Tao OW!

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 1 / 2

The only interesting thing about this game is the "visible damage" as the fight goes on (clothes appearing to be slashed, limping of character) The sound bytes of this game isn't anything to write home about, can hardly make out any of the taunts and the background music can drive you nuts. Gamer friendly? Not at all, I had blisters on my fingers from playing this, good luck pulling off the combos too. And the screen shots are so choppy (as well as the fighting)suddenly changing direction that you mess up your combo flow (again, if you can even pull them off). Cute for about 15 mins, then you can put in your DOA3 or Soul Calibur and really play a fighting game.

One of the poorest fighting games yet

I'll first preface this by saying that contrary to the catch-all statement used by many of the 5-star raters for this game, indeed I am a very experienced and very skilled fighting game player who has played numerous games up to Tao Feng. Furthermore, I have taken the time to learn the ungodly combos for this game and have used various characters, and still I find the game to rate 1 out of 5 (would be less if possible).

The gameplay is quite disjointed, as it is completely lacking in fluidity. Oftentimes landing a hit (or block) is a game of Russian roulette; when two people battle it out with combos, the luck of the draw appears to be the main factor between being nailing a two to eight hit combo on your opponent, and being forced to helplessly accept that combo with no opportunity to counter or block. Further, the characters are so dissimilar, and so disproportionate in abilities, that there are plenty of opportunities for an opponent to continue to use one character, and merely repeat the "cheap shots" that one must endure invariably, depending on the character they he or she has chosen.

Unlike most fighting games, it is difficult to tell the proper time to block or otherwise evade a hit/combo. The disproportion among the fighters, along with the poor gameplay, as well as jerky movements and animation, make for an unpleasant gaming experience when compared to other fighting games. Granted, the graphics may be impressive, but not enough to make up for the lacking in the other areas.

Save your money and pass this one up (or at least rent it before you buy it).

The Alternate Stance

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 2

Saying that firey Pheonix is the best character in the game means you truely havent mastered the Alternate Stance, the alternate stance takes slow moving Exile and gives him grace like divinity,
when you take this option and a couple people who know how to use it the fight could go either way, and its almost imposible to beat me with divine fist and iron monk and if you havent mastered the alternate stance the most unstoppable character is the Fatalist......
The limb damage isnt the best part of the game its the reality of it all, the moves are very realistic that make it look like a properly coriographed movie.
the only flaws in this game are the veiw changes and you go from blocking to being beatin senseless and the game itself is really short and should have a few more charcters and unlockable features...and the biggest problem is that theres no sequel still this game needs a little faster and brutal number 2 so they could take a great fighting game and make it the best.

Best fighting game on the Xbox

By far the best fighting game on the XBox, if not for all systems. Great animations, great combos, huge worlds. This was made by a lot of the same people who worked on the Mortal Kombat series of games, but it looks like they learned from their mistakes and made something fresh.

Also, Jade Dragon? Mmmmmmm

overated title

This is probably the most dissapointing game I have ever bought.
The controls are sluggish and the combos are weak.It is better to let your " chi meter" fill up and push one button than do 5 or 6 button combos that are blocked or just not effective.Save your money and buy DOA 3 which may be easier but is just alot more fun.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING GAME IS STILL KILLER INSTINCT

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 3

IT HAS GOOD GRAPHICS, BUT ONLY 12 FIGHTERS, AND HALF ARE GIRLS. THAT KINDA STINKS. ITS GOT GOOD ATTENTION TO DETAIL, LIKE IF YOU KICK SOMEONE INTO THE WALL IT LEAVES A MARK. BUT THE BLOCKING STINKS. ITS COOL IF THE PERSON BLOCKS TOO MUCH THEIR ARM OR LEG WILL BREAK. ONLY 4 BUTTONS TO ATTACK, THAT STINKS. THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING GAME IS STILL KILLER INSTINCT BECAUSE OF COMBO BREAKERS, FINISHING MOVES, AND HIGH COMBOS. I THINK XBOX SOULD DO PART KI3!!!

Steep Learning Curve, but excellent 2-player game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 3

The learning curve for this game is extraordinarily steep. Pressing the joystick forwards and a punching is different than standing still and punching or pressing backwards and punching. The combos are somewhat canned, though you can change them up a bit. FIghting against the computer isn't very fun--the computer is either very easy (just stands around) or impossible (combo after combo after combo, never missing a beat). Definitely room for improvement in the 1P game.

Playing against a friend, however, is extremely fun (unless, of course, your friend can chain combos like the computer).

In either case, though, the blocking aspect is lacking.m It doesn't work right half the time for some reason, leaving you vulnerable when you thought you were safe. The environmental effects are amazing (especially the rain, and when you stand next to a fire), and the 3D graphics are so far above the easily-detectable polygons of a year ago. The body damage (bruising, bleeding) is very well done, though the actual "bone breaking" isn't there like the advertisements said.

Overall, a stunning game worth a look.

LOVE IT

I THINK THIS GAME IS GREAT, IT LIKE MORTAL KOMBAT, BUT ON STEROIDS, THE MOVES ARE GREAT, THE STORY LINE IS BELIEVABLE, AND THE GAMEPLAY IS OVER ALL VERY FUN. THE GRAPHICS ARE PHENOMINAL JUST LIKE MOST XBOX GAMES, BUT THIS ONE DEFINATELY STANDS OUT FROM THE CROUD. ESPECIALLY ON LARGER TV'S THIS IS A GREAT GAME.

much better than expected

got it at the new price and it's well worth even full price.
Deep fighter and it looks like Studio Gigante actually attempted to bring some fresh ideas to the genre.

well worth the time to really learn the game properly.

Hard Misses

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 1 / 3

Tao Feng is a below average fighting game. It's best feature is the limb damage and nice graphics, but everything else in the game is a miss. the controls are sluggish. You'll notice a slight delay when you press the buttons to the character on screen responding to it a second later. Sound effects are weak and you can barlely hear the smacks. The novelty in this game is that when you block attack too much you can have limb damage in your arms or legs. You'll see the characters limping and do less damage when they attack. But they can repair their injuries when they do combo moves on you, which defeats the whole purpose of "limb damage". The fighting techniques are uninspired and lack that extra -oomph-. The character's animation look a bit stiff and lack fluidity which other fighting games have. In addition to the stiffness, the characters are very ugly looking. They look like platic action figures and have a bunch of tattoos on their bodies. There are only a few fighting arenas and they are mostly dark settings. There is only a few unlockables and they are not satifying. There are better fighting games out
there, save your money for those.

Pros:
+nice graphics
+good sound effects
+limb damage

Cons:
-ugly character designs
-uglier music
-unresponsive controls
-combos are hard to pull off
-difficult to block attacks
-short game
-weak animation
-dark looking arenas
-lacks intensity
-fighting techniques look generic
