Tao Feng--the next big thing?! :D

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 13

I'll admit it, I've got a bias toward this game. That said, I hope this doesn't come across as being dishonest or too one-sided.

Despite the disadvantage of being the first game for a brand-new company, Tao Feng holds its own amongst the many existing fighters. Microsoft clearly raised its standards for its 1st-party games since Kakuto Chojin crashed and burned, and the team at Studio Gigante worked hard to bring a fresh game to the Xbox's exclusive library.

Tao Feng uniquely rewards aggressive gameplay with its chi system, which helps to vary gameplay in a few ways. If a player continuously lands attacks (blocked or successful), the chi meter builds up, resulting in either a special move ("chi attack") when full, or the chance to heal a damaged limb resulting from excessive blocking. Attacking off walls and poles is a fun new feature as well, eliminating the `trapped' feeling found in fighters with invisible walls. Preset Long- and Short-Form Combos give both veterans and newbies a chance at exploring the game's combos and juggles, some of which range up to 12 hits.

To me, the fighting game genre's `big 5' franchises (Tekken, DOA, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, and Mortal Kombat) have become irritatingly similar in the last few years-nearly identical aquarium and cage match levels pop up in DOA3 and VF4, Mortal Kombat's weapon system and large quantity of unlockable content mimiced the Soul Calibur of three years ago, and the differences between Tekkens sequels are far from staggering. While not as technically big and bright as these more well-established titles, the mere fact that Tao Feng was built with innovation in mind from its inception deserves a chance from Xbox owners and fans of the genre alike.

Lastly, if on the off-chance you're a parent reading this and your younger-than-17 year-old wants to pick up Tao Feng-don't be too alarmed at the 'Mature' rating. Sure there's some blood and the point of the game is to beat up your opponent, but there's no offensive language, sex, or nudity common in other 'Mature' games like the infamous Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. So if your kid is threatening to stop loving you if you don't buy him Tao Feng, remember that he's probably seen blood and fighting before and there are plenty of worse things he could be watching or playing on TV. :D

Fantastic Fighting Game!

This is the only worth while fighting game to come out on the Xbox since DAO3. The main novelty of this game is the damage fighters receive during combat. Break an arm, and it dangles throughout the rest of the match, and you can't use it. You get cuts, and scars grow over them. The characters have over three times the polygon count as Dead or Alive 3, which allows for some amazing detail. In addition, the backgrounds are extremely interactive. This is a super game, and raises the bar on all others.

Played an early build, this is the BIG ONE

Don't ask me how, but I got a chance to play an early build of this game and I can say hands down that this is THE FIGHTING GAME TO PLAY. Incredible combos, great looking characters (especially the girls), huge interactive backgrounds, great special effects.

This is no Kakatu Chojin (the WORST fighting game ever made, whoever at Microsoft approved this abortion should be fired)!!

Tao Feng was designed by the original Mortal Kombat team members and they've taken fighting to a whole new level. Do not miss this one.

IGN rates this game an 8.7

Just read the IGN review and it's pretty much what I expected, a top notch fighting game. This game is breaking some rules and that is really refreshing to see.

Best fighting game on the Xbox

By far the best fighting game on the XBox, if not for all systems. Great animations, great combos, huge worlds. This was made by a lot of the same people who worked on the Mortal Kombat series of games, but it looks like they learned from their mistakes and made something fresh.

Also, Jade Dragon? Mmmmmmm

LOVE IT

I THINK THIS GAME IS GREAT, IT LIKE MORTAL KOMBAT, BUT ON STEROIDS, THE MOVES ARE GREAT, THE STORY LINE IS BELIEVABLE, AND THE GAMEPLAY IS OVER ALL VERY FUN. THE GRAPHICS ARE PHENOMINAL JUST LIKE MOST XBOX GAMES, BUT THIS ONE DEFINATELY STANDS OUT FROM THE CROUD. ESPECIALLY ON LARGER TV'S THIS IS A GREAT GAME.

much better than expected

got it at the new price and it's well worth even full price.
Deep fighter and it looks like Studio Gigante actually attempted to bring some fresh ideas to the genre.

well worth the time to really learn the game properly.

Love this game!

I am not usually a video game person but my boyfriend wanted the game so i got it for him. I used to play Nintendo back in high school and was pretty good at the whole eye hand coordination thing. It was great playing against my beau and kicking his butt in ever round. I 'm better than I expected. THe graphics are cool, and I like how the strength of the player is depicted in the looks of the character. My beau doesn't want to play that game with me any more but it's still a great game.

Great game,

I picked up this game after reading a few of the reviews, it seems though that this game has gotten mixed reviews. I pretty much knew what to expect, I have not been let down the least bit and I am loving every min of gameplay.
Cons: Depending on the enviornment, the camera sometimes switches if it gets too close to a wall. After a while though, you end up knowing when it will switch and end up anticipating it. The controls are sometimes a bit too percise and unforgiving. After I went through training mode though I got the hang of how things work and all is well now.

Pros: Where do I start? I don't understand why everyone is complaining about. This game has a great balence between defense and offense. Enviormental attacks that's all I gotta say. You have to be constantly be aware of your opponents position; if your opponent is too close to a wall or pole, look out cause you're gona get attacked. Likewise if your opponent does attack off a wall or pole, if you can block the attack, there is a window of opportunity in which to counter attack. Then on the other end of things, you are alwalys trying to position yourself to attack off the enviornment. No more turtling!!! You also get damage for excessive blocking, if you block too much you get limb damage, then you're attacks for either the upper or lower body are only 50 percent. LD comes in real handy when you are fighting someone that is constantly using upper or lower body attacks and causing tons of damage. Just give them LD and you are set until they can heal. Overall, the animation looks fluid and TF has some of the best throws I have seen in a game to date. The graphics are some of the best ever in a video game anywhere. The sound is fantastic as well, try running it through a home theater. Man, there's too much good stuff to say about this game, I could go on, but the thing I like most about this game is that it's a breath of fresh air from all the other stale fighters out there trying to clone one another. Try it out yourself and see what I mean. And learn the combos!!!

Either you're going to like or you'll hate it...

I got mine used, because the previous owner didn't like it.

The Good- Graphics are amazing. They easily beat DOAX and most certainly MK:DA. The voice work is top notch. This game is the king of polish. Thankfully I never paid attention to the advertising, so theres nothing for me to be falsely anticipating. (I've seen a few reviews that ding the game for not matching the commercial).

The Cheap- The controls are not intuitive. The training interface is clunky. It's not a game you will be able to just pick up and go. You're going to have to read the manual.
