Not Ghost Recon

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 8

Ghost Recon 2 is definitely not along the same lines as Ghost Recon or any of it's expansion packs (PC or X-box). I find it is more like Delta Force for PC or a little like Rainbow Six 3 for X-box. The gameplay is much faster pace than the old Ghost Recon, but it makes for a very exciting game.

First of all, the graphics are pretty spectacular, something you might see in a PC game, although not quite as good. The AI isn't very smart, especially at close ranges, but it isn't unbearable. I do appreciate the city mission where you must go solo and call in air strikes, it's pretty realistic and I was really scared when an APC started driving around the city chasing me down.

If your expecting Ghost Recon, you shouldn't be. If you like fast paced tactical shooters (This involves almost no strategy) like Rainbow Six , this is for you.

The Ghost's are back, LOCK 'N LOAD!

I'm going to start my reveiw of by saying this: I have not played the first Ghost Recon, and I do not own Ghost Recon 2. So this is an information giving reveiw, and not so much of judging. But I am judging by the facts I've heard and read about it, and from the expirience I received when I played the demo in EBgames.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 is a tactical over-the-shoulder military based shooter. But for those who liked the view in the original, or if you just prefer first-person over third-person then there is an option when you pause to switch to either. This game has some of the best graphics I've seen in games this year, and yes I'd say that they compete with Halo 2's graphics. There are 15 single player missions, in witch you have a squad of four ghost's including yourself. When you complete the single player with the AI on your side, try playing Lone Wolf mode where you're by yourself this time around, with some awesome technology at your hands. I'm talking about the new future warrior system that the military is planning on adopting in another few years or so. It has a camera system atached to your gun, witch allows you to see around corners or obstacles without exposing your body. It also has a grenade laucher atached to your gun, so you have alot of firepower to go with that technology. Then when you finally get finished with both of those, you can play one of the many multiplayer modes in the game either on Xbox live, system link, or split screen mode. I loved the fact that this game has split screen because I do not play Xbox live. But even after you finish with all of the multiplayer options, (which I'm sure will take a long time to get tired of since there's over 8 huge multiplayer maps to play all of the dozen's of modes on) there's an option to play co-op with your freinds in the single player mode! So instead of having AI as your team, you can play with humans covering your back. I thought that the co-op feature was an awesome idea, since I play alot at home with my brother. This game is very realistic, and has awesome physics and audio to go along with the terrific graphics. And also there is a hard mode for those veterns out there. But there may be more, that I can't say though since I do not own the game. From what I here it's suposed to have a good story line also since it's a Tom Clancy game. One of the other awesome features is all of the weapons to choose from. There is over 10 main weapons to choose from, all of the rifles with many different combinations. Then you have a standard sidearm, some grenades, and usually a rocket launcher to take out any tanks or other things that you may encounter during your mission. There are four weapon slots that you can fill, one for grenades, one for the rocket laucher or other big misellanous, one for your sidearm, and your main weapon slot for your rifle. You can also take your fallen enemy's weapon's, and substitute them for your main gun. You can also pick your weapons in multiplayer mode. Again I thought that both of these features were good ideas. Well I've tried to cover as much as I can remember, I hope I did pretty good for not owning the game. I will not compare this games fun to Halo 2's fun, because they are not the same kind of game. Halo 2 is a first-person sci-fi shooter. Ghost Recon 2 is an over-the-shoulder realistic military shooter. So really they arn't even in the same classification, so why do so many people compare them? You can't say one is offically better than the other, but you can state an oppinion. But since so many reviewer's state there oppinions like they are facts, you don't really known the truth do you? Well I'm not dissing Halo 2 because I like Halo 2. In fact I took the time to win it over at a friend's house playing co-op, and I enjoyed it very much. But since that's a different game, and this review is for Ghost Recon 2 I won't get any further of target. Well thanks for your time, and I hope this was as helpful and as accurate as I could make it. [...] God bless!

Best Realistic Military Shooter To Date

This is a VERY good game. Does it compare to the fun of Halo 2? No, of course not. This is a realistic shooter, not a futuristic shooter. If youre more of a fan of 1-3 hits being a kill (which is pretty realistic) this is definately the game for you. Theyve vastly improved this game and even though (i personally liked the first) most people didnt like the first, those same people are loving GR2. Dont expect it to be game of the year. If you want a swing at one of the 2 candidates for GOTY (that matter anyway) pick up Halo 2 or Half Life 2.

