Disappointment

I am a 30 something mom and play all the Sims and RollerCoaster games for years. Yes I even play TSO! I am HOLLIDAY in AV, TC and DC.
I was HIGHLY disappointed in Atari's version of RCT3. It's a shame that it wasn't done by Chris Sawyer and that his company gave the rights away to have someone else destroy his legacy of RCT.
I gave it a 2 for the Fireworks and Onboard Camera which the effects are really cool. Unfortunately, those are the only 2 highlights.

When I first opened the box, I knew I was in trouble since the game is only 1 CD...Sims2 is 4! This is nothing like Sims2 but they were hoping with the 3-D effects.

Maybe it's just me and I am used to the other RCT versions but this one is tough to make a smooth transition of building and playing your RCT empire.

Save your money and wait for it to fall in price. Forty is too much to pay.

Pre-ordering with amazon is a waste of time!

Ships within 24 hours? Really?! My order was placed on August 17, the game is now available, and they say it'll ship around November 2nd. Go buy it in a store, you'll get it faster for the same price. Never buy from amazon again!!

The Good, Bad, and Ugly....

The Good - Graphics look sharp, lots of extra themed items that look good, fireworks, import your own music, ride your rides.

The Bad - The controls are clumsy and seem backward especially if you have play RCT1 or RCT2, lots of the scenery walls and things do not line up mesh with each other, impossible to create a ride inside of a building.

The Ugly - The terrain application is HORRIBLE, no more tunnel, no more rides or paths underground, the terrain is no longer broken up in grids that can be raised and lowered, no when you do that work it pulls all of the land and looks like crap.

You will be diappointed in this game if you are expecting anything like RCT1 or RCT2, dont waste your money.

The third installment for Roller Coaster Tycoon series

I bought RCT 2 for less than a dollar and was very impressed with it despite the very antiquated graphics. It was a very fun game with all the up to date coasters and rides. RCT 3 had the same setup with a few major differences. The variable camera zooms and angles are a welcome addition. Also the graphics are considerably better, with excellent use of light and shading and dimension. I was very impressed with the first person camera view for any of the rides. The overall layout is very bright and inviting. One of the best features of the game is the return of blowing up coaster cars. Yes blatant and spectacular destruction; I found to be particulary interesting.

With that said I must state the downsides to RCT 3. The layout of the game is somewhat confusing and there is a learning curve to understand where everything is at. Park patrons leave a bit to be desired in terms of detail. I assume they were going for a cartoonish look. The game does reqire a good amount of memory as well to run smoothly with higher resolution. Moreover I have a widescreen resolution (1280x800) and RCT 3 did not have that option so on the 1280x960 resolution I couldn't see the ride itenerary. There was also the fact that this game just got kind of boring fairly quick because I had a problem making money so I sat there and watched people walk in and out of the park. While RCT 3 has nice new features, thats all they really are is nice, not revolutionary or amazing. Unfortunately there is only so much you can do with an amusement park building game and it looks like RCT 3 has just about hit the ceiling.

Overall RCT 3 is a decent game, but not worth more than $20 at the most. I give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Terrific game...

Here's the good and the bad of RCT3.

GOOD AND BAD:
G: Great graphics!
B: Gets a bit slow at times, but this usually passes quickly.

G: Awesome shops and stalls that put you in control.
B: Shops tend to break-down a lot.

G: Custom design your own peeps and put you and your friends into the action.
B: It's annoying when you want to take a picture of your whole group, but the group leader is excluded from the picture. (Note to those that have this problem. Create a "photographer" in your peep group that you don't want in the picture.)

G: Employees that you can train and manipulate to your liking (how cool is it to watch a tiger break dance?).
B: Full training is very helpful, but $350 for each employee gets expensive.

G: Great scenary that corresponds with every theme.
B: When do you stop?

G: Cool rides that are fun to watch and fun to ride.
B: Either too expensive, too calm or too thrilling. None of the rides are really in-between.

G: Try your hand at scenarios, sandbox, or make your own scenario and challenge your friends!
B: Gets frustrating because you have to customize EVERYTHING!!!

G: Create ponds and lakes (and waterfalls if you have the expansions).
B: Expensive and not very accurate. ("If I could just get that mountain a little higher...a little more flat...NOOOOO!!!")

G: Escort VIPeeps into your park and try to please them.
B: You try building a $13,300 roller coaster to please Cami O when you have 1,300 dollars!!! They're just too picky...

G: Create awesome fireworks shows that wow your audience!
B: Gets very tedious and VERY expensive.

Overall, I'd give this game a 9.3, only because the game can get a bit slow when you're building huge coasters and when you're playing curing the night. Fortunately, there's fast-forward mode, so you can get past tricky spots and earn money quickly. I'd say definetely buy this game!!! But, if you really want to experience the entirety of the game, buy the expansion packs, too. It really completes the experience.

