Different than GR 1.

While this game may have great appeal to many gamers, it does not have the same feel as the first game. In GR1 your path to your objective was open, but in this game you are tied to a linear path, thereby triggering "actions" at certain points. This game is much more of a "shootem' up" type game.......gone is some ability to use intelligent and varied approaches. There are other things missing in this game that were in the original, but I have to say something positive about GR2 also. The graphics are better, and........????......well, that was the only thing better for me. Hey, you may love this game, but if you're expecting gameplay like the original, then GR2 may disappoint you.

Great Online!

If you have XBOX live you owe it to yourself to get this game. It is a blast online! There are some major glitches in getting in and out of games but there will be an update to download soon! The outdoor scenes are well done and it actually feels like you are out in the woods crawling around in the grass or running around in some wartorn city.

A Good Game That Should Have Been Better.

The first ghost recon games had a really good single player mode. They took place in jungles, desserts, and cities. The story line was good just like the ending. But in Ghost Recon 2 the single player mode is a little confusing. In some levels you play as a team with three other ghosts, but in other levels you just play as one soldier.(that mode, by the way, is called Lone Wolf) So that is kind of unrealistic. The American Army would never send just one soldier to do such an important task (unless the soldier was a secret agent) but The Ghosts arnt secret agents, there not someone like Sam Fisher, They are highly trained slodiers though. The mulitplayer is a very good mode in Ghost Recon 2. The local split screen multiplayer is just as good as on xbox live. Overall I would give this game 4 stars.

Ghost Recon 2 : Different Than Original

If you loved Ghost Recon 1, you may not like the sequel. GR1 was a stealth and tactical military type game, where you needed to be at the right positions, at the right angles, and make your moves at the precise moment.

GR2 is totally different. Although it may have some tactical and stealth elements, it's more like the Socom series than the GR series. You can call it a mix between halo and socom since most of the time it's just shooting than strategy.

If you like a game like Socom, you'll love GR2. But if you liked GR1, you may want to rent this before you buy.

Definitely Not GR1

A lot of the 3 star reviews listed here are "spot on" as our British friends would say. The concept of moving your 2 teams into position (like in GR1) to take out a target is NOT present in this game. I stopped sending guys to the left or right because it was mostly a death sentence for them or myself. I kept the team tight in the hopes that they would hit targets that I either missed or didn't see. But the most disappoint event came at the end of the game. I was in a huge firefight when command told me that an "event" was happening...I prepared for it by switching weapons and fired 1 shot...and next thing I knew the mission was over I had won, game over. I thought "HUH?!? you got to be kidding me...this game was really hard for me and THAT'S how it ends?" I'm still in a bit of disbelief and want to check a strategy guide to see if there is more to it. Maybe events happen because I was too cautious? I don't know.

GREAT GAME

This game is a great stealth and shooting game. Do not listen to the idiots who say no one plays it online anymore, it is still the 3rd most played online game in the WORLD at least today which is June 13, 2005. If you don't believe me go to xbox.com and check. If you like shooting or stealth games this is a great one. The online play is awesome and the single player isn't about runnin around with guns blazing. Overall great game.

Stick with the online or skip it...

As a big fan of the original Ghost Recon games on Xbox, I was really looking forward towards Ghost Recon 2. Although the single player missions aren't as great as the earlier games, the online mulitplayer is really a blast. For starters, the graphics are great as well as the sounds and controls. Lag is rarely a factor online although the dreaded "red X" can be a real pain sometimes. Finally spawn campers can be stopped in this sequel with the new options and you won't find nearly as many "glitchers" as in GR1 or GR:Island Thunder. So basically, if your looking for an awesome online multiplayer game for your xbox and if you want a more realistic approach than Halo 2 then I would highly recommend this game.

Many changes and still great

The previous Ghost Recon games never really changed a lot. They were all FPS in which you could not see the gun in your hands, same types of missions, ect. Ghost Recon 2 dicides to be the one to stir things up and make some changes. One good change is the new over-the-shoulder camera view. You can also be in the classic Ghost Recon first-person-view if you prefer. The squad has most of the changes overall. You now only have three squadmates (the previous Ghost Recon games gave you five squadmates) and you can no longer take control of your other squadmates, you just control one guy. The squad command system is easy to use, but you can't give orders to an individual squadmate. In squad based shooters, I want to be able to spread my team out in a firefight so I can attack the enemy from multiple sides. In Ghost Recon 2, you can either get your squad to follow you or tell them all to go to a specified location. With your team all bunched together like this, a well placed grenade will blow your whole squad 20 feet in the air. The enemy AI is okey. They never really do anything that causes me to ask myself why I didn't think of that but they aren't horribly stupid either. They do always seem to see you before you see them. The weapon selection is good and you can pick up the weapons of fallen enemies and comrades. There are also a lot of multiplayer game types both splitscreen and online.

