Grand Turismo 3 Review (JAP version)

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 16 / 21

This review is being written only one day after purchasing a JAP PS2 plus a copy of the game. I took the machine out of the box, inserted the CD, turned it on and just watched.....and I watched, and I watched. WOW!! - at last a video game that lives up to my expectations. An intro that will leave your jaw on the floor. Until you realise that the intro is actually in game footage. Okay, so I have only played the game for around 5 hours but it is absolutely superb. I'm not going to say anything more as I am off home to play it some more (before I pop to the pub anyway). Buy it as soon as it hits the shelves & enjoy !!

Must have for any car enthusiast

All the people who gave this game less than five stars either do not like realistic racing or they are just feeding you pure B.S. This is the best looking game I have ever seen. The only thing better is real life...it is that good.

Best Racing Game Ever. Bar None

I've played the Japanese version of Gran Turismo 3, and I've never played a racing game that has ever been this good. GT3 easily raises the bar so high, that there is no way that any other company can produce a better racing game than this. (Aside for Gran Turismo 4, but that's another story)

The graphics really show off what the PlayStation 2 is capable of. In the Seattle circuit, you can actually see little heat waves coming off of the pavement. The sun looks so real in this game that I automatically started to squint my eyes while looking into it. The brake discs actually heat up when you brake for a long period of time!! Now that is realism people.

The gameplay is also really realistic. The handling between a Ford Mustang and a Honda S2000 is very different, just like in real life. If you tailgate a driver ahead of you, you can actually use the suction behind his car to sling shot past him. Just like in real life.

Needless to say, if you love cars, then by all means buy this game. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

I love it

This is the absolute best racing game I have ever played, and that includes racing games found in arcades. This is not just a game where you build up from scratch, win some races, and buy faster cars. To do all of this you actually have to choose what cars you buy carefully, win races that will give you enough money to soup-up your cars and customize them, and then, if you wish you can buy fancier cars. You are in complete control. You actually feel pride of ownership! The variety of cars is outstanding, too. In my case, when I started I decided to buy a Chrysler PT Cruiser. Stock it's not that great, but add a lightening kit, a turbo kit, and an enhanced intake/exhaust system and it's rocket city! Oh, and I splurged on some fancy looking wheels, also. They don't enhance performance, but they sure look nice, and it makes the car feel more like "mine"! The multitude of races is also amazing, for example, there's even an "1980's only" race! And WHEN you buy this game, I HEAVILY recommend that you buy the Logitech GT Force steering wheel to go along with it. This is what makes the driving so realistic. This wheel actually feels like a real steering wheel, complete with resistance, and it even jerks when you hit the wall, go over bumps, or when other cars hit you. ...Try it and you'll ditch the normal controller for good, I guarantee it!

GREAT!!!

I don't know why some people are giving this game bad reviews. The reason sony didn't give a new game engine is because the old one was perfect! The cars handle just like in real life and the graphics are tremendous! At first I didn't think the graphics were anything special, but, that's because I was comparing them to movies and not video games. Ignore any of the reviews that give this game for stars or less!

best PS2 racing sim

Im going to go through this by category....

Gameplay: Amazing! the braking, handling, and acceleration of each of the individual cars is so realistic. Although it takes some time to get used to, it is great. Being that it is a racing simulation, you cant go around the track without letting go of the gas like you could in Crazy taxi or other arcade style games. GT3 requires a certain amout of skill, but not to the point where it is impossible to win a race on the "normal" difficulty setting.

Graphics: Best out of any game ive ever seen. The lighting alone is breathtaking. Watching the sunset and seeing the way the reflections of trees differ when the sun is hidden is so real looking. And the cars themselves look real. Someone could easily mistake this game for an actual race being broadcast.

Sound: First of all - great music. Motley Crue, Powerman 5000, Jimi Hendrix, etc... secondly, the effects are amazing. the engines all differ and sound very real. and in my opinion the best display of brilliance in this gameis when you are rally racing, with the in-car veiw...you can hear the wind shift through the speakers as you powerslide. Such detail.

Overall: Best PS2 game out right now. Some people may complain about the relatively low number of cars (approx. 150) compared to past Gran Turismo games. This due to the lengthly process of creating the games cars. In the past the cars could be created very quickly, but in this game, cars took over a week a paice to create due to the 2,000 - 4,000 polygons that make up each cars. but what paople forget is that THERE IS 150 CARS IN THE GAME. thats a lot. so.....BUY IT

when i first saw this game i was in awh. the graphics are dabomb. there is nothing better except for real life. there was a couple of things that i didn't like. you couldn't get a racing modification for the cars. the replays looked a little slow. and not enough cars, but i can understand that because it took them so long for them just to make one car. i haven't bought the gt3 wheel yet but i plan on it. this is the best racing game i have ever played.

This is the best racing game made for any console. The engine didn't have to change. The vastness of the games sells it. All Doom type games have (more or less) the same engine, but the game sells because it improves in gameplay. More guns players and multi play. Gt3 is a prime example of this, only they did change the engine. The reason that the reviews for Gt3 have been outstanding in every mag is because it is amazing, outstanding, and impressive. If you don't like cars don't buy it. If you want a second rate gaming system go and buy Dreamcast. Otherwise snatch up Gt3 A-Spec fast...!

...well worth it!

I enjoyed playing Gran Turismo 1 and 2, and, in their time, was amazed by their graphics and attention to detail, so I am not surprised to be amazed again. I am a car buff, and this game quenches my thirst for speed, you can drive almost any high performane car out there, and quite a few yawn-enducing cars, but you don't have to buy them. One cool thing about it is, during the replay, you can set it so the replay goes to the beat of a certain song on the cd, or to zoom in on any close action, etc! With my little 3000GT, I made a replay worthy to put on the TV as a commercial for that car!

I have only 3 minor gripes with this game. 1: The number of cars you can buy are much less than in GT1 or GT2. In GT2, you go to the Dodge dealer and they had everything from the Neon to the Stratus to the Viper, but here, only 3 differant Vipers. 2: There is no damage to your car. I can understand this however, because Sony had to get permission from these car companies to put their cars in this game, and these companies didn't want their cars to be show in a way other than perfection. 3: The soundtrack is not as enjoyable as the GT2 soundtrack was. Sure, they have some Papa Roach, Powerman 5000 and Methods of Meyham, but no song on this cd really gives me the NEED FOR SPEED.

All in all though, a almost perfect game with awesome graphics and realistic car handling. Like cars? Buy this game!