Then this is your game. I bought GR2 primarily for the online play; so if that's your interest, that's the angle this review is taking.

(For what it's worth, I agree with other reviewers that the single player missions are much more linear than GR1 which is disappointing. If I were grading this game as a single player game, I would go with 3 1/2 or 4 stars. Very solid, but NOT GR1.)

Here are a handful of reasons why I rate this as the best multiplayer game I've ever played:

1. Realism. If you're running and shooting at the same time, your accuracy takes a huge hit. Get hit in the arm, you can keep going. Get hit in the head, not so much.

2. Graphics. They're ridiculous. Tremendous attention to detail.

3. Other Gamers. The people playing this tend to be a bit older, more respectful, and less profane than the Halo 2 crowd. Online play is definitely not a PG experience, but you don't feel like you need a shower after you play for 30 minutes.

4. Strategy. In most cases, if your team isn't coordinating your efforts, you're gonna get it handed to you. The fact that you have to cooperate with your teammates heightens the experience.

5. Custom Options. There are a dozen or so options that you can customize on each game. From playing solo or squad based games to restricting certain weapons packages to controlling the length of the game, the custom options are REALLY rich. The only option it doesn't offer (which GR1 for PC does offer--which is my only previous GR exposure) is limited respawns. In GR2 for XBox, respawns are either unlimited or completely off. It would have been a nice touch to allow a specific number of respawns.

Short story long, this is the most realistic, most enjoyable, most addictive online game I've ever played.

Never played Ghost Recon, but 2 is great!!

I've never played the first Ghost Recon, but I've played enough shooting games to know which ones are good. This is one of those good ones. This game is very tough on co-op mode with a friend. But get three friends for a whole squad and you'll probably do fine. The computer is pretty smart, they know where your shots come from and will continuously be shooting at you. While the single player missions seem very hard (especially when you forget to save), you will find yourself continuing to come back for more. I give this game a 5 out of 5. The fun factor I give a 4 out of 5.

This game is awesome. I played it about 10 hours today. The online co-op is fun to play with your friends across the country. You can play co-op missions and other styles. The solo and team play is great to. The graphics are the best i have ever seen for a online shooter. Better than Halo 2 in every aspect. I was in a game with 5 players and 4 said it was better than halo. In another game 6 out of 6 said better than Halo 2 and 2 said they should have traded in Halo 2 for credit for this game. The maps are huge and detailed. The grass blows in the wind. The explosions are awesome. I own Halo 2, rainbow, and pandorra. This is the best of the best. GAME OF THE YEAR 2004!!!!!

+great online gameplay
+great graphics
+probably good for socom fans seems similar.
+Gun selection is fun
+Huge detailed maps

-No teams (but why compare this to PC version.)

Better than the first, but only slightly

First off the bad. The largest problem I had with this game was finding the enemies, they are very tough to spot, however don't worry too much because the AI is not consistant. At times the enemy could spot you from 100 yards away, and others you could walk up face to face 10 feet from him and shoot him without his knowledge of your presence. Also the controls were rather erratic at times, mainly during firefights, and I found it very hard to control the squad. Now for the Good. The graphics are downright amazing, you can pactically see every leaf on a tree and blade of grass on the ground. Multiplayer is fun as hell, and the single player mode is nicely presented. As far as the controls there are four different options offered and a great, yet a little confusing, tutorial. Overall this is a very fun game, even though the single player mode can be extremly frustrating at times. The multiplayer makes up for it in the end.

Not so good...

Ghost Recon 2 was a disappointment for me. At first I was completely "wowed" by its enhanced graphics, amazing looking maps, new options of weapon swapping, re-supplying with more ammo, laser guided air-strikes, more intuitive-squad commands, etc. All of the new features are fantastic.

However, what made the original Ghost Recon so great seems to be completely abscent from this game.

-All of the maps are linear and resemble more of a dungeon progression than a map used by troops in a tactical situation.

-The enemy AI was a big disappointment. They know where you are at all times and come looking for you. Gone is the element of stealth which was so fun in the first Ghost Recon. Enemies don't go about their random patrols and wander in this game, the appear like monsters in a dungeon at predesignated areas, just like RB6.

