Nifty RPG

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 9 / 10

Granted I have only owned this game and the PSP for a little over 24 hours now but I can say that this is a decent RPG to sink your teeth into with your brand new PSP system. I like the controls; the joystick action is smooth and has an easy learning curve. The eye candy is nice and the game "feels" like it will last quite awhile. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is for the fact that I really dislike the dialogue screens when you are talking to NCP's. Your mileage may vary but I really hate this about handheld RPG's. Also I imagine I would give it 3 stars as other RPG's come out for this system but right now it's the only game in town and not too shabby. Oh yeah, I hate how the disks don't have a little protective door like 3.5 floppies have ergo the 3 stars for durability.

Great RPG Gameplay for the PSP

If you're a fan of Baldur's Gate, be sure to try Untold Legends a try. This little RPG even lets you play multiplayer with your PSP-owning friends!

You start out getting to choose your character - for females there are alchemists and berzerkers, for men there are paladins and druid. For each character you can customize skin tone and hair style. Then a few attribute settings and you're off!

You start with the traditional spider-bashing, moving from room to room, chatting with the various NPCs you meet. Soon you're picking up loot, killing larger monsters, and heading off on quests. Yes, these are the things RPGs are made of, but of course what makes this brilliant is that you can carry it along with you, play it whenever you want, and get the great PSP graphics.

Even better, if you have friends with PSPs, you can all adventure together wirelessly, in study hall or on the train or bus! You can truly pass hours at a time without any effort, customizing your character and building up levels.

It's fun to zoom in, but really, you play most of this game zoomed out so you get as much of the map on the screen as possible. The variety of weapons and spells keep things interesting. You could say that a downside is that the game is pretty straightforward and simple - but you really don't want a super-complex game for a handheld. That's what the big consoles are for. This hack and slash is sort of the 'gauntlet' for the PSP - run around alone or with friends, gain some levels, find some nifty cool weapons, and then hit SAVE when your bus gets to where it is going.

Highly recommended!

Overall, this game is pretty addictive. I played it for 5 hours straight but never got past the second level. It's a little hard for me, since I'm not a pro gamer myself. I just like this game a lot as an RPG. The graphics are awesome, and the sound effects great. I just wish they would use a little bit more detail on the character because when I'm playing the game I can't really get a good look at his face even with the zoom thing.

Great Launch title RPG

Being that I am a big fan of the Bladur's Gate series I was very happy to hear this would be released alongside the PSP. Once you get past the initial wow factor of the PSP, still drooling myself, you'll begin to appreciate the level of detail in the game. The standard fair of weapons and armor is available, each of which can be augmented with crystals that you find within the game. The game also sports over 100 quests! That's alot of gameplay for a handheld game. Certainly larger than anything on the DS.

The game does not have any voiceover but the text and accompanying illustrations certainly add to experience. There is a bit of a load time between levels and as long as you have the time to play in the first place, it should not bother you too much. The sound effects are very effective in conveying dungeons and other surroundings.

I was amazed at the particle effects that add soo much to the very minute details through out the game. The inventory screen is quite uesable although I noticed a bit of pausing once my inventory was full and I was scrolling through my items. Other than that, you're shown a small 3-d representation of yor character and their current loadout. You can make out their haircolor and current armor and move around them to see what they're wearing or carrying.

All in all, for fans of Diablo, Baldurs Gate, and Neverwinter Nights a great game with hours and hours of gameplay.