Tremendously disappointing

I've loved all of the previous RCT products. I had great hopes for this one, as they seemed to have added features like riding the rides that I had always wanted to have.

Unfortunately, it didn't work that way. The interface has changed COMPLETELY. I found that I didn't know how to play the game at all, in spite of tons of experience with the other RCT games. The changes could be a good thing, if they made the game better. But they don't. They are harder to use, requiring more clicks, and far less intuitive.

While the graphics are nice and seem advanced compared to the previous graphics, the interface seems to have gone backward. It is more akin to the old Sim game interfaces.

I am a laptop user. I installed this on my laptop and it ran fine, though it did take quite a while to load. With all the games I play, I use my touchpad and related buttons that correlate to mouse buttons. That doesn't work for this game, though it did for the previous RCT's. Instead, I had to use keyboard buttons like page up and page down for various functions. It was again completely not intuitive and not fun to use.

The difficulties of use and lack of user-friendliness sapped all of my enthusiasm for the new graphics and features. I trashed the whole thing.

All I could think was--how awful. What a waste of $40.

I'll go back to re-playing and re-playing the old Tycoon. :(

Awesome Game

This game is fantastic. It is not like Sim Theme Park or any other theme park game. It does however do what Sim Theme Park was trying to do and extends gameplay to riding all rides, being right at your guests view, being able to customize food and drink options, making fireworks displays, and realisticaly running a theme park, with awesome coasters. If you liked the previous versions, buy this one, it is worth the money!

Not that great

I was dying to purchase Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 for many, many months. I didn't even get it until just a few weeks back, more than 2 months after its initial release.

The game has drastically changed. The hyped changes are only the beginning. 3-D graphics, day/night cycle, coaster cam, fireworks and more are just the beginning of the new features.

Unfortunately, RCT 3 has taken some steps backwards. Peeps are not very smart, and paths are something to be careful with. Be straight and direct. Try to avoid double-paved areas or curvy walkways. This confused them. It's similar to their confusion in RCT1 -- this is disappointing. Normal people could easily navigate these types of paths.

Second, RCT3 has dropped screenshot feature. While this sounds like no big deal, it was fun to snap "photos" of your park. Well, your guests may take some, and you can choose to have them saved to your computer, but the guests are a bit zealous and fill up your picture folder quickly. Most of the shots are boring, anyway.

Third, RCT3 has completely abandoned the summarized list of peeps and thoughts. No longer can you discern that 40 peeps are thinking "I am hungry." You have to click on each one by itself. This is VERY, VERY annoying.

Bugs abounds here. Rides may be quite popular, and suddenly be totally unattended. There is nothing to tell you why, and it is frustrating. Also, it is VERY hard to get the ride popularity percent over even 50%. They hover about 36% most of the time, even roller coasters. Uh...that's not realistic.

The CoasterCam is quite neat. You can ride mostly anything, except walkthroughs like the hall of mirrors. Still, while it is nice on the whole, it is not very smooth. Even the smoothest of steel coasters are choppy while riding. This is not just my computer (which is brand new). Lots of people complain of this.

The media hypes the 3-D Camera as being new, and it is, but you still are positioned slightly "above" the action and by holding down the mouse buttons you can temporarily level out, but you snap right back. I don't get this. That's rather frustrating. Plus 3-D graphics are no longer innovative or special. They're expected to be included with any game. Name one game from recent times that hasn't had 3-D graphics.

Fireworks are nice to make, but they are confusing to schedule and not really all that impressive. Peeps seem ignorant to them anyway. Not worth the effort.

You still cannot position a fence "ON" a walkway. It has to be on a broken walkway (then what the hell is the point of the fence? God damnit!). Plus, peeps can go right THROUGH the friggin fences! That makes them more pointless.

RCT3 is also nowhere near as addictive as the first two installments. I was bored after about thirty minutes. Construction is not as fast. There are several more clicks required and the game is in general slowler. After two years, RCT2 is still amazing and addictive for me.

My advice: load up on RCT2. It's the best one.

Must get

Rollercoaster 3 Makes A Splash!

Woohoo! Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 was a very goood game! An excellent upgrade from RCT1 and 2, this game included the ability to ride the ride and create fireworks, which was awesome! Also, the game looked much more real and gives you the ability to build more complex and creative rides. Plus, you can create "peeps" the RCT3 word for your fair-goers. I had fun with this game and creating new and different rides. Also, it was hysterical to create "peeps" in resemblance to people and watch they do. You can also have a park when you have to bend your back over to create a park special to a VIP peep, who's anyone from the president to a baseball slugger. This game was defintely the best of all the RCT games.
