New console, same old Lara

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 2 / 4

Tomb Raider was one of the first games I played on the Playstation 1 back in 1998 (when it was still called merely the Playstation). Back then I was thoroughly impressed with the game's combination of exploration and puzzle solving gameplay. Now the Playstation 2 brings Lara Croft back for a new adventure and the results, to say the least, are disappointing.

Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness' main problem is that it doesn't give you anything new. It's all been done before. Sure there are some stealth moves that are now incorporated into the gameplay. But all of Lara's patented moves are here, but they all seem rather passe' by modern game standards. Lara jumps, flips, and climbs with her usual flair but it's nothing we haven't seen before. The controls are often so sluggish you'd think that Lara was walking in mud when she was performing alot of these moves. It feels as if the game was rushed unessecerily to meet a deadline. The game had been in fact delayed since Febuary of 2003, but it seems that all that extra time in development did not help any.

The graphics are standard "Tomb Raider". Lara still looks like the same old Lara. Which is somewhat of a let down. When you compare Tomb Raider: AOD's graphics to other contemporary PS2 games such as Metal Gear Solid 2, Splinter Cell, SOCOM:US Navy SEALs, and even it's explorer counterpart Indiana Jones, you feel that so much more could have and SHOULD have been done to beef up the graphics of a game like this. At the very least Lara's character model should have been updated to give her a more photo-realistic look. The streets of Paris are rendered nicely but the environment overall looks rather plain and sterile. You don't get any feeling that you're going anywhere special. The action often at times suffers from MASSIVE slow down. Which really hampers gameplay. Running at a steady clip is reduced to a veritable crawl.

I could go on but suffice it to say that this game is a huge letdown on so many levels. The series is now in the midst of changing hands to a new developer, Crystal Dynamics. Here's hoping that they can breathe new life in this ailing franchise.

personaly all my friends and i have this game from the first shipment from eidos when it first came out.And i can't see how people are saying this game has got glitches or bugs in it becaus it doesnt this game is perfect the voice acting specially. And for all u people who dont like Lara because of this game get over it because Tomb Raider V11 is comeing out spring 2005 from eidos and tomb raider's new developer Crystal Dynamics (hopefuly they'll make Lara look real instead of like a cartoon charicter) if ur buying the game buy the guide to because this game is really chalenging and extremely hard for new TR fans.

How did this get past the game testers?

Seriously, trust me when I say that this game is really bad - tons of glitches so far including falling through scenery, opponents who just stand there motionless, etc. and the controls are horrible.....I remember everybody used to complain about the controls on the old Tomb Raider games, but I played it so much they became total second nature too me...the new controls seem so hit and miss and just plain frustrating. It [...] because I was really looking forward to this game, but once again they managed to screw it up.....I seriously wish I could get my money back for this game......Go back and play the first two again instead of this one.......the graphics are good, I'll give it that, but they;ve been working on this game so long they look really dated....

The best by far....

This Tomb Raider has been the best Tomb Raider I have ever played. I have been playing Tomb Raider since the first 1 back in I think 1997, this game is 1 of the best this year so far, and will probably be. The hand-to-hand combat is the best addidition. I like the way you make the game by the conversations and picking what goes on, that is cool. I paid [quite a bit of money] for this game, and I would have paid more if I would have had to.

fun action packed game

how TR controls work

I guess a lot of people are waiting to demo TRAOD before buying. Some of you
are skeptical about all the complaining about the controls. The controls are
broken, and it isn't a simple gripe that R1 or L1 is hard to use. It's a
fundamental problem in controlling lara.

The traditional controls have some notion of direction like left, right,
forward, backward, up, down. Your controller has these directions either as
buttons or using the control stick. But the problem with TRAOD isn't that

the controller has been mapped incorrectly, I actually figured out the
controls immediately.

The problem is the controls are not relative to lara's point of view. If she
is facing down a hallway with an exit to her left and an exit to her right,
then logically moving your controller left will make her go left. Or moving
the controller forward she should walk down the hallway. This is not the
case. It depends on the camera angle you are viewing. If for some reason you
are looking at lara from the side, then all the directional controls are
translated according to this.

If you send lara running down a hallway, and the camera angle changes
(because of a low hanging balcony for example) then laura will suddenly
swerve to the right or left. It is highly annoying and if you play this game
for to long you will not be able to drive a car properly anymore.

This is a bug in my opinon... I flies in the face of any rational way to control an object in 3d
space.

Angel of Darkness - the best TR yet!

I've been a fan of the series since I got the first game for Christmas way back in 96. I love it! I think this is the best game in the series.. and of course, Lara's never looked better. I really enjoy the RP-like elements that they implemented into the game. I also like the strength meter Lara has when hanging onto or shimmying across ledges now. Makes the game much more realistic. I haven't played a game this fun in ages. :)

Terrible

I got this game this weekend and it's terrible. Long and frequent load times, Lara is harder to control in this game than she was in Tomb Raider 2. The graffics show little if any improvement from the last PSX Tomb Raider outing . . . I can't believe I've been waiting this long for this game. You would think with an 8 month delay, Eidos could have gotten it right. Don't waste your money.
