I really don't know what to say...

I am a diehard TR fan. I first became addicted to the series like junkies are addicted to cocaine back in 97. I was only five then, but my opinion is still credible, thank you very much! Then I couldn't play well, but enjoyed watching my dad. Since then, beating the games has been like a family tradition. By the time Chronicles arrived, I loved the game so much that I almost didn't want to admit that it slightly disappointed me. But I still held on to hope that the next one would be great... oh boy, what a mistake to make...

After a disastrously long wait (3 years! I almost died, especially since Chronicles had such a low replay value!) I was trembling the day AOD came out. But I immediately saw that this was something to merely look at and put down...

THE GOOD:

1. NICE TOMBS... WHEN YOU FINALLY GOT TO THE TOMBS! Probably the levels I enjoyed the most were Tomb of Ancients & Hall of Seasons. Guys, more tombs! What do you think people expect from TOMB RAIDER? It didn't say WANDERING-AROUND-TALKING-TO-USELESS-EX-JANITORS-AND-PICKING-UP-STUPID-BOXES-THEY-LEFT-BEHIND RAIDER!
2. OKAY STORY- I said `okay'. The story got you interested at first to see more, but the ending? What the BEEP was that? Who the hell is Kurtis, who's Eckhardt really if Karel's the head guy, and why on earth would you play as Kurtis if he was really a bad guy?
3. NICE BEGINNING... FOR THE FIRST 10 MINUTES! I really believe that Tomb Raiders are best in tombs, but I like the occasional variation... I think they got the mix right in TR3, with just enough urban and just enough tombs. When I got into Parisian Ghetto, I thought `Cool!', but running around talking to a bunch of people for the next two hours JUST to be able to move forward was not great.
4. THE MUSIC: I hear they got the London Symphony Orchestra on this one, and the music is great... BUT there is no TR theme! I almost cried! Even the comparatively tragic Chronicles had that.
5. LE SERPENT ROUGE LEVEL: A great amusing level. I think it's the first perk in the game, and totally original.
6. LONGEVITY: unlike the brand new Legend, which is comparatively a better game even though shamefully short, the Angel of Darkness had good length.
7. LOUVRE GALLERIES LEVEL: Another totally original level that exceeded expectations.
8. I'M JUST TOO BIG A FAN: Even though this game disappointed me, I'm just too big a fan of the series to give it any less than 4 stars.

THE BAD:

1. RIDICULOUS CONTROLS! Apart from the new stealth + kicking/punching moves, Lara's running was terrible, her camera was bad, you had to get stupid power-ups by pushing a box... oh, it all exasperates me so!
2. RETARTED KURTIS LEVELS: If you thought Lara's movements were bad, wait till you get to this guy... I'm sorry, remind what he was doing in the game? His levels were ridiculous, in some retarted sanitarium, where a bunch of weird guys in strait jackets are running around.
3. BOAZ: The most painful boss level I think I've ever experienced in a game. Absolutely impossible to beat, what with the ammunition limit...
4. AMMUNITION LIMIT: Where, oh where did they get that idea from? This was by far the dumbest thing in the game.
5. CONVERSATION (especially the painfully enduring one in `Monstrum Crimescene'): what was otherwise one of the better levels (I mean, Monstrum Crimescene) was marred by the mercilessly long conversation with Bouchard. Oh my!

Well, that's all I have to say. I guess maybe I over-dramatized at the start of this... it's not the worst game in the world, but I would really think twice before buying it. only if you're a TR fan like me that would follow Lara to the end of the earth would you find this an okay game.

Could have been great... why the wait?

Like most reviewers here... I have always been a big fan of Tomb Raider. Loved the first game, and still think TR2 is the best one yet. It took two and a half years for this new installment on Tomb Raider, and when I first began to play AOD, I was horrified.

The new controls (analog movement) were incredibly frustrating. There were moments when Lara would slow to half the speed everytime she ran. And the worst part of all... is my game would sometimes freeze for no apparent reason. I was afraid this might be the end of the franchise.

