Is This A Joke??

After literally months of waiting, Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness finally hit the shelves today. After such a long delay, it would be fair to say that my expectations were high but not too lofty. I try not to expect a transcendant experience as you are almost always sure to be disappointed. I was patient, as are all Tomb Raider fans, I'm sure, and quietly counted the days to its' release. After several hours of game play, I can safely say that this game is a total catastrophe. From the get go, you can get a feel of the horrid controls and camera movement. Moving Lara around is more of a chore than second nature and the camera angles are just downright annoying. For instance, when you want to make just the tiniest of turns, the slightest nudge of the left thumb pad causes her entire body to move in the opposite direction in a 180 degree turn, rendering it difficult to do the most mundane and trival action. In addition, you end up taking way too much time positioning Lara to do any of her limited actions (when climbing through a window, you have to position her in such a way that the camera doesn't make in the least bit obvious). It simply ends up being irritating just to get Lara to walk in a straight line. Which leads me to the awful camera angles. The camera angles are SO choppy and inexcusable that you most likely will want to quit in the first five minutes. The right thumb pad allows the player to adjust the angle but as you climb, shimmy, swim or jump, the camera will automatically jump to a different angle, rendering your manual movement completely useless. An example would be shimmying along a wall, in which you experience another wall in the foreground. As you manually turn the camera to whatever angle fits you best, the camera system will switch to it's own angle to avoid the wall in the foreground. It's stupid and as a result, it never gives the player a sense of total control. Another glaring negative is the game engine. In a few words; it's awful. In the beginning of the game, Lara climbs a roof which houses a few crows and shacks littered about. As it rains, there is much to see and as a result, the game slows down to a mere crawl. Remember all those old nintendo and playstation games that would freeze when too much was happening at once? Well, it happens here and with a system such as PS2 and a game with such a high standard as Tomb Raider, it is unacceptable at any length. Lastly, the graphics just aren't that hot. They're pretty standard and the cinemas are tired and uninspired. After hearing the developers rave on and on about how the graphics are going to be groundbreaking, you have to wonder if they are still living in 1996.
In the games defense, I had expectations. Probably higher than I realize. But this game is crap, pure and simple. It's shocking to think that, way back in november, they decided they wanted to 'polish' the game and thus begin the months and months of delays. It's even scarier to think how bad it was back in november to warrant such a delay and to deliver this junk after such a long stall. Could it be that they wanted to conincide the games release with the launch of the movie? Me thinks so.
I've only had the game for one day and I'm a little bit heart broken. Hopefully after a few more plays I can be friends with Lara again. But as of now, this game just sucks.

Lots of bugs and they ruin the game.

The game itself is great but the bugs ruin it. This has a story to it and all, but sooner or later you'll run into bugs that either make you fall through a floor or wall. Kurtis Trent is a great playablecharacter but I need halp in some areas. All the bugs have gotten rough and are killing me. Well that's all.

Sorry about the assumption

I am 39 . Ive played everything from pong to the Tomb Raider series. I love video games be it Ps 2 or Pc , what have you. For over 20 years Ive played most every kind of game and I have to put in my two cents where Tomb Raider is concerned because the game has all you could ever want in a video game. I have no doubt if you get this game you will play it for years to come. My children play the older Tomb Raider games and they love it. The older children Play as well but like the newer more graphic enhanced versions of Tomb Raider . How they would love it if I would let them Play some of the smut out there for ps 2. This is where Tomb Raider pays off. It has all the excitment of those Adult games without all the smut. You will play until you win I promise that. I know I am ..You will love the game. have fun

Looks good so far!!!!!!!

