Great game (if you can manage to beat the glitches first).

I was excited to get this game... Until I played it. The game itself is fun, but a lot of the camera angles suck. I'm also COMPLETELY stuck in one part, because a glitch is preventing me from getting what I need. Which means I'm stuck in a club with repetitive techno music I can't shut off unless I decide to completely restart my game. It also has lousy maps. I had to just run around until I started recognizing buildings. Its not too clear on where your supposed to go. Like I said, if you have a LOT of time and patience on your hands to get past the glitches, it's a fun game.

This is a great game. Who says it is rubbish?

Wow! Tomb Raider AOD is one of the best games that i have bought for the PS2. I think that anybody who critisises the controls must be crazy - TRAOD was the first ever PS2 game that i have ever played, and i managed just fine with them.

The graphics are superb, and the sets are really well put together. Lara's movement and the actions she can perform are fantastic: i think that the new steath moves and hand-to-hand combat are great. They add more depth to the game and improve the character interaction with the surroundings.

Anyone who thinks that it is like Resident Evil (yes, i have heard some people say that) are also wrong, because it still has many of the original TR elements in it, but with some new features. They work really well together to make one of the best games that i have played!

The only critisisms that i can find with it is the lack of her house training level, cos i used to enjoy wandering round and having a swim, even with the creepy butler. The only other problem with it is when you are looking around and the camera sort of goes into the back of Lara's head. Eurgh, its horrible and kinda disturbing.

But enough about that, because overall it is a very good and enjoyable game. It's well worth the money!

Very Disappointing!

I was so excited when, for our anniversary, my husband produced as one of my gifts, AOD! I couldn't wait to get started...myself, my husband and my daugher all sat down for a 'Tombie Night' as we we call it. We put on the game, then all looked at one another aghast! Lara was now analogue! Oh, well...maybe the new-look Lara and game controls could be tolerated. But no...Lara was not meant to be analogue, she was not meant to fall every time you try to make her jump, she was not meant to engage in hand-to-hand combat (except in the mini-clips) and she needs to be able to look where you want her to look! What is the point of a TR game where the camera controls you instead of the other way around?

I can deal with a Tomb Raider that doesn't necessarily raid tombs, and I can deal with new-type graphics and storyline, but please, please, please give us the old control that we had before! This game is diabolically hard to play, and so far removed from the traditional TR, that we are left to play One and Two with more enjoyment even though the graphics now seem old-fashioned.

My sister tells me to stick with it as she played right through and managed to get used to the controls (around two thirds of the way through) but I'm not sure I want to.

Very fun game. Fans of the series might be put off a bit by the "real" elements of the game (i.e. fighting humans in a city)rather than fighting monsters in the jungle. But hey, for 5$ brand new, this was an extremely good deal!

C'mon! Give Lara the respect she deserves

I am fed up with all of this criticism on Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Since the first ever Tomb Raider release, back in 1996, I've been a fan of the game, and because of that I ignored some flaws on the Tomb Raider movie. (Should I expect more from the 2nd installment?)
Tomb Raider games always offered loads of fun, killing all sorts of things from plants to T-Rexes, exotic locations and mysterious objects, this game is no different, but the far fetched plots are `almost` gone. I agree whith every single person that this game's controls are difficult, but in no time, you'll be able to do some new acrobacies!
It's been 8 years that Lara Croft has been an icon in the video game era, and it should remain on that spot for a long time. Of course I just hope the next games (Eidos and Core has promissed a trilogy) don't be delayed too much, but oh well, it will be worth the wait.

NOT WORTH the WAIT nor the MONEY!

We, a family of four, are a big fan of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft, but this PS2 game really [stunk]. Throughout the entire game you have to wrestle for poper control of her movements and there's a real lag time for Lara to speed up. We finished the game with big disappointment: too easy, too short, too frustrating. For those who gave 5-STARS, come on, be honest. You gave high ratings because you're a true fan of Lara's body and not the series. How can any game lovers rate this one above 2 STARS is beyond me.