Now... moving forward a few days and I have somewhat gotten used to the controls. The freezes stopped about 30 minutes into the game and the speed issue rarely comes up. I am now enjoying the game the way I expected too. The storyline is pretty cool. Lara looks great and I love the fact that she can now interact with other characters... which can alter your game by the way. The graphics are quite good and the details are amazing. The stealth mode is quite fun and I love to peak around the corners to see who is on the other side.

What I don't understand is why I should have had any glitches what-so-ever since the game was delayed more than 6 months anyway. I don't necessarily like the new analog control system for Lara over the old one, but I have gotten used to it. However, I do like the analog control you have over repositioning the camera. So they kind of even themselves out for me.

My advice... you will probabaly become very irrittated by this game once you start playing it. But have patience... cause if you do... it will pay off in the end. You can tell a lot of work went into this game. It's overall a good addition to the franchise... but not the best. TR1 and TR2 are still my favs.

Stay away from this mess of a game!

I love the TR series, but this game is awful. It would be a fun game if not for all the bugs. It does have better graphics than the others, but that's the only nice thing I can say. It's amazing the number of bugs this game has considering how long the game was delayed. I've played demos with fewer bugs. The game will slow down because it's raining on the screen. It slows down other times for no apparent reason. And the control scheme is arguably the worst I've ever played. You'll get stuck climbing up ladders that you don't want to climb and other won't be able to climb boxes that you need to climb all because of the poor way the control scheme is set up. This game is sad, and the manufacturer should be ashamed that they didn't do any better with the extra time they had to get all the kinks worked out of this game.

Thumbs down

By far, the worst of the TR games. Glitches and bugs are everywhere and even frequent saves won't save you from having to start over. Important pieces of rooms go missing or the screen turns to grey. Sometimes Lara becomes invisible and you should probably turn down the volume on your tv because when her guns get stuck on super rapid fire, the sound is deafening!
I won't bother going into the poor controls. Save your money. Rent this game or borrow a buddy's so you can see for yourself.

ok,after lara was supposedly presumed dead we find out that she has been hiding from the rest of the world and became darker and more mysterious, this game is more life-like ,with murder and betrayal in it,where we get to find out what hapened to her and go on in the adventure at the same time.she doesnt only have mew moves, but the whole control sysem was changed!it isnt just shooting at anything anymore, there is times where you have to sneek and you get a complex hand-to-hand fighting system.this game has been compared to metal gear sold series games, and is more complex and you get to talk to people and change the flow of the story so it depends on what you do.and her skills improve the more you use them, she develops depending on how you use her,so your lara might be better than your friends, interesting, huh?!oh yeah,by the way, there are 2 characters in the game, her and a guy.it depends on the part of the story your in,and each one of them has his own techniques...

Worthless

I have played all of the Tomb Raider series. I consider myself above average with gaming control, and this game has the worst control of any of the Tomb Raider games. Laura is slow and delayed in her movements. The days of fast moving Laura with precision jumps is gone. I assume my dog and I would have an equal chance of playing Laura against an advanced foe. I have decided to make a Frisbe out of my CD so I can at least get some enjoyment from the game. I will never buy another Tomb Raider game without a test drive from the store or a rental. The TR5 engine will have be brought back to save the Tomb Raider series, and it will be difficult to get back the people who have written it off. The only people who will enjoy this game are those who have suffered a stroke and have impared motor skills. What a shame to disgrace the best action adventure game of all time.

Very good--not a 5 because it feels rushed

How long have we waited for the next Tomb Raider? Inevitably, a game with that kind of buildup will seem a bit disappointing. However, In all but one or two categories, this game is excellent, and everything you want in a Tomb Raider. There are some changes, particularly in the controls; if you're an experienced Tomb Raider they will feel funny at first, but you get used to them and you can do everything you used to be able to do with the analog stick.

