It met my expectations bang on!

Having aced the SNES Starfox almost 10 years ago, and having missed Starfox 64, I was quite looking forward to this. If you are expecting a fun pick-up-and-go adventure, you've come to the right game. If you are expected a game that will re-define video games forever and perhaps change your life, wait for "Metroid Prime" to come out.

Starfox Adventures plays almost like an action RPG, with full cinematics and lots of dialogue. You assume the role of Fox McCloud, back on active duty, who must save Dinosaur planet from the bloodthirsty General Scales, who is a tyrant in every sense of the word. Along the way, you aquire weapons, magic, and meet a host of interesting characters. The most noticeable change in this Starfox game is that a lot of the gameplay takes place outside the Arwing. You are on the ground doing hand to hand combat with a variety of enemies. The flight missions are still here, but most of the good stuff takes place on the ground.

Enough cannot be said for the graphics, which are amazing in every way. The animation is fluid and colorful, the scenery is rich and well-detailed. It excells equally well in the sound department. For anyone who has played the earlier Starfox games, the controls will be second nature. The ground combat plays a lot like a Zelda game. Starfox Adventures poses a medium challenge to gamers, but is tons of fun.

Along with Super Mario Sunshine, this is another must-have Gamecube title, and one that will hopefully appease those whiny people spouting "There are no good games for the Gamecube". Personally, I love this game. It is not brilliant or genre-defining, but it is definitely worth your while.

I'm afraid I can't give it a full five stars.

There's one reason, and one reason alone, why I can't give this game a full five stars. So let's get that detail out of the way before I discuss the actual title itself.

Although I just recently found out the reasons behind why this game is what it is, I nevertheless can't help feeling disappointed in the fact that we get a mere dinosaur setting for Starfox's first ground-based adventure game. Here was the opportunity to do something truly wild, to go absolutely crazy creating a whole new alien environment, and yet we merely get a "trendy", "this will grab the little kids who are bonkers about Jurassic Park/Land Before Time themes" routine. It felt like sheer marketing decision to combine the two ideas--and it is--back when I first heard about this title, and I still feel the same way. I don't know about you, but I feel like I've had it up to HERE with junk designed to appeal to the dinosaur-loving kiddie crowd since the mid-80s now.

However, on a sci-fi level, the concept *does* still work reasonably in a Star Trek sort of way. You know, the entire look-how-weirdly-backward-and-twisted-this-particular-planet-is idea which plops Captain Kirk and company in the middle of some huge mission which they have to resolve before taking off again. It will be a lot more forgiveable, though, if Nintendo decides to create several of these games which each feature a whole new atmosphere. Whether or not they ever will (especially now that Rare is apparently gone from their consoles for good) remains to be seen.

But all that aside, I still want to assure everybody out there: this is a fun game. It's cool, exciting, has spectacular graphics and hot music which I can't help but hope will be released as a soundtrack CD sometime. Once you get used to the whole thing and no longer feel cheated in terms of concept, Starfox Adventures is one of *THE* titles to own.

I'm positive you know about the game's overall idea, so I'll just describe what I like and don't like.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead.

I love most of it. The animation is fun, gorgeous and appealing with lots of expression, especially with Fox himself. The characters all have believable personality and usually feel real besides the fact that this game teeters on being almost as deliberately absurd as Banjo-Tooie (there's lots of humour here). The puzzles are challenging without being too difficult and the enemies are actually fun to fight sans one exception which I'll go into in a minute.

One of the most hilarious details I love is how the whole "little dino" sidekick bit is approached. This game *knows* that it's a cutesy idea (plus with a heck of a lot of marketing potential in itself), so the game creators here have a blast using Tricky the little dinosaur prince to spoof the whole "I wish this annoying character would go AWAY!" feeling. The idea is to make Tricky appear to be the Scrappy Doo of videogames. And it works, but to an entertaining degree. Instead of the player persistently hating Tricky the way Scrappy Doo is universally hated, they actually enjoy the dino's presence due to the sheer fact that Starfox obviously shares their opinion and gets the audience to actually anticipate what wisecracks will be made in the future regarding the situation. Let me mention my two favourite examples:

After you rescue the little dino and cure his mother the Queen, the following exchange takes place:

QUEEN: My son will stay with you throughout your mission to assist you.
STARFOX: (Looking horrified for a moment) "What??!" (After a shocked pause) "But... but isn't he awfully young? I mean... th-there will be a lot of danger, lotsa bad guys to fight..."
QUEEN: My son is highly knowledgeable of this land and its ways. Plus I'm sure you've noticed his useful sidekick abilibites!
STARFOX (Disappointed, in submission) Oh... uh, yeah... I forgot about those...

Or this scene, just after Starfox is teleported by the WarpStone to the Krazoa Temple:

STARFOX: So THIS is the Krazoa Temple! Tricky... Tricky? (Looking around, noticing the little dinosaur is gone), TRICKY?
THE WARPSTONE'S VOICE: Oh, I forgot to tell you! I can't teleport dinosaurs!
STARFOX: (Getting a huge gleeful smirk on his face, remarking with gloating satisfaction) "That's a SHAME. >;')"
TRICKY'S VOICE: I can still HEAR you, Fox!
STARFOX: (Looking shocked at hearing Tricky's voice, then snaps his fingers with an annoyed "DRAT!" action.)

I was laughing throughout all of these routines, thinking to myself, "My thoughts EXACTLY, Fox!"

Yes, it IS true that this game acts exactly like Zelda, but that's not a bad thing considering how great the control structure of Zelda really was on the N64. It guarantees that the controls are the best they could possibly be, and my camera has never once gotten "stuck" on anything.