Fun...But the original has it beat.....

Ghost Recon 2 is a very fun game but the strategy involved was taken out. You now are in the game under 3rd person view. You can no longer control every member of your team. Once you die, the mission is over, unless you have saved often, which I recommend. Now on the positive side, the game is very addicting. The missions are challenging and the multiplayer is great if you have multiple friends over. I recommend this game to anyone who loves a good shooter, as well as the $20 pricetag.

Could definitely have been better.

By now it goes without saying that GR2 bears little resemblance to the original incarnation of the game, or even the console ports of it. It's really less a sequel and more a Rainbow 6: Black Arrow, for Ghost Recon. Which is to say: a game that's acceptably faithful to the original but clearly engineered for consoles rather than the PC.

The core design isn't really the problem with this game as, for the most part, it plays pretty well and still manages to convey an authentic GR experience; even if it does lack some of the finer points. Unfortunately as with Black Arrow, your squadmates are pretty much fixed so there's no element of strategy to the pre-game aside from picking your own loadout. Multiplayer options abound and I think the only thing I found lacking about the off-campaign missions was the inability to run a Firefight with a squad to back you up or to use something besides US weaponry in general. It seems the only place you get to play with the foreign hardware is in the true multiplayer modes.

While I was initially quite disappointed to see how stripped down GR2 ended up being in general, it works, so I can't objectively count that against it. With that aside there ultimately ends up being a good number of other things beneath the surface that serve to hinder overall enjoyment.

If you've played the original GR you can vouch for the fact that your squadmates were often the first to pick out and gun down enemies, more often than not before you even knew they were there. It seems that your new squad of ghosts are a bit on the nearsighted side as they generally end up doing exactly the opposite. Compound this with some occasionally schitzophrenic pathfinding and you have a recipe for annoyance. Teammates who randomly run across your field of fire, take cover behind something that occludes their shot of an enemy, or... just not shooting at them at all. The AI commands are pretty limited and none seem to be especially useful aside from "surpress". Telling your mates to flank often just sends them off wandering in a random direction and "hold" seems to wear off by itself and send your little buddies hurrying off to find where ever you've gone in their absence. As a side note, "hold fire" strikes me as almost entirely useless due to the fact that any element of stealth within the game is all but broken and works on only the most basic of levels.

Your opposition on the other hand seems to have no problem finding cover, falling back and repositioning to get the drop on you. The enemy AI isn't brilliant, but its enough to be challenging without a few of the game's more annoying mechanics backing them up. First of these is the fact that enemies will indeed spawn out of thin air. You think you've cleared the area behind you on the way to an objective? Well, you probably did, but now there is inexplicably a hail of bullets comming from that direction. Now make no mistake, the original GR -did- do things like this on occasion but in GR2 it seems to be much more of a staple, or thorn, to the point that its readilly noticable and becomes expected that you can pretty much never safely turn your back. Somewhat in line with this is the fact that when enemies -do- start crawling out of the woodwork (and I don't mean on missions where they're supposed to) they tend to do so in mass numbers. Even in its stripped down form, GR is still not well suited as a by-the-numbers shooter; especially when you have half-braindead AI backing you up.

The mission design is superficially pretty well-varied but alot of the missions end up boiling down to, "go here and protect this from 100 enemies that are swarming out of the treeline". The new "Defend" mode is built around this idea but there are also a few others which place you in the same position. Some of the maps are more linear than others, though once you take into account the randomly spawn-reinforced opposition you may come to appreciate them more than the wider open ones where you're more or less a sitting duck waiting to be ambushed from an area you just cleared out.

The only real "enhancement" to the game, also exacerbates one of its most annoying quirks. The M29 (and that other one, I can't think of right now) are pretty neat little toys that can make it feel more like you're playing Kill.switch than Ghost Recon 2, but they're not without their downside. Though it seems to be more of an issue when using 3rd person, the problem can also crop up in 1st person as well. Your launched grenades (this does apply to any underslung grenade launcher, its just more problematic with the unique aiming of the IWS rifles) seem to have a really large collision box. This basically means that its really easy to unwittingly grenade yourself in the face when behind cover.

I think that's enough ranting so in summary: GR2 could've ultimately been a solid, if stripped down and somewhat halfhearted "sequel", but there's alot of little things counting against it that could be grounds for a good ammount of frustration.