Strayed Way Too Far

Tomb Raider. Oh, what is there to say about Tomb Raider...? Well, let's start from the basics. Tomb Raider is the story about a girl and her guns, and she just so happens to raid tombs. Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3, Revelations, Chronicles, Unfinished Business, 2: Gold, The Lost Artifact, and the first game boy game all seemed to follow that story line. With that, Tomb Raider gained a wide amount of success. A true money maker, Lara Croft was. So, if all of the others were such a success, why did Angel of Darkness go such a stray?

First, let's discuss the attire. In EVERY Tomb Raider video game, we have all witnessed Lara Croft wearing her famous attire: the aqua sleeveless top (that has made a considerable amount of controversy) and brown short shorts. Angel of Darkness does not have that same outfit. It does not show Lara Croft running around in her unexpected clothing. I mean, who would have expected an aqua top? I know what you're thinking: "But she's escaping from the police. She needs to be disguised. Wearing aqua is too noticeable." EXACTLY.

Tomb Raider is about, well, raiding tombs. In tombs, who cares if you're wearing bright clothes or if you're outfit doesn't match? No one, that's who. But suddenly, you're thrown out in the streets, with guards watching your every move. Your thoughts? "Must... wear... CAMO!!!" In a sense, taking away her signature outfit was taking away the whole spirit of the game. Within that aqua top held the fun and high-spirited, unrealistic part of the game, while the brown pants and boots tied you back down to the kick-butt reality that is Tomb Raider. But now you're in black and camo. Where's the release from the world in that? Now it's just G.I. Jane. And sorry Lara, Jane came first, so there goes your individuality right out the door, along with your backpack.

Second, Kurtis was added. What caught my attention was the scene of Kurtis coming up behind Lara and fondling her. I'm not sure what that was about, but one thought crossed my mind: w...t...f?! The creators of Lara Croft made a very plain-Jane profile of Lara Croft: she was brought up to be a British aristocrat from birth, but later in life she got engaged, and on a plane to God-knows-where with her parents, the plane crashed, killing her fiancé, mom, dad, and plane drivers (damn... poor drivers). Lara Croft was made out to be a very dark character, sort of beyond caring for another guy that way for the fear of being hurt. So where the hell does Kurtis come in? All in all, I thought it was very disappointing.

Thrice, Lara kills that one guy, Vernan I believe. Second, she's getting chased after the police for it. Now, seriously, come on, how many people have YOU killed in Tomb Raider 2 alone? 20? 30? 50? 100??? So why is Vernan that important? What about those other guys?

Fourth, there's fighting. The trademark of Tomb Raider is two 9 millimeter pistols in which Lara takes EVERYWHERE. But what's this? Lara can kick her own ass without guns now? Damn, it's the return of Kung Fu chick! There goes the need for infinite ammo on those pistols. But going on, where did this new idea of flying kicks come from?! Where they all just sitting in a corner discussing Angel of Darkness or something:
Guy 1: "Damn it... BloodRayne came out, look at her, red hair, dark lips, and kicking! They're selling more than us!"
guy 2: "Yes, damn it indeed, my jolly good fellow, now we must make Lara's hair more brown and give her dark lips!"
guy 3: "Fighting! LET'S MAKE FIGHTING!!!"
guy 1: "But... Lara doesn't fight."
guy 3: "BUT BLOODRAYNE DOES!!!"
all: "YAY!!!"

Ok, but seriously, it was very Bloodrayne in my eyes. Where did Lara Croft go? It's no longer Lara. Jill Valentine plus Bloodrayne plus Charlie Manson does not equal Lara Croft, it equals the Angel of Darkness.

By itself, The Angel of Darkness would have been an ok game. But I'd recommend the original Tomb Raider over Angel of Darkness any day.

She's back....and possibly better than ever!

Like everyone else, i was having major doubts of *Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness* when it was set back till June of 2003. My first thought was they were trying to make the game better, but from what they described it as in November 2002 and what i have seen playing the game, it's not that much different from what the original release date's copy would've been. However, even if it completely sucked i would've still bought it due to my obsession with the TR series. When i put it in i knew it was going to be excellent, but when i started the game, i realized it had some good qualities and some faults. I'm only going to chronicle what's happened to me up to where i'm currently at in the game (Level 5) and what qualities and faults i've discovered up to then.