Also, you will encounter some genuinely breathtaking environments later on here, almost as if the designers wanted to make up for the lack of a more original planet concept. The whole "Moon Mountain Pass" section is dazzling and deliciously alien, with sights and sounds that fit precisely how I've always imagined a Starfox adventure title to be like. I can't help thinking, "Why couldn't more stuff like this have been used?" When you pause for a moment among those cold blue atmospherics with their weirdly waving glow-pink growths and stare up into the distant moon/planet which keeps swirling behind the atmosphere's mists, it's genuinely awe-inspiring.

Now, there is ONE thing I hate about the game. A certain enemy: a sort of prehistoric bat-like thing that keeps swooping from above out of the air, the little one that cackles like a witch on speed. I hate it. Hate hate hate hate hate it. It's annoying. It's practically unavoidable. It's not difficult, but it's easily the most annoying enemy to ever be programmed into a game since the notorious Black Bat on the old Atari VCS's "Adventure" title! It swoops down at the most inopportune times just to bug you, cackling that obnoxious shaking-clenched-fist-inspiring laugh. It would be a lot bearable had it not sounded so obnoxious!

Despite flaws, this is a great game. I severely doubt you'll regret buying it either for yourself or someone you love.

Great Game!

Being a fan of platform/adventure type games, I immediately picked this game up. I'm a fan of the original Starfox games, and I was a bit dissapointed when I realized that there were only six or seven flight sequences. But even fans of the original will be converted to the new action RPG aspect of the latest installment of the series. Players guide Fox Mcloud through Dinosaur Planet, while slowly learning the planets dark secrets. The gameplay is a mix of Mario and the Legend of Zelda series for the Nintendo 64. The learnig curve is about fifteen minutes and teaches the player new skills as the game progresses. Fans of Mario, Zelda, Starfox, of Luigi's Mansion will love this game, though it is quite easy and should take the average gamer about seven hours to complete. Thanks!. I'm out.

This isn't the best game out there for the Gamecube, but its pretty good. Its got nice graphics, the levels are just hard enough and the hint system works well. It's kind of got a Mario World feel, but I like it better than Mario Sunshine because its got more going on. For one thing, you can buy stuff by collecting these beetle things called scarabs. Also, you are always upgrading your weapon to give you different actions you can perform depending on where you are and what objects you have. It'll keep you occupied for a while.

im not saying that this is a bad game but it surprised me I thought that there would be more flying instead this is sort of like legend of zelda. I like how they tried to take the game in a new direction but it didnt cut it for me I loved star fox 64 in fact it was the first video game I ever played so I hope that star fox comand will have more flying in it than this one. on the plus side this game had a good storyline that made it hard enoughto not beat it in an hour heres how I rate it

gameplay: B+

graphics: A

controls A-

fun A-

overall B As I said there is not enough flying in this game so I dont rate it too high this game can also get frustrating at really hard parts and it can get boring at some points but overall its a good game

MY first encounter with starfox for N64 was awesome, fox
instantly became my favorite NINTENDO character and when I first
heard about this game, I was stunned with awe,Iplayed a demo at
[a local store],I knew I had to purchase STARFOX ADVENTURES:DINOSAUR PLANET; the graphics and gameplay are the highest qualities in the
game, but the raw mixture of staff fighting and martial arts are
what got me bouncing off the wall.
I know I will enjoy this game and you will too.

star fox adventures is the best game !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i recently bought this game and let me tell u that i think its probably 1 of the best games ive ever played, its fun, interesting, and the missions r great, however sometimes it is challenging, but thats also one of the fun parts, the graphics r great foxes expressions really come out with he finds and picks up a useful item in his quest.
Prince Tricky helps out in the game alot, but he is really useful as soon as he earns his flame attack which u can command him to do with the C button,he is pretty much ur sidekick thorugh a lot fo the game, though fox is the realy hero here. Some levels r easier or harder then the others, the getting rid of enemies with the staff is challenging b/c they can defend pretty well and they take awhile to take down.
Now 2 more fo the graphics in detail, these graphics are wonderful and they are incredibly realistice, sometimes Fox really shows when hes tired, when u have less then a have of a heart left and u let go of the controller he will be tired and start breathing hard then u control him like usual, after u find something he will look intrigued and his facial expression will change. His body armor up close is spectactular, the Arwing even rusts!!! as the game goes on, and unless you use it its just stuck in thorntail hollow ( where the peaceful dinos live)and it just rusts and u have to collect fuel cells to ride it and if u dont ull have 2 collect more, the only drawback of this game is.... that when ur in first person visison u cant zoom in or out without buying the zoom cam from the Thorntail store, and the second drawback is also with first person, u cant walk u can only view, thats bad because for somepeople like myself who like first person we cant walk around, but hey its not worth hating it over, overall the game is a 10, go buy this game folks

This is not a Five Star Game!

Please do not listen to the five star reviews of this game. It has all the graphics you'd expect from a AAA Nintendo title and absolutely none of the fun. The levels sereously seem like chores. Artisticly this game is amazing, but the game design is very, very boring. If you are looking for a fun new Nintendo style game I highly recommend you check out truly fun games like Pikmin, Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker, or Mario Sunshine. I'd even choose Luigi's Mansion over this game. It seems like Rare has forgotten how to make fun games. Do yourself a favor and rent this game before you buy it.

Lookin great!

Alright, first things first. Everyone who has complained that it's too much like Zelda can shutup. Namco is making a new Star Fox game for GCN just like the old ones! Don't believe me? Read the news, I can guarantee it! Okay, and another thing. Star Fox Adventures is supposed to be like Zelda. Is that a bad thing? Of course not! Zelda has been and always will be the best game ever. I'm looking forward to SFA in my highest expectations and you all should too.