-Unlike the original GR games, there are more enemies, which is fun, but only to a point, because the AI is so stupid, and technically cheats 'cause they know where you are.

-My biggest disappointment with GR2 was that all of the buildings- ALL OF THEM, are mearly textured blocks on a map. Gone is the aspect of minor CQB in Ghost Recon 2. You can't take cover in a building, you can't clear buildings or rooms. Have of the fun and terror of playing the original GR was making your way through buildings and out again.

-The best part of the original GR games was its replayability. It was more like an investment than a play it once-that was cool-now I'm bored game. The single-player campaign is entertaining and fun. But the replay ability for multi-play suffers greatly. Although there are many maps and really nice ones too - each map feels the same when you play it (multiplayer). No diversity, except for the settings appearances. The enemies all come looking for you and they're not smart about it either, they just keep comming. No longer can you fight smart, you just have to endure the onslaught. :(

My final assesment of this game is - like others have warned. DO NOT EXPECT a similar game to earlier versions of Ghost Recon. It barely resembles the originals. It is more like a faster paced version of Rainbow Six 3, without the CQB.

Closer to 3.5 stars overall

I haven't completed the single-player campaign for Ghost Recon 2, but I thought I would go ahead and offer my impressions nonetheless. First off, the Tom Clancy games are my favorite Xbox franchise after Halo, and I loved the first Ghost Recon and the Island Thunder expansion pack despite their flaws, so when I first heard about Ghost Recon 2 I was pretty excited about seeing the final product. Now that I've played the actual game for a while, I can't help but agree with other reviewers here who say that although Ghost Recon 2 may very well be a good game, it really isn't Ghost Recon. Despite their occasionally rough graphics and overcomplicated controls, I ultimately think that GR and GR:IT were more unique and enjoyable than GR2. I must give Ubisoft credit for being willing to go in a new direction with the sequel to one of their most popular games, instead of simply tweaking the graphics a little and adding a new feature here or there (EA anyone?). Didn't like the fixed first person perspective of the first game? Well, now you can switch between first person and an over the shoulder view. Thought the menus were confusing? Now they've been simplified and the selection of weapons streamlined. Thought the command system for managing your squad was too complicated? Now you just have one squad to worry about, and the command system more closely resembles Rainbow 6 than the original Ghost Recon. In fact, the whole game seems much closer to Rainbow 6 than the first Ghost Recon, and therein lies much of the problem, I think. Yes, GR1 was a little complicated, but once you did master it you had a wealth of options available to you in terms of both strategy and tactics. GR2 is much more like a typical run-and-gun shooter in which you have a squad who backs you up (in other words, Rainbow 6). Having one squad isn't too much of a problem for me, as I often went out with one in the first game to simplify matters, but the ability to switch between characters is sorely lacking. In the first game you could be the sniper whenever that was necessary or switch to the guy with an automatic weapon whenever you needed to hose down a building full of enemies, but now you simply command your squadmates to do those things for you. Ubisoft has also apparently eliminated in-door environments. This is understandable given that the squads would often get stuck in doorways and such whenever you went inside a building in the first game, but I think they could have just fixed that problem instead of simply getting rid of what was an interesting element of gameplay. The AI is also a little different- the North Koreans seem more adept at taking cover and protecting themselves than the Russians or Cubans did in GR and GR:IT, but their heightened aggression comes at a price. In the first game the enemies basically patrolled a certain number of paths, which allowed you to observe them and then decide how to best attack them at your leisure. In GR2 they simply spawn when you reach certain points at the game and attack you en masse. Much of the stealth and strategy elements that distinguished the first game and its expansion packs are simply gone. In its place you have a well-polished and nicely executed military shooter that bears little resemblance to its predecessors and is best enjoyed without any prior expectations.

Excellent game, but needs just a little work

I thought Ghost Recon 2 was a great game. The single player breifings felt like I was watching a History Channel special. The graphics, frame rate, and sound are all leaps and bounds above GR1. They even put in a feture to give your squad specific orders like suppression fire and flank left/right (and more important your squad AI actually has GOOD pathfinding abilities and aim) The Multiplayer modes are awesome. I mean, you can have 1-3 buddies help you through a mission, or pair off and go 2-on-2, or do a free-4-all.

Unfortunately, you can no longer take over individual squad members in single player, or even change their gear for that matter. Also you only get one squad this time around, but with 4 people instead of 3.
