that you borrow it from someone who owns it, and install the borrowed copy on your computer before you think about buying it. Why would I suggest this:
- There's at best a 50/50 chance it will work for you.
- If it doesn't work, you will not be able to get a refund.
- The company will not be releasing a patch.
- They recommend you download their demo before buying, but I've read cases where the demo runs but the actual game does not.
- They will blame you for being stupid for not knowing the details of your video card.

At most, this should have been a demo game included in a video card package ... not an off-the-shelf game. I would suggest borrowing any game written by any company that puts their name on this product. Its the only way to know whether it will work for you.

Dude, blame Dell or yourself... not the game

To all of you out there writing bad reviews about this game or any game for that matter that have not even played, you are so typical.

To some of the reviewers here...their first problem is they bought a Dell, a low end one none the less. The higher end computers they sell will play this with no problem...you just bought into their $599 all inclusive computer deal......I bet that rebate incentive you got is not worth it now.

Most cheap mainstream computers sold come with onboard graphics that are powerful enough browse the web and to run DVD movies, which happen to be 2D not 3D. They are not gaming machines. You must pay MORE money for a decent gaming machine.

You have now purchased a 3D game. I am sure you knew this when buying it. Maybe you should take responsibility for your actions and lack of knowledge before ripping a game you have not even played. I know your type. You are so mad you probably feel like suing the game company. This experience will probably cause you and your child to be left in a traumatic state for a long, long time.

Like other readers posted. Always go and download the demo first. You get to test drive before you buy. Do us all favors and educate yourself about computers, at least for your children's sake.

No one wants to read false and biased reviews.

Another defective game

Another defective game and another disappointed child. We tried for a long time to install it and when we saw Disk 1, we thought a second disk had been lost in the Christmas wrappings. Glad to find out we weren't the only ones and that a replacement disk will be available.

A great game

I bought this game for my 8 year old son. We've had a great time playing. It's taken him about two months of Saturday and Sunday morning play (at about 2 hours per day) to complete it; but there's no sign that he's given up on it yet. This game allows two players to play together and cooperate; so as another reviewer mentioned it makes for good father-son time.

I was surprized to read about all the graphics problems. I have a good NVIDIA video card on which it runs with no problems, and the graphics are quite good.

Funny and great

I love this game. I had a little trouble with it on my old computer which was an intel then I bought an AMD with a NVIDIA card and the game runs great. A little short but it is still tons of fun. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a Star Wars and Lego fan.

Looks great if you can actually load the game

I am gaming junkie. I bought and installed about 25 PC games this year. I bought this game and encountered an installation error, which after some research appears to be a common problem. Never mind that my PC met all the performance specs. Eventually I was able to determine that if you encountered this particular error message, you could call a (toll) number and get a replacement disk, for free. Apparently I wasn't the first to encounter this problem. A few weeks after I called, the replacement software appeared, but I encountered the same failure to load the software. The game looks great on TV commercials - I bought this for my young son, but he was never able to play it. I found Eidos' customer support to be minimal......bush-league really. I've never had any difficulty installing another game, but this one got me.

DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

You need pixel shaders v1.1 to play. I don't have that on either one of my computers. One computer is only 1 year old and top of the line. --- son

From Mom: My son played this game on a Game Cube and liked the game so we bought it, (...) when we were at Legoland. (It's not like we're going to drive all the way back to Legoland to return it). We come to find out that it needs some incredible video card -- it doesn't specify clearly the exact pixel shader on the box and this requirement is so different from all standard software that it should be mentioned pointedly on the box. We went on the web to look for solutions and only found dozens of angry and frustrated people in the same boat. We feel taken.

Make sure you have the right stuff before purchasing this game. --- mom

Requires obscure hardware -- big disappointment!

My son saw this at a friend's house, had a lot of fun with it, and we ordered it. To make a long story short, it won't run on my high end 2 year old HP laptop, since it requires an obscure video card running something called pixel shader. Unless you are 100 percent certain your computer will run this, don't bother ordering it!

Warning -- Will NOT Run on the average guy's computer!

Okay, first I need to say that I'm a computer geek. I know my machines and how to take care of them. I'm not an avid PC gamer though, so my PC is very good, but does not have the latest $599.95 video card on the market. My son desperately wanted this game and, being overconfident in my own geekiness, I bought it without reading the specs on the back of the package. You need a VERY specific video card in your machine or this will not install. Since I'm not about to rush out and drop a super-charged vid card to play a $30 game, this purchase was a total waste of time. **Parents, this game will NOT work on your computer, even if you bought it this year, unless, of course, you have purchased the top of the line gamer's machine. Spare your kids the heartache, and buy it for the Gameboy instead.
