An insult to fans and gamers alike...

This game seems a shameless attempt to squeeze a few nickels out of what amounts to little more than a recognizable name on a really lame product. First, lets look at the basic structure of the game, which consists of unending waves of zombies that amount to brief pauses amid a very tired and formulaic puzzle after puzzle format. You get sent after one object after another. Each problem requires little thought, but lots of running around as you get sent back and forth across each board. The zombies you fight are more of a nuisance than anything else, unless a big group of them amasses around you, in which case it is virtually impossible not to die. Next, there is the save system, which is set up so that you have to acquire tokens in order to save. Saving becomes a tiresome process, but when you neglect to do it, there is no default point for you to restart, so you end up having to repeat all the annoyingly complex object acquisition that you have already done. What's sad is that the game could have been good. A little more atmosphere, a little less linear development, and a little attention to story would have gone a long way.

True to the trilogy, annoying to the gamer!

I am an extremely huge fan of the Evil Dead trilogy and I couldn't wait for this game to come out. Playing the last games, Evil Dead:Hail to the King, I was very dissapointed and was hoping for something better than the PS1 game. So, I went to Blockbuster, picked up the game, and took it home. As soon as I got home I raced upstairs and started playing it. The introduction to the game was very good and I couldn't wait to start hacking up deadites. Then, when I started killing about 50 deadites in one small area, I started to get very annoyed. Plus, with all the objectives you have which are spread out about the whole town, it gets tideous and very annoying. Your health is very limited and you die when you least expect it. The cool parts of the game though, are the funny one liners which Bruce Campbell does himself and your classic selection of the shovel, shotgun & your chainsaw hand.

If your a huge fan of the Evil Dead trilogy, then go ahead and play this, but I don't buy it, unless you really like it.

Provides way more than [the] price tag!

Ya know how in Resident Evil-esque games you are in a city/town overtaken by zombies, well it's in this game! Ya know how in Resident Evil-esque games you have to find a key to unlock a door and both are usually on opposite ends of the map? Well, it's in this game. Ya know how in Resident Evil-esque games you have to run from the zombies because you just don't have the ammo or health to stand and fight? Not in this game, baby! Plenty of ammo to blast the ugly offa them deadites...and if ya run outta ammo, whomp 'em upside the head with a shovel, or better yet IMPALE 'em with your "handy" chainsaw. Yeah, it ain't pretty...but it's hella fun...and somebody's gotta do it!!! This game basically runs off the State of Emergency engine, you run around completing tasks and progressing in story mode all the while leaving behind a bloody mess.

Graphics = B- (lots of greys and greens, plenty of red but by no means shows off the system's abilities.)

Sound = A+ (chainsaws, gunshots, shovel bonks and plenty of Bruce Campbell ATTITUDE!)

Gameplay = B (a little repetitive, but if you are a fan of Evil Dead or zombie killing it's a fun ride)

Overall = Fans of the movie will eat this up and for [the price] it's decent enough for others to kill a few hours killing a few deadites. I think it's a great tension reliever and adds a new chapter to the mythos. Two thumbs way up!!!

Let me start off with this. Fistful of Boomstick is definitely better than the horrible Hail to the King. It still doesn't stack up to the likes of BloodRayne or Devil May Cry. First off, the graphics aren't terribly great, but decent. CG is pretty good, though and Bruce Campbell( AKA "Ash" ) is the only detailed character on the game. Sound is great with the afforementioned Bruce Campbell lending his voice and his one-liners are hilarious as always, but music is barely adequate. Controls handle pretty well and there's no denying the sweet, sweet pleasure of chainsawing a Deadite and tossing a stick of dynamite in its mouth. Yes, FOB does give you such sequences of fun things like that, but also has parts of boredom as you wander around pretty generic levels( all levels consist of the same town, just different eras ). Now if you're a Evil Dead fan, you'll probably like it. I enjoyed it despite it flaws. But if you're looking for another DMC or BloodRayne, wait for their sequels or in DMC's case, wait for its prequel. I'm giving it a 3 out of 5. This is Sean David siging off.

Until then,
Semper Fi, Carry On.

The game gets a little boring pretty quickly and probably doesn't have great or even good replayability. However for the price its not bad.
Don't be a fool and buy this game solely because its Bruce Campbel and Evil Dead 2-even though I too found it an interesting series to make a video game from.
Shotguns, chainsaws, and shovels are certainly fun to do the good lords work, but after a while you've been there and done that. Rent it first.

Cumbersome Controls and Slightly Weak Gameplay!

I am sorry for being too critical of this game, however this is the best Evil Dead genre video game (which isn't saying much) If it wasn't for Ashe's comic relief, this game would be a torture to play. This game is not easy, and searching around town being attacked every step of the way is just annoying at times. The boss in the museum is difficult but every boss has a weakness that you have to figure out. Only by the time figure it out you're a dead man. That's pretty much the gameplay side of it. I was too annoyed by the time I figured out how to beat the bosses. The replay value has since dropped significantly.

Check this out. I thought this game was more entertaining than ENTER THE MATRIX. I played this game for 2 hours and I was hooked. As far as I know the only flaw so far is that ASH kinda moves slow. I mean they can't add the ability to run faster on this game like STATE OF EMERGENCY. Oh well, VIS Entertainment has given us a great, cheap and fun HACK 'n' SLASH game with puzzle solving, spells and gore. BRUCE CAMPELL does the voice of ASH of course. The story actually is not bad if you're familiar with the EVIL DEAD movies. I can't wait to finish the game and get the whole story in. The story is when ASH gets drunk at a bar, then watches TV and sees a show where some guy is lecturing about the BOOK OF THE NECRONOMICON. Then they play that stupid tape that ressurects the dead and a city is infested with zombies and DEADITES. So ASH to the rescue ;). Anyways, yes it's like STATE OF EMERGENCY except with a plot, and ASH does niffy things with the BOOM-STICK (shoots behind his back and to the side like ARMY OF DARKNESS) and has a desent combat system. HAVE FUN

(1-10)

STORY - 8

GRAPHICS - 8 (the beginning sequence 10!!![.])

