Stunning, stunning stunning

For someone who basically bought an N64 because of the brilliance of Goldeneye 007, I have to say when Perfect Dark came along, and I started playing it - I was even more impressed.

The number of missions, the better AI of the opponents, the numerous number of exciting multiplayer options (including sims), the futuristic "Bond-esque" playability, a diverse new armory of weapons - all make this game an apsolute must for all N64 gamers.

The entertainment doesn't stop there....the game also includes a shooting range (for you to try out new weapons), option to play counter-operative (2 players playing against each other on a mission), or co-operative (visa-versa) - will have you in front of your television set for hours on end.

The only cons are, is that in a multiplayer mode - the game-play can become spasmodic and the graphics can get rather nasty.

Conclusion: I have not played a better 1st-person-shooter game.

One of the best FPS titles to date

While waiting for Perfect Dark Zero to seemingly never come out, it gives me quiet time to reflect on the original Perfect Dark, and my what a game it was. This game took Rave's original groundbreaking FPS Goldeneye (after which videogames were never the same again) and turned out Perfect Dark--not just the best FPS of the year, not just the best game of the year, but one of the best games of any kind ever. It was groundbreaking at the time in its use of audio effects and visual effects. It utilized the N64 with its new expansion pack to maximum efficeincy for both length of game and depth of game levels. The control scheme used still has yet to be improved on, and it is still copied today. While it may look a little dated, it is still one of the most fun games I have ever played, and for what it lacks visually it makes up for in quality.

Then there is the multiplayer combat simulator--which is the real reason that this game still rocks and the impressive part is that no game has yet been able to surpass it. Halo is probably the most advanced FPS to date, yet its mulitplayer does not compare to Perfect Dark's. Unreal Tournament is a videogame franchise that specializes in multiplayer FPS, and it also doesn't come close to the scope and quality of Perfect Dark's mulitplayer. There are three great reasons why Perfect Dark's combat simulator is so good. First, the AI of the computer player opponents is more advanced than any other game (most games' mulitplayers don't even have AI opponents). This is a huge boost in the scope of the mulitplayer as you can suddenly have whole teams of computer simulants either on your team or against you. Second, the mulitplayer is completely customizable in a way that has not been matched since. You can control absolutely every variable in the game. Arenas, opponents, colors, your name, your face, your clothes, pickups, opponent skills, visual ques, player skills, player options, pickup placement, time, scoring, etc. can all be controlled easily. Ultimate power! Third, this multiplayer tracks player's statistics. Everything from rounds fired, favorite weapons, time played, kills, damage taken, distance travelled, rank, medals won, games played, wins, accuracy and more are all recorded permenantly under your player name to keep track of your stats (this way your performance actually means something--unlike almost every other mulitplayer out there). There are plenty more reasons than that, but I would suggest anybody who has an N64 but doesn't have this game to go out and buy a copy right now--it is incredibly cheap for this incredible game.

The Perfect N64 game

Perfect dark has THE BEST multi player mode. This is not just because the graphics rock or the weapons each have a weapon option. It's because of the ability to use simulants. They add an extra spice to this game which gives it almost unlimited replayability. You can actually play a multi player mode where you and your friends are on the SAME TEAM! Sims too easy? Just crank up the difficulty until you don't think that anymore.

You can even play the missions two player! I cannot emphasize what a cool feature this is in this truly great game. If you only buy one more N64 game before you switch to a new system, buy this one.

Rare Scores Again

In the past few months, British company Rare has been working overtime, with DK 64, Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark. Well, if JFG scores 4 stars, and DK scores 5 stars, then I would have to give Perfect Dark 100 stars. In a brilliant follow-up to the wildly popular, intelligent shoot-em up Goldeneye, PD takes first person gaming to another level. The thrilling sci-fi story will suck you in and not let go as the game takes you for wild ride. The graphics are incredible, the sound is awesome, and there is enough challenge to occupy even the best of gamers, while still providing hours of fun for beginners. The music and sound are perfectly suited to the theme, and play control and gameplay are just unbelievable. Not only that, but the multiplayer adds tons of replay value to an already great game. With computer-controlled simulants and tons of options, you and your friends will be entertained for days. Verdict: Go out and buy this game!

