Controls are way off

The graphics are good, the music and sound are decent but the control is just frustrating and annoying.Maybe if Ubisoft didn't rush it and if they actually played it they could of made this perfect. The sword fights are cool through,it's just the sloppy gun play and aim that slows this game down.

too little or too much

This is a fun game but the aim is sensitive. If you put it on medium sens. it is really, really sensitive. If you put it on low it's not at all. Other than that it's a great game.

it wasnt bad

i rented this game at blockbuster and one big problem was the control sensitivity. i would try to aim at a guy and then i would do a 360 degree turn, while the guy was shooting at me. another thing was that the graphics could have been a bit better. other than that, its a great game

guns and ninjas... need I say more?

As the Wii intends, the gameplay of Red Steel is the strongest initial attraction. Its alot of fun pointing at the screen like in 1985 with Duckhunt. Also, the focus time part makes you feel like you did something really awesome. And I think everyone would agree that sword duel is just a great idea for the Wii remote.

The graphics are ok... but in no way rival any 360 or PS3 game... which again, is not the focus of the Wii. I wouldn't be concerned with the graphics...

The plot was really attracted me. Even though your overall mission is to save your fiancee, the plot is slowly revealed as you progress through the game. There are several twists and surprises that really kept my appetite.

My only frustration is the fact that the direction you swing the sword is pretty sensitive and not always what you want...

I do like the trash talk that Japanese thugs yell at you periodically, though.

It's a solid FPS

I like this game, I have more control then in any other FPS I've played on a console. I think everyone just got so hyped about the sword fighting and were let down by it, but there really isn't that much of it in the game, and its more like a mini-game. I like the pacing of it, so far it plays really fast. The levels are about the right size and there is very little time spent between them. I like it, I think it has deserved better reviews as it was one of the first FPS's on the Wii.

Don't bother.

I enjoy Ubi Soft, they are a good company that usually puts out solid releases.

This, horrendous thing actually sounded like it would be a decent game for a minute, but sadly its not anywhere near. To be honest, by the time the Wii came out I didn't even want to get this game, but figured I wanted to test out the First Person Shooter and Swordplay dynamics out to see the systems capability... boy was that a mistake!

I managed to figure out the controls quickly and didn't have all the issues that some other reviewers on here found with the game, i.e. spinning and starring up at the sky, plus the sword fighting is pretty straight forward when you realize just how limited your repertoire of movements are.

But a bad games a bad game pure and simple, and I have to call this one out. I beat the first level, took it out, and shelved it. I don't want to look at it or think about it aside from simply telling people not to get it. If an FPS is your cup of tea, I had a friend who enjoyed Call of Duty on the system... if swordplay is... sorry, theres nothing to replace that, but don't fret... its really stupid.

No blood (though it likes to pretend its violent), bad AI, shoddy character and stage design, bad voice acting, really ugly textures, horrible fighting system, and the makings of a really pointlessly mundane, cliche and tacked on story... don't get me wrong, I've been playing games since Atari and have seen terrible stories.. this one just goes in that bag of crock.

It feels like they finished most of the games basics, figured out it was a terrible piece of crock after they'd spent enough money on development... then realized that the best way to cut their losses would just be to sell this thing at launch, so they tacked on a stupid story and sold it. It's horrible, don't get it, don't bother, just walk away. If you are looking to spend your money on something stupid just to test it out, then forget it, this is not what your looking for, instead of wasting your time and money on this, give some to charity or something...

A fun game, but a little loose.

Red Steel was one of the first games revealed for the Nintendo Wii. With it's promises of realtime fighting, awesome gunplay, and amazing multiplayer, the hype for this game was through the roof.
Unfortunatley, somewhere along the way, a few things got dropped. First, why is it called "Red Steel?" This line doesn't come up in the game, and there isn't any blood in the game.
Perhaps the reason there is no blood is because your sword never actually hits the enemy. At least, this is how it feels. There is an obvious (but workable, and helpful) disjoint between your swinging and the game's swordplay. However, if the game let your Wiimote be your sword (IE realtime fighting), gameplay would probably be rather frustrating. Instead, we are presented with half-baked swordplay that still manages to be fun, if not repetitive.
Gunplay, despit what other reviews have said, is actually really cool. You are presented with a wide variety of weapons to use, most of which can be held "gansta" style. Aiming isn't difficult, and the ability to shoot the guns out of enemies hands is pretty cool.
Multiplayer isn't really up to snuff. The controls seem a lot more twitchy when you only get 1/4 of the screen. It's still playable, and can be fun, but some of the fun comes from the bad controls, and their effect on gameplay.

Overall, this game is an ok launch title. It doesn't really innovate the FPS genre, but it is certainly good proof that the Wii can handle first person shooters. It's also important to remember that this is a launch titles. It's clear the Ubisoft worked hard on this, and it payed off, but perhaps future showings could feel a little more "tight."

Great fun for an awesome new console!!

Yep, the other reviews are correct (or, atleast most of em)! This game is S'WEEET!! Keep in mind, the controls do take some time to get used to! but, once you've got the moves down (which might take about 20-30 minutes), you will find that the movement in this game is very realistic to how these situations might be in real life!
(I say "might" because I've never had to duck-walk beneath a restaurant counter while holding a gun, but if I did find myself in that situation, I bet it would be a lot like this!)

Aside of the controls, there's also a great storyline & general gameplay here! This title will definitely be amongst the best-sellers for this system!
If you like action/adventure/shooter games, you can feel confident in starting your Wii game collection right here!
....oh, and I understand there's also some use of swords coming up in the game, but I haven't yet reached that point! That's something else to look forward to!

Does anybody know how to write good conversation anymore?

Why do game developers spend endless wads of dough on graphics and almost none on decent writing? These games don't have to have the utter blandness of a Jean Claude Van Damme throwaway film. Halo, Half Life, Max Payne, Ratchet and Clank all prove that.

But the writing for this title is dreck. Combine that with endless encounters with dumb people holding guns, and even more dumb people holding katanas (that I don't just blow away with a shotgun?!?) and you have wasted fifty bucks.

The Wiimote is the one saving grace of this game. It's a vastly superior control for first person shooters than the traditional Xbox/PS3 controller. It's the closest thing to mouse-and-keyboard gaming possible.

Buy a Wii first person shooter. Just not this one.

A lot of hype; doesn't deliver

Everyone seemed really excited about this game; supposed to be a great launch title, etc.

Turns out that Red Steel fails to deliver like Dominoes during a hurricane. The graphics are meh (Ubisoft could have done way better), and controls are a bit awkward. This isn't because of the Wii controller itself... having played Zelda and Wii sports, I can say that the controller works very very well. So I am inclined to think that the bulkiness of shooting in Red Steel, and the fact that using your sword is more like clubbing a baby seal then fighting with the grace of a master samurai, has to do with the game design, not any fault of the controller. The storyline isn't that amazing either. Pretty straight-forward neverending quest to save your girlfriend (brownie points if you got the pop culture reference!), shoot a lot of Japanese people in the process. Nothing innovative to see here, move along now.

It could have been a lot better. I'm selling this one back to EBgames and getting Trauma Center instead. Disappointing launch title.
