The Pinnacle of Racing Games

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

When I first purchased my first Playstation2 way back in the day, it came with the GT3 bundle pack. Overall, it's a super incredible game, still to this day. It's not perfect (nothing's perfect), but it's damn close.

The graphics are simply the best of any racing simulation title. The auto selection is beyond anything the gaming world has ever seen. The sounds are bold and in your face, while the music itself is quite ear pleasing (Turbo Lover!). Easily, GT3 is the pinnacle of the racing game realm.

I've been playing this game for three plus years now, and it's still one hell of a game. From the licensing, to the wheel and tune shop, there's no substitute for something as close to being realistic as GT3.

Gran Turismo 4 has been announced to be released sometime later in 2004. Will it be as good or better than GT3? Only time will tell.

Are you nuts?!?

I can't believe there are people complaining about this title. Words cannot describe the beauty of it! It is totally mesmerizing !

Stunning, I repeat, STUNNING graphics ! Stand back 20 feet and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the game replays and real-life footage.

Improved sounds. The first time I got hit by another car, I actually got a fright, it sounded so real.

Fewer cars ? Who cares ? How many people actually drove 50 % of the 500+ cars in GT2? Not me - some of them were just not worth the credits...

I also noticed a definite improvement in the overall racing. In GT2 I often found myself 10 seconds behind the leader after a 1/2 lap, then, for no apparent reason I'd catch up. In GT3, once you're that far behind, it'll take a miracle to catch up. Much more realistic. The racing just seems tougher. It can take some damn hard work to just keep up, nevermind winning. Yes, I could take an NSX and race against little Beetles, but what's the point, right ?

I am soooooo glad I bought this title. Nothing I've seen comes close.

The Straight Facts on Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

First of all, let's dispell a little disinformation and a few bad rumors about GT3. The one thing I want to point out is that the rantings, curses, obscene pejoritives, and just plain mean accusations fired at this game are obligatory and come from people who dislike Sony,or the Playstation 2,or the GT series. If you are one of these individuals, know that you are entitled to your opinions and that you need not read any further. One wayward piece of data I have read is that the game's graphics are blurry. That is plain wrong. The frame rate and flow is smooth and exact and there is almost no recognizable pop-up. But enough with trying to impress you with the fancy technical stuff. I don't really know or care what it means. I do know and care that after playing this game for two weeks it still has me blinking my eyes and shuddering with fear at the unholy beauty of a perfectly rendered Corvette ZO6 tailsliding through a tight mountain race track with tires wailing, smoke pouring from the wheel wells, with the rays of the evening sun glinting off the skin, with the huge V-8 revving to red-line, brake rotors glowing,... well you get my point. If you don't, however, let me be blunt. YOU THINK YOU ARE WATCHING A REAL CAR. Yeah. No exaggeration. Some other complaints pertain to gameplay, physics, soundtrack, and car selection. The gameplay is basically the same as GT and GT2. Some great new little details are the new wheel shop, the need to change oil after a few hundred miles, and lots of others. GT3 basically irons out all the annoying little bugs of the previous two games, and I think that's what people are missing. This is the first GT installment on a brand new system. Yes, the new graphics and faster processing speeds are great, but this is a very solid all-around game. Physics are the best of any game out there. You hear a lot of complaints about the cars being hard to drive, and yeah they probably are if the only car games you are acquainted with are Need for Speed, or Twisted Metal. It takes a little something called practice which eventually leads to skill. Gasp. The "P" word. Next up is the soundtrack, which is very hard to criticize. There are great bands on here, with lots of great, drive-fast songs. If you are choosy, you can even turn off the ones you don't like and re-order the ones you do. Last, and most importantly of all is car selection. This is probably the most controversial subject of the game. Three of the most common arguments are: 1. A Japanese car model bias. 2. Lack of more used cars. 3. Lack of Muscle Cars. Let me start out by saying that the accusation of a Japanese car model bias is preposterous and just plain stupid. This game was not made exclusively in Japan with Japanese people. It took multinational support and leadership to get the game where it is and able to have the cars it has. The last time I checked, the Viper is not produced by the same company as the Supra. But still it is there. A larger reason opposing this view is that the people who make this game are car people. A true automotive enthusiast does not discriminate between car manufacturers or nationalities. A final reason is that Japan just has a lot of great- yeah, I said it, great- cars made by many manufacturers. Now look at the U.S. and say the same thing. Go ahead, list 'em. Corvette,Viper,Camaro,Firebird,Mustang, and a couple of Panoz models. That's it. To say that the game would be better off with a few more used cars is just plain hilarious. Why would you want the programmers and designers of this game wasting their time putting in an '83 Civic when they did spend it on the RX-8 and Z concept. I tell 'ya people. You want a used clunker to tear around in instead of a super car you need to get some therapy. I can hear you Muscle Car guys screaming from here. Calm down, I can relate. I miss them too. But you have to realize there are a growing majority of people out there who would rather rev a four-banger instead of a V-8, so that is where the game went. Look on the bright side though. At least they updated the Camaro SS, ZO6, and Mustang. All said, this is probably the best game out there for the Playstation 2 for a lot of people. You have got to realize that this game is not for everyone. If you would rather blast space aliens, be chased by cops, or play a game with a big mean clown on the case cover you had better reconsider. If not, go on and strap in and always remember to buckle up and use your turn signal.