I have not been so addicted to a game since 007 and Zelda. This game is almost never ending. I used to dream about all the possibilities that 007 opened up, I waited and waited. Then this game came out and now I know that they (Rare) was listening. Whatever you wished 007 would do, this game does over and over again. I am still not finished with exploring all the options Perfect Dark offers. Don't hesitate to purchase this game. I am positive it will attain Game of the Year status. And don't forget the expansion pak.

The best N64 game, and one of my favorite games!

Perfect Dark is what we could call ''a futuristic and bloody Goldeneye 64 version''. They added all the things Goldeneye 64 needed to be perfect. First, it is possible to play cooperative missions with another player who controls your ally or even the bad guys! Second, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) of the enemies is upgraded and they now have difficulties to walk when you shot them in the leg, of they can lose their guns and surrender if you steal it of if you shoot it. Each weapon has a secondary use, which is a new and surprisingly interesting option. The multiplayer mode gets closer to an Internet multiplayer game with the possibility to play with three friends of yours plus 8 computer simulants. The missions in this game are more interesting, and sometimes you feel like you are the hero of an action film. There are about 40 weapons, 26 missions and the missions have new objectives you couldn't even think of in Goldeneye 64, like wearing a scientist suit to pass a building without being recognized and killed, protecting the President in his airplane Air Force One, or to escape with an alien...there are various levels, plot twists, etc. It's really the best N64 game. And possibly the best first person shooter...AWESOME!

Your probably wondering how a gamer like me has come to play atotaly awsome game like Perfect Dark. Well I haven't. I am asubscriber to Nintendo Power magazine, like some of you guys out there. If your familiar with NP's format on rating games, this one got a whopping 9.6 out of 10! Thats a great score for any game. But the best thing is, it got a 9.8 for satisfaction, that means that you'll be glued to your T.V.(no matter how big or small) for hours at a time. The multiplayer is astounding. You can have up to 8 players (4 humans, 4 computers) at one time, and you know what that means, don't you? A fast paced, edge of your seat, heart pounding, time-of-your life game! Or, if you don't have any friends at the moment to play with, you can play the challenge mode, where you can pitt yourself against 1-4 computer players! Plus you can set the "bots" at different AI levels and personalities! You can have a bot be anywhere from a really stupid player that can't shoot strait, to an incredibly hard player that stalks you and always aims for your head! Some of the personalities are:Revenge(when it gets shot it will stop at nothing to kill the person that shot it), Peace(goes throughout the level collecting all the weapons so that you cant use em'), Cheetah(the fastes AI in the game. Don't even think about out running it.), Justice(goes after whoever has the most kills), Turtle(exact opposite as Cheetah, but has armor on its back), Explosive(gets only explosive weapons), Phsyco(?)(goes only after one person the whole time,I think its the first person it sees...),and many more cool personalities that you'll have to learn to defeat. I have been waiting for this game to come out since 1999. I hope this has been informational to you(now you cant wait for it to come out, huh?). END

Halo....UT2004....They got NOTHING on PD

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 6

Aight...first off, i know that many people will disagree with me when i say that honestly this is the best FPS created to date, better then both halo and halo 2, better then unreal and unreal2004, better then timesplitters 1 and 2: in general better than anything that has come out in the 6-7 years since Perfect Dark came out....