Kind of a "Champions of Norrath Lite"

This is basically a fun, uncomplicated hack-n-slash dungeon crawl. Most everything I play is an RPG because I love exploring new 'worlds' and seeing new things. This is basically a game where you immediately start killing things (spiders) and move quickly on from there. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's kind of nice to have something that doesn't require a lot of thought. I'm also playing 'Zelda: Legend of the Minish Cap" on my Game Boy Advance SP right now, and this game is what I pick up when my day at work has been stressful and I'm not up for a long, involved puzzle-solving stint (I'm a 33 year old single mom who works full time - not a lot of free time). You aren't going to get involved with the characters like you may have with the first Lufia (for the Super Nintendo), or have a huge world to explore like 'Champions of Norrath' for the PS2 or 'Baldur's Gate' for the PC, but you do get to go questing almost immediately, and I've found that it's a pretty easy play, too. I've only died once...and that was because I didn't have the manual with me and didn't know how to access my health potions when I needed them (nothing like getting cornered by a dark sorceror and his goons and fumbling with one's inventory!). I think one of the best aspects of this game is that you can turn it off wherever you are and come back right there. When I save the game and then turn it off, upon powering up the PSP again, I see -exactly- the same scene before me. I don't have to go through a menu to load the game. I don't -think- this is because the game is put on stand-by, because if I'd been doing that I'm sure I'd have run down the battery by now (since I only get to play at night for an hour or so), but I can't say for sure. It does save a heck of a lot of time, though, and lets you maximize those moments waiting for your kids or at the doctor's office. I agree with another post that there will certainly be better RPGs for the PSP someday - but this is certainly something for RPG gamers to buy and play with in the meantime - especially if you're not into all the sports games they seem to have debuted with!

Not a bad launch title!

Untold Legends is an RPG brought to us by Sony Online Entertainment, the same people that gave us Everquest, EQ2, and Star Wars Galaxies. While this game is not anywhere near as in depth as those games, it is a fun, light, roleplaying game, and the only one available at the launch of the PSP. It's really not even in the same vein as the afore-mentioned titles, and really owes a debt to Blizzard's Diablo line of games, as it plays nearly identical. Choose between 4 character classes, various modifications to appearance and skills, and off you go. The game offers quests and spells and dungeons to explore and equipment to loot and buy and sell, as well as providing fairly impressive graphics for a handheld game.

Untold Legends is a perfect RPG for people like me, with a little time to kill on the train ride home, or late at night in bed when you can't fall asleep.

Best PSP action game out

I've had this game for 3 days now and I love it it's just the right amount of depth and it lasts a very long time considering the extremely high amount of quests and if you do get it don't
get stuck in the wrong catacomb off of the start.

Great Little Game- Read on

At first, I couldnt put this game down. at about level 21, (13 hours or so of gameplay) I am now getting a little bored with the storyline. Go find this, go kill this etc. I still enjoy it on lunch breaks from work or car rides etc. It's similar to Diablo or Baldars Gate. It's nothing new, but it is a great RPG for timekill etc. Fun for at least the first 13 hours or so. The game is also somewhat easy.

Diablo II/Baulder's Gate Clone

Do you really like Diablo II or Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance? I mean like as in, its your favorite game, the first thing you put into your system, and you simply can't stop playing it? Then you'd love this game. Otherwise, skip it.

Untold Legends is simply a very standard Diablo II clone that offers absolutely nothing new to the genre. The game starts off with a very plain scrolling text intro, where you discover your character is chosen to protect a newly elected dignitary from harm. Not five minutes into your new position then, big surprise, total chaos insues. So strap on your sword (or other weapon of choice), press the 'X' button a lot, and drink a health potion whenever you don't feel like waiting around to heal.

There's nothing in this game that has not been done better in other games that have come before it. From the vanilla plot, to the standard armor, weapons, item customization, and bad guys. The only instances where the game showed any real glimer of originallity where in a few of the 'boss' fights, where one had to use a bit more intelligence then smashing 'X' as fast as possible. Had this not been a launch title I'd expect it wouldn't have gotten any attention at all.

If you're really into the Dungeon Crawler style of game, my advice is to wait until late summer when the PSP has come into its own with more releases, and pick it up in the bargin bin.

A Good RPG for the Launch of the PSP

Great game, good graphics, and a ton of variety with character types. The sounds effects are amazing along with the engaging music.

If you like Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, or Diablo 2, you'll enjoy this game.

Downside? Load times are bad sometimes . . .1 - 2 mins is a long time but what can you expect from a disk-media type game system.

Regardless, the game is great and it's a must for RPG fans.
