Even in the dark, Tomb Raider shines bright

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 7 / 19
Date: January 25, 2003

The next installment of the Tomb Raider series has the whole game being revamped from it's original 1996 appearance to even the 2000 release, Tomb Raider: Chronicles, which seemed to be the worst of all Tomb Raider games, but by no means horrible.

This game is introducing a darker side of Lara, one which is different form the past games, but helps expand and extend Lara's reign as "Video Game Queen" Older players will be brought into a different situation then what they had dealt with in the past five Tomb Raider games.(along with the expansions: TR 1 Gold, TR 2 Gold, and Lost Artifact)

The style of playing has changed from it's old and slightly childish "kill anything that runs in your path and make your way to the end in the only way possible" to a more updated a adult style of playing with many different ways to go, people to talk to, and skill building, to make your character run fast, jump higher, etc.

This game is going to start the path for the next Tomb Raider's to come, and it certainly going to be a blast!

I got this game thinking it was going to be good.WAS I WRONG!! I got less than 5 minutes into the game and it froze! Turned it off and started again got a little further and it froze again. The controls were a pain and you were not able to adjust them. I want to take it back to the store where I got it. I hope I will be able to return it without a problem. Anyone else have these problems? What a piece of JUNK!!

Well I have been a fan of Lara Croft (not the tomb raider series) for a while... This is my first Tomb Raider title that I actually play.

After more than 72 hours of gameplay! all this game has that is worth any positive comment is the story line...

other than that this game is garbage!! I don't know how else to describe it...

The stealth mode is useless! the enemy AI is pathetic!! Contra for NES had better AI than this...

There are countless Bugs in the game! Slowdown! The control setup for Lara is Terrible! (I can't believe anyone would compare her stealth abilities to those of Solid Snake). Metal Gear Solid 1's control was better than this set up! 100 fold!

This game has been in development for 2 generation of titles for PS2. Eidos has no excuse for delivering the fans of this series with such an incompetent effort!

Disappointing

I throughly enjoyed all the previous TR games until Angle of Darkness. The controls are horrible and result in the game being miserable to play. The beautiful worlds that were explored in the previous TR's have been replaced by depressing desolate backdrops. Simply not fun. I never came close to completing the game because of the frustration of the controls. Do not buy.

disappointed

I have played all the tomb raider games be it on the computer or
play station, but Angel of darkness was very disappointing. The
bugs I can handle , but the controls are the worst. They take
the fun out of it.

REALLY BAD BUGS!!

As a huge TR fan I bought this game thinking that it would be one of the best ones out because it was on the new PS2 where it allows for better graphics and more complex actions. However, I start out the game and the controls are all messed up, you can't adjust Lara as easily in the previous games. Then as I start to see the story develop and am beginning to get into the game I discover that I can't continue. So, I go out and get the strategy guide thinking that I may have missed something crucial to continuing on with the game. I read through the part that I had already done and couldn't find anything that I missed ( I am an avid explorer) So, I start the game over, just to make sure. I get to the same spot and well, again I can't continue, even after I followed the guide EXACTLY. OK, so at this point I'm kinda frustrated and so I think maybe there's something wrong with my copy so I go and exchange at a buy back game store for a different copy and I still can't get past the part. I then go online and see if there are any cheat codes to possibly skip past the part, but yet again, they don't work either. I finally return the game to the shop and explain my problem only to find out that they've had two other people bring back the game for that identical problem. I have now written Edidos, the makers of the game, and complained about the game and am waiting for a response. BEWARE when buying this game, it may cause some great frustrations.

This game was still in alpha stage...

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 2

In the game industry, when a game is tested, it goes in two phases: alpha and beta. Alpha stage is the very beginning of testing in which the game is still under development and there are still many things missing, things needed to be added, and numerous bugs still present in the game. Tomb Raider, AOD, was obviously still in alpha stage but was released anyway, probably to synch with the release of the film. Basically, I bought this game because I am a TR fan, (well, at least up to the third release) and I wanted to see TR in full 3D. In this aspect, I was not disapointed. The game is really nice to look at and fun.

What brings this game down are all the bugs in the game. The game crashes and is unstable so you better make sure that you save often. There are many places in the game where the framerate, or motion of the charcters, slows down so much that everything looks one half the speed of normal. In other parts of the game, Laura is constantly passing through solid objects and walls. The cut scenes in the beginning are choppy and sound cuts off abruptly between takes. During loading, sometimes you see artwork in the background and sometimes you don't. All this points to a game that was released too soon before it was completed. The producers of this game seem to have developed the game without understanding the idea of what makes a Tomb Raider game a Tomb Raider game. The game has puzzles and such, just like the original, but the puzzles seem to be placed in the game just for the sake of putting them there for the gamer to have something to do while playing. There is usually no connection between the puzzles and the story line. Just lots of busy work. With all that said, I still will give it a three star rating with a warning...don't pay full retail for it. If you are a TR fan and just want to see the latest generation for a Tomb Raider game, I think it will be worth the price as long as you can get it very cheap. On the positive side, it was fun playing in this new 3D mode with the excellent graphics...most of the time. Do you remember the four sided trees/bushes in the original TR that looked like cardboard cutouts? Believe it or not, you will find them in this game! This is really poor production value. This is a PS2 game, right? How could the producers get so lazy in doing something like this? I don't know about you, but EIDOS better get new producers that understand the game better and have higher standards. If any sequels are done, you won't find people banging EIDOS's door down to buy them if this sort of loose programming and direction is continued. My two cents. Btw, I didn't pay retail.

Stooped much lower than the originals.

Me and my dad have played all the tomb raiders and this one is definitely the worst. First of all, there are many glitches in the game. In one part, a fish is flying above the water. Secondly, lara is very slow and doesn't react fast enough. When you take out your guns, she aims at the enemie. But the engine does it in such a way that it really doesnt fit the game. I give this game a 1 out of 5.

Angel of Darkness is worth the effort...

Overall, I really enjoy the game. I've been playing it since I got it in November, and I haven't gotten bored with it yet. But I usually play the game 8 or 10 hours a week, so I'm only 3/4 of the way through it. The first 3 weeks I started to think buying it was a mistake. The controls are hard to get used to, and are entirely too sensitive. But if you stick it out, get used to them, you'll really enjoy the game.

This game is great! I really enjoy the new graphics. It's taken a little time to get used to the controller functions. Overall, a really fun game.