First of all, the graphics are amazing. Goldeneye had graphics when it came out that were too considered "revolutionary", and that included characters with block heads and hands, weapons that could stick through walls....etc.... Given that Perfect Dark is on a system so inferior graphics-wise to the Xbox, the PS2, even the PC, and the graphics are still the best ive seen in a FPS to date. I think PD started as the first FPS to have actual battle physics, including grenades that dont go straight in the direction you throw them, and launchers that require you to actually aim and calculate where to shoot, rather than just shoot when your crosshairs are red. PD also has superb(yes i said superb) graphics for any match including 1-2 Human players and 8 Bots, but adding anymore to that will cause it to get a little choppy. But to have 10 players playing similtaneously on screen without problems? Thats true Gameplay at its best.

The story line of PD is also one of the best ive ever seen, which switches the primary focus of Joanna Dark and the Carrington Institute between many different main objectives, including protecting a computer containing valuable knowledge, a hostage situation at Carrington's Villa, Rescuing an alien ambassador from being cut up, saving the president on Air Force One and after a plane crash, Protecting against terroristic threats at your own home base, and destroying an alien race that was about to destroy the world with a superweapon. The constant switch between mission objectives keeps the player guessing how the storyline goes, and is something that almost all FPS to date are missing, with the small exception of Halo 2.

The weapons are incredible, relating to SOCOM as they have many weapons from many different races, all of which with their own primary and secondary functions. The only problem i have with weapons is the sniper issue, of which PD is not the only FPS to have this problem. The sniper in PD hits like a wet noodle, often taking even 2-3 head shots to kill a person, which is extremely unrealistic, but on the otherhand, PD and Rare did a great job averaging the damage out of the different amounts of weapons.
Overall i believe there is 35 different weapons, which blows every other game out of the water.

The multiplayer experience is what gets me to play it still consistently, even after its been out for about 5-6 yrs. How many other FPS do u know, besides the Timesplitters Series, that you can play against computer simulants? This is the crucial element that keeps Halo and Halo 2 from being perfect games, there are other flaws with the games, but this element is the KEY. Sure, playing against your friends is always a fun experience, and the Human Mind is alot harder to predict than the Computer AI sometimes, but there there are very few people who can get 4 people to play with them everytime they want to play a game. halo is exceptional in multiplayer, but it gets hard at times to play against friends because their not always available.

The customizable options in PD is unheard of to date, as nobody even comes close to it. You can customize team colors, the names of the teams, every weapon and which slot it spawns in, the amount of damage, team point limit, the individual point limit, the time limit, and EVEN THE SONGS THAT PLAY!! how many other games do u know that give u that kinda customization?

The key thing that gets me is the stat-keeping and the AI customization....You can send the computer simulants on your team and give them orders on what to do, from protecting you, to patrol an area, to attack a certain person....its PRICELESS. The stat keeping i amazing, kills, deaths, head shots, ammo used, Damage dealt( in LITERS OF BLODD SPILLED), accuracy, wins, losses, awards, even the distance in Kilometers youve walked. The only thing that gets me is that the distance part is a lil too extreme, ive played since it came out and only have like 3000 km, and u need 9000 to be ranked 1.

Overall.....nothing touches this game.....not even close. If you read any of the replies and reviews, take it from me, this game rocks. I am the Eastern Regional US champion of PD, and am playing in the National tourney in a few months. Ive won over 20000 games, and play almost religiously. This game is completely untouchable, and until they make a game that is maybe like a VR version of PD, there will be no shooter that even comes close to this game....if you dont have it, pick it up NOW, if you dont have 64, go get it just for this game....trust me, its worth it...

This game is the best first person shooter ever made. Everyone with a taste for Perfection should get this game. Anyone who says this isn't the best obviously hasen't played it to it's entirety. When you get this make sure you have the expantion pak so you can enjoy it in all it's glory. This game has it all: An excellent story, great graphics,up to 4 player multiplayer action with up to eight simulants with different choices of AI, preset challenges, tons of cinema scenes, a co-operative mode, a counter-operative mode, excellent voice talents (Carrington sometimes sounds like Sir Sean Connery), Great weapon animation, and an alien named Elvis.

How can you not like this game? Buy it and enjoy it forever. Just remember to get an expantion pak too! For N64 players who want the best welcome to the Dark.