My impression is that the game was "rushed" out the door, and this is my only negative comment. There are a few more bugs than you'd expect in a first-flight game, though (so far) none too irritating. The graphics are good, but not quite top notch: Lara's character animation is very good, but her placement on the scenery is sometimes imprecise and the scenery itself is not up to the par of current PS2 games. Consider Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, which did far more with the original PS than this one does with the PS2. Also, features are mentioned in the instruction booklet that don't exist in the game, all of which contribute to the feeling that the game was rushed out the door in time for this year's Tomb Raider movie.

Still, high marks for the game, just not quite 5 stars.

What a disappointment!!! Worst Tomb Raider game ever played!

I would think most of the Tomb Raider fans have already bought this game by now. I am very disappointment about this game. I waited a long time for this game. Not to mention I am a tomb raider fan. Who design the controls? It's horrible!! I played MSG2 and Splinter cell, and they are very easy to control and understand. I played two nights and I stopped because I got so sick of the controls. I didn't even get a chance to get into the game because I just didn't want to play anymore. Yes, I am very frustrated because I love Tomb Raider, and they (designer and programer) really screw this game up. So, I suggest all the gamers try this game out meaning rent this game before you buy it!

The Best Tomb Raider Ever

I would have to say that this is the best Tomb Raider game yet! The controls are little different, but you get use to it once you start playing it. The graphics are MUCH better than the previous Tomb Raider games. The cool part of this game is when you talk to a person, you get to choose whether you're nice or mean to the character. I am a Tomb Raider fan but I would have to say this is the best Tomb Raider game ever!

Some unanswered questions that bug me.

All right, let me be clear about this right up front: It's definitely a Tomb Raider game. If you've played, you know what that means, so I won't waste your time. If you haven't played it, you probably wouldn't buy this one, so why waste your time? Moving on...

Grinching (complaints)

What happened to the side-step function? It's a real pain to manuever Lara to where she's supposed to stand, sometimes. Just moving a smidgen to the left or right, or turning a few degrees to be able to grab "X" could have been easily bypassed with the old Side-Step. And I didn't see a good reason for taking it out, so why is it gone? Use the R3 or L3 buttons, after all.

Not really pleased with the lack of an auto-centering camera. The default placement for the camera sitting behind and above Lara's head is useful when you're running in circles, and yet it too seems to have taken this time to go on vacation. That's frustrating.

WHAT is up with switching the controls around? Again, there doesn't seem to be a reason for it except to make veteran players spaz out from time to time. At first, that's infuriating, then annoying, then funny, then back to annoying. And it was unnecessary. His majesty does not approve.

Huzzahs (kudos)

The graphics are great. Things don't turn all blocky when you stand next to them. There are some lighting issues on items you're picking up, but that's not a big deal. And sure, there's some slow-down here and there, but as one reviewer noted, it's Matrix-y. I can live with it, especially since it hasn't done that during a battle that I've seen.

The plot is interesting enough. I like that interaction with the people around you, and the Wing Commander-style options in conversations. That adds a definite element of involvement to the game, and makes a questioning person like me wonder what would happen if I said something different. Enhances replay value, I believe.

Save anywhere. FINALLY! Instead of having to find the Magic Memory Crystal to save your progress, you can just punch a button and move on. That reduces a LOT of the aggravation and repetitiveness of the earlier games. Good move, folks. As well, you can save at up to 8 points in the standard memory slot assigned to the game (on one memory card. It's kinda confusing when I read it, but, well... sorry). Nice touch, and lets you explore alternatives to what you've done without having to play the whole game over again.

More health lying around. More money, too, which is a little weird. If Paris citizens are leaving that much money and ancient dubloons lying on the ground, I'm definitely going to visit. But the extra health is good, since there's a lot of getting hurt in this game. Then again, maybe I'm just not very good at it...

All in all, a solid addition to the Tomb Raider series. It's definitely playable, and fun, but there are enough differences that old timers might not enjoy it. More interactive things heighten the experience a little I think, but there's likely not enough to draw new players. Recommend renting it before you buy it, just to be sure.