SOUND - 9

CONROL - 9

ENTERTAINMENT - 7 (cuz ASH can't run fast)

REPLAY VALUE - MODERATLEY HIGH

OVERALL - 8.4

I've been waiting for this game to come since the first one (well, there was an Evil Dead game before for Commodore64, but that's not a real game. Even though Hail To The King was), that, as you all know, was disappointing. Then I waited for this game reviews to come.. EGM said it was really bad, IGN said it was average... "Heck", I said... I'm gonna buy it anyways!
I'm glad I did, I'm glad I didn't listen to those critics! The game is awesome. I've been a fan of the Evil Dead Trilogy since I was a little kid and this game is what I've wanted... Of course it's not as good as the movies (if only Sam Raimi could be the game director, just like the Wachowsky brothers in Enter The Matrix...), but this is the Ash as you've always wanted. The funny yet tough guy, with all those one-liners! It's all in the game!
The graphics are average, there's nothing to complain about them, but don't expect Final Fantasy X or Silent Hill 3 in here, buddies (even though the animations are unbelievable, so perfect)! The soundtrack is pretty good, classical songs, nothing to complain, even though they're not composed by Joseph LoDuca (the guy who composed the trilogy's soundtracks). Talking about sound, the voice acting is also a great thing... Mainly because Bruce Campbell (Ash in the trilogy) does the voice of Ash in the game, which makes the whole thing much better. The other voices are pretty good, and there are subtitles as they speak. You can control the camera though the analog sticks, so the camera is not a problem in here. There's a big variety of weapons (chainsaw does not need fuel, and that's a great thing). The camera-lock mode on an enemy is awesome too, because you can shoot backwards with your trusty boomstick (among other weapons such as pistols). There's no problem with controls after all, you'll learn them in the first five minutes of gameplay...
So, you see, the game is highly entertaining if you are a fan of the trilogy... If you aren't, it will still be, but not as fun as if you were one, because you can finally control Ash in a very good game. It has six long levels thoughout the town of Dearborn, in Michigan - USA (now only in nowadays, there are also levels in the Civil War and in an Evil Dearborn). You can't forget that, as you finnish these levels, you unlock Arcade Modes, that have different missions, which makes the game challenge much more entertaining. Another thing: there are lots of hidden items throughout the game. Can you find them all? The coolest extra of all is here after you beat the first level. It is a video showing how the game was made, incluiding speeches of Bruce Campbell and the guys who made the game.
The reason I do not give this game 5-stars is because it is not perfect... It's not a masterpiece, though it is a highly-entertaining game that deserves your attention. You could buy it even if it costed 50 bucks! But this game costs 20 bucks! THQ is almost "giving" this game to you, you can't miss this oppotunity! This is one of the best PS2 titles ever!
If you want a game full of blood and gore (no game has more blood and gore than this one, believe me, as an expert gamer), with an amazing character, a great story, among other things... This is the game you've been looking for!
If you want to play a game as Ash, forget about Hail To The King. Just insert Fistful of Boomstick in your PS2 and be ready... because this is the king you've been waiting to hail.

OH YEAH!!!!

Those were the first words that came through my mind after playing this game for the first 5 minutes!Wow!!I've played alot of action games, but this is definatly one of the best if not THE best.Being a huge fan of zombie horror, this game never let's down my expectations! There is blood splatter and flying body parts galore. You really have to play Evil Dead to understand how cool this all is.Let me tell you that from the first time you impale a zombie with your roaring chainsaw, you will be hooked!

Also this is definatly NOT a Resident Evil type game.By that I mean you don't just kill a few zombies and then the area is "safe".No,in Evil Dead the zombies keep coming back and you never know when or where they will pop out!Attacks are not just pre-determined;alot of the times they are sadisticaly random with a vengenance. While this may not appeal to some gamers,I thought it was alot more exciting.Another way to look at your countless legions of enemies,is a never ending supply of health,
magic, and most importantly AMMO!The fact that you get rewarded so to speak for killing the undead is a nice touch.

It's not all just killing and violence,(you can do that after you unlock arcade mode!)there is some puzzle solving but it's never really tedious or boring. It really adds to the story, like finding silver to close the diffrent vortexes or rescuing someone before they become a zombie's lunch. The only thing that I didn't like about this however,is that unlike Silent Hill, there
is no map to check point important areas in the game. This ultimatly leads to running around in circles and wasting ammo on zombies you wouldn't have to fight if you just knew were to go!
I did this many times just trying to find the police station, university, last vortex etc. etc. It's better to save your game after you get familiar with the surroundings.

Voice acting was great with Bruce, and his humor is definatly welcome when you are in the middle of a small zombie army. It's hysterical when you hear Ash messing up a magic incantation...
"nortious alumi.... ah crap!"There is also alot of "duke nukem" material with plenty of strip bars and well endowed women(the redhead talk show host!).Also nothing is funnier than fighting a zombie prostitute wearing garters! On a side note, the graphics are
very good and the frame rate is extremely smooth.

What's best about this game is that you can buy it brand new for a VERY REASONABLE price.I was actually kind of shocked!I can't see why anyone wouldn't like this game.Hopefully in the future there will be some god mode cheat codes available;that would make it even better! Now stop reading this and go butcher some zombies!!