The game begins as any Tomb Raider game would, a training level to learn Lara's new moves. Aside from using her new stealth move, the moves are pretty much regular, however, the image of Lara has greatly improved from TR Chronicles. The story begins with a news reporter telling Paris to be on the lookout for Lara, due to her accused murder of Von Croy (remember Last Revelations? you should remember Von Croy then). When you start the game, though, it starts before the opening movie's story, Lara and Von Croy are argueing. Von Croy tells Lara about 5 pieces of artwork he's been seeking and tells her to go to Madame Carviea's (i think that's how you spell her name) apartment, where she'll find his notebook highlighting what she'll need to do. All of a sudden, there are gunshots fired, and Von Croy is dead, Lara runs and narrowly escapes the police, which is what she'll be doing for a long time. In Level 1, you basically climb up ledges and rooftops trying to learn Lara's "new" moves and escape the police.

In Level 2 (Relic Apartment Block), the great challenge of searching an entire apartment block while choking on tear gas comes into play. Not only every second is your oxygen going down, but you'll have to escape the police while collecting all the item's you need to finish the level. (Remember, saving your game and re-loading will reset Lara's oxygen meter.)

Level 3 (Industrial Rooftops), Lara must first make a daring escape from a police helicopter, through the rest of the level you are basically climbing ladders and opening doors, also making a few running jumps. (Now, instead of just pressing the analog control forward and hitting jump, you have to actually hold down the sprinting key while doing so, this was not only annoying, but difficult.)

In Level 4, you are finally to Madame Carviea's apartment. This is a level displaying one of the new aspects of the game, you must actually talk to the charecter's yourself. While still leaving some of the talking to Lara, you get a choice of 2 (sometimes 3) different responses to Carviea's questions. After a nice chat, you must escape the police by seconds while still collecting a nice box of ammo and a diamond ring from the apartment (not counting Von Croy's notebook).

Now is my current position in the game, Level 5. I have not completed it yet so i can't tell you about it but i will tell you that there is another conversation in it.

I am very excited to see what Kurtis Trent's part in the game in like. He is the new charecter but i'm not sure when in the game you begin as Kurtis.

In my experience so far, AOD is not only exciting with new moves and gameplay, but is very improved graphically from the PSOne versions.

There is also (on the main menu) a trailer for the upcoming TR film, *The Cradle Of Light* which will follow-up the first TR film.

Shoulda left her dead.

Clunky, almost impossible controls...camera angles that refuse to correct themselves...did I mention the horrible controls? Try to move in a direction, she turns around! And what is with her constantly drawing her gun when you try to jump onto an object?

Did I mention the user-UNfriendly controls?

One star deserved because they finally got past the lousy polygon graphics and went with smooth texture mapping and some very nice light sourcing. By the way, the light sourcing SLOWS the game down (you'll see that right away on a rainy rooftop).

Oh, and my game went black screen twice, in the first half hour and had to be restarted.

Too bad I waited so long for this. I personally looked forward to a revisit to TR One and Two. Such ground-breaking games. Hope this game gets better or it goes in the shiny frisbee stack.

Pretty good game -- better than most PSX titles.

We all had HUGE expectations for this game - and while this game isn't as polished as Metal Gear Solid, it's pretty good. I've played the game over the last two days - no I'm nowhere near finished btw (and I don't play a lot of games these days, so this is saying something) - It takes a while for the game to really feel like you're experiencing its full range, but once you're a few chapters in, it's more robust, more atmospheric, more fun.
I don't particularly go for the dialogue bits; nor do I care for Lara running errands in the ghettos of Paris -- some of the story elements there are a little "well, whatever", BUT once you're underground, it's much better. I'm surprised to hear so many people whining about the controls - they're a bit like superMario 64 in that you push the stick relative to the *camera* position, and where Lara is in frame. I find it perfectly intuitive. The criticism about this makes me think people beef for the sake of beefing...