Ok I just bought this game and have begun to play it. I will say this...it looks good! I am excited to really get into it and start to play. There are alot of things different...
how you control laura is different. If you are an avid Tomb Raider player this will take some getting used to. I am a little frustrated because I can't seem to make some of the harder diag. jumps. You now use your analog stick to move her around exclusively and the triangle is no longer used for weapons.
R1 for weapons and L1 for walk. Like I said, it seems a bit odd and I think the jump and roll buttons are backwards as well so it will take some time to get her moves down.
I love the new look and even though I haven't gotten very far yet I am having fun. It has all the old elements I love...jumping and hanging on...climbing....rolling....weapons, but it seems like it will be more indepth and way more places to explore!
So for those of you on the fence on buying Tomb Raider, its worth it!

Annoying

The graphics on this game are amazing. So amazing in fact that the PS2 console has trouble handling it. There is so much slow down during some parts that it becomes ridiculous. On top of that Lara moves horribly slow. So slow, I wanted to toss the game out the window.

You know in the previous games, you got some Uzies and a hand gun to start out and you could do some cool flips and shoot the bad guys. That doesnt happen in this game. It's not till I played the game for an hour that I got to shoot someone. In fact it wasnt till the third level that I realized I had a gun.

I am really disappointed with this game. The people at Eidos good have done so much better. Do not buy this game if you wish to keep your sanity.

The Best game on the PS2!

This is by far the best game in the series. Some of the other games from the series were very dull compared to this. I liked how you could make Lara adapt to how you play, by making her stronger, letting her talk to people which altars the way the game finishes. I also liked how the makers of this game did a better job on the graphics. You could tell that they did in fact take their time on this game. I also think it is cool how they let you play as a different character. If you have never played any games in this series, this would definitely be the best one to try out. If you are used to games such as Resident Evil, or Metal Gear Solid, and you like the gameplay, this game is very similar. It is by far an awesome game and I would get it, no questions asked.

It was "Just OK"

Gone are the trademark .45's, those damned flares and the "secrets". This edition lacked many of the nuances that made T.R. special. The Bosses were too easy to kill and the ending was almost indifferent. The bugs were frustrating! Save often! To some it up I would say this game is for T.R. completists only.

The game is great. why is everyone else complaining?

I think the game is awsome. i dont know why everyone else is mad about the controls. if you play games a lot then the controls wouldnt be a problem. and for the camera angles... just move the joystick to get it at a diffrent point!

This game has a great storyline. you get set up for murder of you mentor then you break in to a building go through some awsome traps (moving red alarm triggers and sensitive sound cameras) and then later have to lead yourself through a whole lot of under ground passage ways.

Im a big time Tomb Raider fan and i like every single game they made. But this one i would have to say is one of the coolest games ever made. I give tomb raider AOD a 5 out of 5 because it is really fun. I like games to where you can choose your own ending and guid yourself through the game and Tomb Raider AOD is one of thoughs games

Worst game ever!

I had played and finished every single Tomb Raider game before this one. Loved them. This one, I couldn't go past level 2 I was so annoyed. They changed the whole playing experience, and added delays between parts of the level, meaning you spend half your time waiting...

Just awful!

Maybe it's because this is the first Tomb Raider game I ever played. Maybe it's because I'm not constantly sitting by my PS2, unless I'm combing the Internet for game guides. But I didn't think this game was as horrid as several reviewers have said.

Being an occasional gamer, it took me a while to get used to the controls. I've always been slow to catch on to analog, regardless of what game I'm playing. But once I got used to them, I was an old pro and Lara was moving around without problem. As far as graphics are concerned, I'm not a big stickler for that kind of thing. I like adventure/RPG games. I like the story, which I thought was creative and interesting.

Having never played previous TR games (which I hope to change), I don't know exactly how the story differs, except that it seems, judging by other reviews, that Lara spends more time in the real world instead of spending her entire adventure in a bunch of caves. My opinion is this: How many mummies, scorpions and other jungle creatures can she kill before it gets old? I thought the variation of settings just in this game alone was very cool. It had caves, labs, an insane asylum, cities, churches, sewers, etc. Lots of games that I've played can't boast that kind of diversity in setting.

Overall, I thought this was a fun game to play, and if you're not afraid of change, go ahead and buy it.