Reason enough to buy a PS2

The original Gran Turismo was the only racing game I've ever spent more than a couple hours playing. I found it frustrating, and yet, and yet... hours went by as I tried to accumulate enough money for that one more upgrade on the car, to come in first rather than second, or to qualify for that license.

GT3 has all those same qualities, but instead of pushing the limits of a PlayStation, it's pushing forward a PlayStation 2. The game slips over the line from being a game experience to becoming a television experience for me; and, the gameplay is at that same beautiful borderline between frustration and intuition where the original sat.

Whether or not you play racing games, I can't recommend this game enough. If you've been sitting on the fence considering a PS2 purchase, this is the reason.

PS2 Graphics with PS1 tracks and cars

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

Although the graphics are definitely up from yesteryears PS1. There is an obvious resemblance in track design that has only changed by adding the increased graphics, a cheering crowd and the different road handling of the cars.

The tracks are a re-run of GT2. I do understand that the tracks are recreated from actual tracks located around the world but as simple of a statement as that may be I still would of liked to have seen a little variety or a surprise of some sort in the game. A rabbit or a deer on the track to avoid?

On the upside once you make your vehicle choice and have enough money to upgrade you will be happy to know that there is only 1 place to tune-up your car. GT2 players will tell you that it was a hit and miss game finding which manufacture tuned which cars.

I will continue to Play GT3 simply because it is new and I haven't completed every race on the game yet. I may have been a bit critical on my review of the game but I would still recommend it to someone who has not played any of the Grand Turismo games before.

I do not have any regrets in my purchase since Sony is such a strong competitor in the gaming market it is nice to know that a company that large is still concerned with the consumer. The ability to use the controllers from PS1 to PS2 and still being able to play PS1 games on the PS2. That is unheard of and very impressive on Sony's part. So I thank Sony for those of us that do not have much money to spend.

I played this game a few times on a friend's console, and bought the PS2 just for GT3. It's worth it!

This game is pretty much what it says it is. Good game to rent to check out if you like it. Only problem I had was driver licenses were real hard, but hey, what game isn't hard sometimes? It's what makes it a good game.

About Arcade mode

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

Not much has been said about Arcade Mode in the reviews of GT3 and GT4.
I started out in simulation mode and very quickly rediscovered my obsessive/compulsive side--worried about winning races to get more credits to get more and better cars--lots of tension...not exactly my favorite. I'm in my 50s now, and prefer a more zenlike fun in life.
So this brings me to the arcade side. The feeling of racing is pretty much the same as simulation, and a great deal more relaxing, silly fun. If you start out in easy mode, it is not too hard to win races and unlock all the tracks in GT3 in a short time. You also get to try out a lot of different cars without having to win them first. To get all this in simulation mode takes a long time and quite a lot of frustration.
I'm into having fun with video games, and GT3 is fabulous fun. For those who enjoy really getting into the challenge, and working hard to get their fun, simulation mode is fabulously deep...but for those of you who just want to try out a car and a new track and enjoy the fun of driving that you will never get on our congested streets, arcade mode is your answer.
Marvel at the beautiful scenery and laugh at the silly mistakes you make...relax and enjoy the ride!!! Burnout 3 is also fun, but does not have the realistic driving that makes the GT series so great.
To really enjoy the game, get a Driving force EX or Driving Force Pro.
I use a Black and Decker WM225 Workmate with a 3/4"x10"x40" board clamped to it as a stand for the wheel. The pedals conveniently rest against the workmate on the floor and don't slide around. Sitting comfortably in an office chair with my legs stretched out in an ideal position, I can play for hours and not spend $300 on a racing chair. The workmate is very handy around the house or garage as well.
Don't be intimidated by the difficulty of GT3. Get to know the Arcade mode...fun and fairly easy.

You have a ton of cars to choose from which is awesome! But they made it way to difficult to get them. You find yourself just running the same races over and over and over and over for hours just to build your cash up so you can move on. EXTREMELY BORING!
After playing Need For Speed Underground, the action in this game seems so slow like the cars are barelly crawling along.
I also didn't like that in the game you had to do little drivers exam courses to move up to the next class of drivers license. I thought it was pretty lame, boring and a waste of time. They tried to make this game as realistic as possible, which is good to a point, but somewhere along the lines they forgot it was a game.
This game does have one of the best soundtracks out there for a ps2 game.
